Okay, here goes. My wife calls me the other day and says her transmission is acting weird.

We all know, in girl speak, this can mean ANYTHING.

When she gets home I check it out, sure enough, there's a problem.

I start the car up in first (5 spd) and it won't come out of gear, I have to pull REALLY hard to get it out of gear. It also seems like the clutch is not engaging because if I let off the brake while in 1st with clutch to the floor, it starts to roll as if in gear with the clutch out?

I do the usual checks and quickly find the clutch fluid resovoir is empty as in BONE DRY!

I went and picked up some DOT 3, filled it up and pumped the pedal for a bit to see if that fixed it.

Perfect, works like it should. Next morning, my wife calls me and tell me she is taking the Altima to school because her car won't go into gear again???

When I get home I pump the clutch and try again, works for me, although it does seem rather hard to put in and take out of gear?

I will probably take the car to my long time mechanic today as I don't have the time to check it out. I was just wondering if anyone has ever had a similar problem because this has me bafled.

Also, if it turned out just to be a hose I'd like to know, I have the time to replace a hose, not the master cylinder.

Your gear syncros could possibly be going out. Try taking it down the road and double clutch it (rev while going through neutral into the next gear) if you match the engine spead to the tranny speed it should slide right in, and if it does then your syncros are probably shot.

Do you have any problem putting it into reverse?

Also there are no hoses that go to the transmission, only the clutch line that runs into the slave cylinder.

Well, the more I think about it, the more it seems that I'll be replacing the clutch master and slave cylinder.

It goes into gear fine again for me today. I pump the pedal and then drive off, slam through the gears aggresively and never miss a beat! Smooth as butter.

After it sits for a prolonged amount of time, same thing, won't go into or come out of gear, easy if et all.

I can see all the parts fairly clearly, shouldn't be a big deal, I hope.

Are the master and slave aluminum or steel?

Also, this N/A motor is the 2.0 variant, no?

Hydraulics.

Change gear oil if you need to.

Pull the boot back on the master or slave to determine which one is actually leaking. Neither one is particularly hard to replace, i've done both before. The master cylinder is easier of you have small hands. (i don't)

Does it go into gear fine when the motor is not running? if so, there is probably nothing wrong with the transaxle.
