View Full Version : How fast is your Internet access?

Sometimes we post threads on the board that say "56K beware", but is anyone still running 56K (or less  ) in 2004?! Tell us the scoop. Cable, DSL, high speed at work/school, or stuck with just a slow old phone line? :dunno:

T1s are quick... but not that quick... about 1.5 Mbps (1 500 000bps)... and is not at all like DSL. T1s typically use a fiber connection directly to their provider.
I'm currectly on a 4mbps connection... (I like downloading at nearly 380k/s!)... and I believe an 800kbps upstream connection... but its kind of expensive.
I would love to have a fiber connection, trouble is that not many places can send to you anywhere even close to what you would like.

We had OC3 at school and it was teh shizzle.
I love my cable at home but I'm also pissed at how ridiculously expensive it is.
I'm still on the phone line. What is that, 32k? slower? I dunno. All I know is sometimes I can't get the whole page when I go to view a thread, only the top part shows up. It happens quite a bit. At least I get to see a sponsors banner, with the flashing lights, moving graphics, or swinging gage needle or some other isht that takes up most of the precious bandwidth.

QUOTE]
T-1 is still copper access, at what you stated, 1.544MBPS. T-1 rate only on a peice of fiber is extremely rare, it's a waste of fiber for such a low bit rate, It's usually done in a manufacturing facility with high electromagnetic interference problems. Fiber Access starts at the OC-1 Rate (Optical Carrier -1) of 51.840 MBPS which is used to build the SONET (Synchronous Optical Network) Hierarchy. It then moves up to OC-3, 155 MBPS, OC-12 622 MBPS, OC-48 2.4 GBPS, OC-192 9.6 GBPS. Then there's DWDM where you put 80 Channels of OC-192 on one peice of fiber using different wavelengths of light, whole nother story and bag of worms. You may be confused by the fact that T-1's usually are delivered to a facility via a Sonet Multiplexer on a Fiber Optical Carrier. Not to bust your balls, just some education. I've been doing Telecom for 25 years....The company I work for is the #1 Supplier of xDSL gear to Telco's worldwide....

Roadrunner cable here.. they upgraded all the services here early this year from like 3Mbps down to 5Mbps down. I can dl at a steady 600k or higher most all the time if the other end can serve it to me that fast. They also have an even faster service that a friend of mine has... it's like 8Mbps down, he can dl almost a meg a second with that, and it's only like 69 a month I think. Crazy.

Currently I have 56k which connects at 45.2kbps. :( Since it's not possible to get DSL or cable in my area I'm going to get 2 ISDN lines and a Cisco 804 router with load balancing. That should give me about 256 kbps download and upload speeds. It's not good as DSL but it's better than 56k. :)
I did have direcway, but it sucks. When it rain, you will lose your internet connection. Also its shared, so when alot of people is using the satallite it gets very slow. Sometime it be slower than 56k.

Had 56K on webtv up until 2 mths ago when I got 1.0 HSI. With 56k I couldn't even login to dsmtalk and a few other sites :( and I it was so frustratingly slow I'd actually drive to the library to use their high-speed rather than sit home agonizing over how slow my turtle stuff was.
