Just thought I would post on the install and impressions of the T3/T4 I installed yesterday. I put in the RRE cast T3 manifold, 35mm Tial wastegate, anf T3/T04E turbo. The turbo is T3 side .48 A/R stage 2 wheel TO4E 50 A/R 50 Trim wheel with ball bearing center section. I'm still running stock SMIC, and injectors so really turning it up is not possible.

All initail testing was at the wastegate rated 9PSI. I have since gone up to 14PSI and will go no higher until the rest of the mods are in place. EGT's are fine at this point. Injectors and FMIC are obviously a must as soon as $$$ permits.

How does it boost?

1st too fast to tell. It starts to build boost at the push of the throttle. Starts spooling slaps over to 9PSI.

2ND gear havent really checked.

3RD gear. 9PSI by 3200RPM.

4TH gear. 9PSI by 3000RPM

5TH gear. 9PSI 2800 RPM.

I goofed with a buddy that has a recently installed 20G on his 94AWD. Both cars equally out of tune. .98 on the jumptronix. Him at 17PSI me at 9 PSI. He walked me slowly, much, much slower than expected.

On the stutter box sitting still I see 7PSI on a 4500RPM 2-step. I did one launch off the MSD stutter box at 9PSI and spun the tires pretty well.

I have pictures that will be up soon. Check my website this week for updates. Feel free to ask questions if you like. I know I would have liked to know more before the install. I should be going to the track 3/31 for some 14PSI test runs. I'm not expecting much, but it pulls nice for now. :D

You are gonna have a beast on your hands when you finish the whole set up off. Good luck!

This should be a parts review, there will be plenty of specific questions and interest. Give us some more details and I'll move this thread to parts reviews.
Cost
Install ease/difficulties
Unexpected problems
Customer service from where you got it
Performance (even at your current mod level, but specify that for others)
Anything else you can add...:)

Is your center section water cooled?

TealTalon, are you the same person who posts on TR.com? I used to be 1SlowTurbo, until I got booted or something so it's now 1FastTurbo.

No it isn't water cooled.

Cost....it adds up quick let me tell you.
Manifold, gate, peakhold EGT, misc gaskets piping, donut, O2 bung. All from RRE the best shop out there. :D I have no affiliation with them, but I live in Florida and still order al my parts from them. It takes 6 days to get here, but I still go through them. No non-sense gimme my parts on time. The best.

Turbo was purchased from a friend who got a killer deal on it a while ago. It si actually the drag T3/T4 turbo from dougs dyno power. I took off the big housing that comes on it and put on the .48 exhaust houding to make it spool up nice.

It isn't bolt on. Custom (read crappy) lower intercooler piping. Custom O2 housing, and dumptube. A friend welded it up for cheap so that wasn't bad.

Problems. Helicoil one of the threads in the head for the exhasut studs. Parts guy gives wrong helicoil tap. That stopped us in our tracks, and delayed everything a day. Make lower I/C pipe, Cut stock oil return tube and make up oil return line. Re route water lines since this a non-watercooled turbo. Find 5" inlet K&N to stick on turbo. Thank god for the VPC. I would have never gotten the MAF on there.

It's not as simple as bolting up a 20G/Frank. I am hoping it will work as well as a Frank3, and last a heck of alot longer. More updates after the track. I am at 15PSI now with some tunning. EGT's are looking a bit rich still That's just fine with me for now. ;)

Excuse the beater look of the car. I am working on making it fast, then pretty. The previous owner rode her hard and hung her up wet. :(

That looks sweet, why is it in some pictures the Exhuast mani looks new and in Other it looks rusted? is it because of the flash or something.

that is one big ass filter :)

Well it doesn't take long for the shiny newness of the mani to burnoff. :( Some pics were taken a few days after the install in the dark. So they may look funny.

How do you like that new Blitz BOV. Loud Huh... wait until you start making some higher boost I put one on a friends supra and at 23 psi .....she's a screamers

OK this might sound dumb, but I'm still learning this stuff... On the left of the engine, I see the Blitz BOV... Then to the right the new Garett turbo, but what is that that's attached to the exhaust manifold on the right hand side? The new shiny silver one... Is that the wastegate? I'm still trying to figure out the difference between a blow-off valve and a wastegate... Thanks!

TealTalon

Yes that is the Tial 35mm Wastegate. Wastegates basically dump exhaust around the turbo controlling boost. Blow off valves dump excess boost pressure when the throttle body is closed.

TealTalon dont you think that you should tap the EGT in the first runner, I know they say that the highest numbers are in the second runner. But the reason is because with that exhaust manifold you have the Wastgate in the first runner which probably allows the first runner to flow more and resulting in higher EGT's.

Not a fact but dont you think so?

I know I said I would post results. That hasn't been posible yet. The car has an internal engine noise of some sort causing knock. I am un-sure of the strength and reliability of the cureent bottom end. New 6-bolt long block, with some head porting will be installed in a month or so. 43 knock sum at any given RPM is pretty poor for performance. -5 degrees timing in the top end is not ideal. I've been over everything, trust me that's the problem. :(

Will the t3/4 run decent with an Alamo sidemount intercooler? I have the Alamo, and see the T3/4s for sale at forced performance, but don't want to invest in a front mount right now. It is for mostly street use w/pump gas. Advise!

For the most part T3/T4's are setup for top end flow. Big HP is what they are mostly used for. They can be configured for smaller applications, but a FMIC would be recomended. I am not familiar with the upgraded SMIC though. It may be plenty. Mine is running through the stock sidemount until I have funds for a FMIC. Really it comes down to how the turbo is configured. All T3/T4's are not the same.
