The other day I was on my way home from work and this red celica pulls up next to me on the highway. Man ever since they came out I've been waiting to race one but never found any one willing. Tonight was my night it had all the required stickers and exhaust. So he starts revving me we're doing like 60-65 so I look over and tell him to wait so I can close my sun roof. Then we are off he had a slight jump on me but I dropped it to 3rd and I was gone switched to fourth and he saw my bumper. I'm thinking man these cars actually are fast and he still has 5th and 6th to go. As we hit 130mph I decide to blink my reverse lights and slow down didn't want to hit the speed limitter at 135. So I figured I won. But no he wants to follow me as I exit to another highway so were off again this time from a rolling of about 30mph I had him again and as I slowed for my exit he flew by flashing his hazards. Too bad for him.
Has anyone else raced these cars and are they that fast stock? Mine is a 97 gs-t stock. He actually hung in thru the whole race not like a stang or honda.

All I have to say is the new Celicas suck. The GT has 140hp, and the GTS has 180 w/6 speed. I test drove a 6 speed GTS, and, let me tell you, it was not fast. I was expecting a lot more. From what I read on www.newcelica.org, (http://www.newcelica.org,) because of the VVTi-L, above 6k rpms, its supposed to kick in like a turbo... I dont think so. They are nothing to worry about.

what i don't understand is that everytime a magazine(including car and driver)tests the celica gts against the 7 year old platform of the acura integra gsr, it looses in every aspect...they are very.....different looking and i think its a look i could like. definite thumbs up on the 6-speed idea.
on a side note, i have whooped 3 gts's with my civic, and it wasn't by a bumper neither :D

I drove one of my friends 2000 Celica GTS. It had a little pep after about 6000rpm, but nothing like the pep from a turbo ;)
So I don't think any turbo DSMers have anything to worry about.

Hey Fellas,
Thought you would like to hear that my roomie has a Celica GT-S. I'm sorry to say, it hauls ass. Not as fast as an eclipse, but it is no slouch by any means. I was running low 15's stock and she was running mid 15's. I saw a guy at the drag unbolt his exhaust and he ran a 15.1. No, 15 secs isn't fast, but we are talking stock here. They are close enough that if you are driving a stock eclipse and grind a gear, you just lost. And in my humble opinion, it handles much better than my eclipse.
Duh, its not gonna feel like a turbo, it's not. Fast non turbo cars don't feel as fast becuase they pull consistently thru the whole rpm range, they don't have to wait for power. It's on tap.
So if you are driving around in a stock eclipse, a Celica WILL give you a run for your money.

You know what's a freakin' fast car for it's engine output and displacement? Acura Integra GS-R.
Damn, a dealer was driving with 3 of us in the car with him, throws it in 3rd on an on-ramp and the thing pulled hard! I was very impressed "1.8L? 4 males in the car...How the hell...". =)
I have absolute respect for Honda's engines. Nevermind the NSX, which can stay with an F355 all the way till maybe 160mph, and it has 90 less horses, and weighs the same. Wow!

Actually fellas I am pretty sure you are confusing the GS-R for the Type R. The 2000 Celica GTS beats the GSR in "ALL" categories. It even beats the Type R in a couple. And just because I know someone is going to argue this with me, here are the stats from car and driver.
HP Integra GSR-->170 Celica GTS-->180 0-60mph Integra GSR-->7.2 Celica GTS-->6.8 1/4 mile Integra GSR-->15.6 Celica GTS-->15.4 Braking 60-0mph Integra GSR-->137ft Celica GTS-->130ft braking 80-0mph Integra GSR-->242 Celica GTS-->212 Skidpad Integra GSR-->0.80 Celica GTS-->0.92 Slalom Integra GSR-->62.0mph Celica GTS-->62.8mph

I have read in several magazines that the GTS should be compared to the Civic Si and not the Type R. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/cwm/crap.gif SCC (i think) modded a new GTS with intake and exhaust and made less than 10hp I believe. The exhaust netted them a big fat 0. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/cwm/erm.gif Someone at the track this weekend had one with exhaust and intake and was running low 15's--enough to woop a 2k eclipse. http://smilecwm.tripod.com/cwm/laugh.gif

I agree with Orange Crush, I saw a comparison test in SCC(I think) about a month or two ago where they compared a Type-R, GTS, Prelude SH and a GSR. The GTS finished second only to the Type-R.

I have raced a GTS when my 97 GST was stock. We were pretty side by side up to 90 mph. Of course, I was shifting a bit gimpy at 6000 instead of 6500 or 7000...or 7800 like he was. GTS stock 0-60 in 6.6 sec. What was cool was when we were racing, I heard his VVTI kick in when we were side by side...it sounded neat. There pretty nice. I test drove one for fun but I wasn't that impressed. Probably because of the 128, 130 lbs of torque. They also weigh about 2500lbs compared to the GST 2900 -3100lb.

I think the 6-speed idea is cool, but it's the only reason that the Celica GTS is as quick as it is. A friend and I test drove one, and they're so quick 0-60 because they're geared so close ... You have to really keep rowin' the shifter in that thing. They suck on top-end because they're geared so close down low. Just shows what a difference gearing can make in accleration times.
And just IMO, those cars are fugly as hell - WTF is up with the rear lights?!
