Does anyone know whether the external mounting points such as the engine mount bolt positions and the bell housing bolt patterns are the same on the 4g64 (2.4) and the 4g54 (2.6) not concerned with anything else.

The 4g54 is also known as the G54B, and are both wideblock motors, both of which came in import pickups and the legendary Mitsubishi Starion. The 4g64 out of any FWD car are the narrow block. The mounts and the tranny bolt pattern are very differant... On the other hand, they did have a 4g64 wideblock (also known as the G64B) and it came in RWD vans and pickups. This is a bolt in block for the starion, drop a DOHC head off of a 4g63T and you're good to go.

The 4G54 in the Magna TR model appears to be a narrow block.
Same as a 7 bolt 4G64. On a 7 bolt FWD 4g64 front and back eng mounts are on the bell housing instead of the block.

Here is an old page I made with my first 4g63 starion swap. It has some info on the bellhousings.
http://www.beatingyou.com/zerog/transmissions.html
This time around I'm using a 4G64 wideblock from a pickup, but I'm using a Mazda B2600 pickup bellhousing (the truck came with the same 2.6L G54B that the Starion and D50 came with.) I bolted this bellhousing to a TurboII RX7 transmission. It has yet to run, but all the clutch parts went together without incident.
Here (http://www.beatingyou.com/zerog/driftCar/images/transmission/4bellhousingComparison.jpg) is the train of thought to get to this:

If the issue isnt totally cleared up, feel free to ask me any questions.

I'm sure i have seen these pictures on DSMtuners. i lost this site when it went down! but good to be back, there is a lot more on here that suits me with building RWD stuff. my old project: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/321988 is being stripped out to make way for a later model dual cab now ( the family one) 4G64/4G63 hybrid hamburger with the lot! Aim 550 whp!, DJpowerHaus you have seemed to have developed your site a fair bit which is great! and i suppose to ask the site moderators for a RWD only site wouldnt be to big an ask!!
Doing mods like a front mount thermostat housing at the moment and getting away from the CAS to give me a lot more firewall room! with the RWD.
Will have a million and one questions very shortly, Good to be back, take care

Lots of updates coming down the pipe. I'm totally revamping the site from the ground up in the next few weeks.
As for relocating the thermostat housing.... you may want to reconsider moving it to the front. Unless you know of the flow properties of the water passages and can disproove me :-). I think that you will loose one of the most impressive parts of the DOHC head, the cooling efficiency.

I have done a bit of research with a genuine rwd type head gasket, the 4g64 block out of a rwd, the genuine Vr4 4g63 block, gaskets and the head differences. there is just the matter of blocking the two steam holes in the 4g63 head and drill two more in the other end of the gasket and head. The outlet sizes will be the same to the thermostat housing. There is a guy over there that came up with the idea but he had just manufactured the outlet and fitted it without any mods to the head or the gasket, he says it running ok but i would guarantee that he will have head gasket probs' because of hot spots in the head due to steam accummulating and air pockets that wont even register on his guage because the temp sensor is in the thermostat. I tried to get the picture of he's waterneck across but could do it! i said he should just fit a cheap mechanical guage to the block off plate to keep an eye on what is going on at the other end of the head! He said he will look into it if he pulls the head off again. I will take pic's of this whole process and redo my site in the near future. take care, Paul
