okay.. taking a friend home from work the other night and these two guys pull up at a light in a 98ish mustang gt. at the green i begin to pull of and i hear this grumbly sound... at that point i remembered i had eaten at work and starting trying to find the source of the sound. then the mustang goes past me, so i stay in first, spool it up, and proceed to pull next to him.. we race up to 80 or 90 or so.. i am supprised how slow this thing was. only raced supercharged 2000 cobra (got spanked) so i guess i have nothing to base it off of. the best part was the next light when he was like "man what the hell did you do to that?" "did you turbo charge it or something" i told him i didnt install one but it came like that if thats what he was implying.. "oh okay.. i was wondering how it was hanging with me... just wish i could have told him i would have blown the hell out of him if it wasnt night time with a passenger (just met him... didnt wanna scare him) and if i didnt have insurance premiums to worry about

This was a recent thread on the Talon Digest and I'd hate to see that amount of BS and trash talking that ended up there trickling into here. That being said, there are too many variables to give an accurate answer to your question: from a roll, from a stop, 100', 1320', good driver, bad driver, etc. With a good amount of assumptions, skilled drivers in both cars, running a 1/4 mile, both running bone stock on premium pump gas, the mustang will win. For the first 1/8 mile it may be a very close race but the top end is curtains for the bone stock DSM.

They make cobras for the 2000 model year. they have 320 hp.. there are 500 Cobra R's made this year too.. look in the DuPont Registry there are about five for sale. They most definatly make cobras in 2000.. I have seen and raced them. on the back cobra is embossed in the bumper and they have the traditional cobra emblem on the side

I know that Ford did not produce 2000 Cobras, or at least not until VERY recently. They didn't produce them initially because the 99's the produced did not put out even close to the claimed HP, so Ford went to the drawing boards to fix the problem and basically spent the year fixing the 99s. Unless they got that done and produced a very limited run (and I have 2 relatives that work in Ford's Mustang plant and they haven't seen any), there are none for 2000. This was even discussed in a magazine a while back, though I am not sure which one.
Any Cobras you saw were 99s. Ford had a large enough back order on their regular Mustangs.. it was about 2 months+ in April/May to special order one.

Thanks 97CustomGS. As a loving owner of a mustang I just felt the need to point that out, now they did make 300 (not 500) Cobra R's. And the rear bumper covers on Cobra's don't say Cobra they say Mustang.

okay i stand corrected.. i meant the new body style. the cobra i saw had cobra embossed in the back. maybe it was custom. i dont know i dont know the guy, but i am just telling you things as i witness them
now they did make 300 (not 500) Cobra R's.
sorry, knew they made a limited run of them.

Not a problem, just like to straighten facts out. I do believe that guy may have had a cobra rear bumper cover because they can be bought (aftermarket) from karkraft.com for fairly cheap (and they way they should be coming from Ford). Sometimes I really hate taking the blower of my 99, torque was awful nice.

I have a 99 GT (when supercharged it ran 12.6's @ 114 w/1.9s 60's - so what I'm a lousy driver) but since have removed and sold it so I don't blow it up auto-x'ing it. I also own a 90 Talon Tsi AWD that I'm prepping for auto-x & some open track.

Dude, I smell some of that too, I would like to get myself a perfect TT Supra, its always good to have a small legged runner (talon) and a long legged runner (supra). It almost seems impossible, gotta actually save to go to college maybe someday.

I've had two instances in which I almost traded in the eclipse. Once was a 94 TT Supra. They wanted 19 grand for it. it had 80k on it. Would have gotten it too but it turned out to be an auto. Then there was this Lotus Esprit Turbo for sale here for 25 grand. That was an 88 with 25k on the speedo. I really wanted that (4.8sec to 60 in the turbo 4 i believe of the top of my head) but I did some research and they aren't reliable to be a daily driver even if you are mechaniclly inclined so I opted to pass

I'm gonna have to qualify this. I've raced and beat a 98 Mustang GT in my old *bone stock* Eclipse GSX. This was a street race from a red light ... I killed him on the launch through the intersection, and stayed ahead of him until ~ 100 mph, when he started pulling away until I shut down at 115 mph. So, in the end his top end did beat me, but this was well past the 1/4 mile point. Both will hit 15.0-15.2's in the 1/4 mile when stock, but the Mustang's have a higher mph. I'd say they're about an even match for a stock DSM.

And if Mitsubishi had any f'ing brains at all we would have a REAL Eclipse with 260 HP or so to stay even with the Mustang instead of falling behind more each year, and finally droping down to the current posermobile they call the "Eclipse GT" damn it!

Best pass to date 12.817 @ 108.42 with a 1.786 60'. Not bad for a 4 door huh?
