I'm proud to stay that after last night, I no longer fear Mustang GTs. I have an almost stock 97 GS-T and am no stranger to laying the smack down on Mustang Coupes, as I know they produce less hp than my car and are probably heavier. I think I read somewhere that the Coupes around 98 and 99 where only making 188 ponies. I also saw on Ford's site that the 2k GTs are producing 260. So from this info, I assumed all Coupes from around 96-2k were around 188 and all GTs from 96-2k were around 260. I guess I was wrong...
On my way to pick up some food last night around 2am, a Mustang GT (later on I found out it was a 96), pulled up behind me quickly, switched lanes, passed me, got over in front of me, and slowed down. When he slowed, I was able to read the GT embossed into his rear. Obviously this guy wanted to go but I wasn't sure. The fact that I got a ticket on this stretch of road not long ago, there was a police station less than a mile away, his car is at atleast 260 compared to my 215 or so, and my already ridiculously high insurance premium where thoughts going thru my head. But then, a traffic light turned red a few blocks ahead of us. I thought what the hell, reached into the back seat for a can of whoop ass, and proceed to switch lanes to pull beside him. I dropped to third and gassed it a bit to let him know I was game, and I also wanted to throw a little blow off in his face. We slowly braked as the red light was approaching. Before we got there, the light turned green. We were rolling at about 25-30. I dropped to 2nd and floored it. He also proceeded to get on it. All the way to redline in 2nd, he didn't pull on me. My front bumper stayed even with his rear right tire, the same spot it was when we both got on it. I shifted to 3rd and started gaining on him, gaining hard. At one point I thought he let up! Redlined at 7000, shifted to 4th, look up...he's a car length behind me.
I'm in the right lane and he's in the left, I see my left turn approaching so I tap the brakes to signal it's over. I expected him to do a fly by but he also slowed and took a left, fish tailed in the corner a bit, and kept on going. I followed behind him but didn't chase. I didn't want to push my luck with the cops anymore. I went fast enough just to keep him in my site. A few blocks down the road, he turned into an apartment complex. I followed him in for a little friendly chat. I rolled down my window and said, "What happened back there on Brant Pike? Did you let up or something? I thought those cars were fast." :) He laughed it off and said he didn't let up. We talked about our cars for a sec. This is when he informed me his car was a 96 GT and it was only producing 215hp. We chatted somemore and them my stomach reminded me of my original mission. So I proceed to White Castle (I know, I know, it's nasty... It was the only think open).
