I just picked up the new issue of Sport Compact Car, because I saw on the cover the "100 greatest sport compacts of all time" or something to that effect. As any dsm'er at heart would do I flipped straight to the rankings looking in the top ten for a dsm, nope, not a dsm in sight.

In fact the 90-94 Eagle Talon is ranked at number 80, it is referred to as "the other all wheel drive turbo diamond star."

The 90-94 Eclipse gets number 18.

No mention of 2G's, no mention of lasers.

No respect I tell ya, no respect at all.....

That's dumb! Just curious, what was the top 10?

Talonted1
08-25-2004, 08:24 AM
I'm not sure of the top 10, I don't have the magazine with me.

But the top 2.... drum roll please.................

#2 92+ HONDA CIVIC....BLAH, BLAH, BLAH

#1 DSM's brother the EVO VIII. Which I guess is great, but I just wanted more respect for dsm's.

Indeed, Evo's are DSMs younger, more powerful and better in every way brothers. Hey, a Mitsubishi was ranked number. Who cares which side of the engine the timing belt is on. It's a 4G63 AWD.

Talonted1
08-25-2004, 08:35 AM
Very true, that is big props to the 4G63, I wasn't thinking of it in those terms.....

But #80 and #18, that just pisses me off a little. A HONDA CIVIC at #2:rolleyes:

Honda Civic sounds about right. Its an extremly reliable sport compact. I dont think the mag is written towards best cars to mod.

Talonted1
08-25-2004, 09:28 AM
Well I guess I just don't see any "sport" in Honda Civics.

I think it was a good list. Had some cool cars like the Omni GLH-S, 510, old school Corolla...ect. I just think they should have put the talon and eclipse together as 1g DSMs, and then had a 2g DSM place.

Also I think it should be higher on the list cause of the respects people give us on the streets. Everyone knows that you better have some power to play with an AWD DSM from a stop.

Yeah, i found it odd also that the with other cars that were idetical except for the name, they were listed right after eachother. I didn't really agree with the list. Sure, a 92 civic hatch has a ton of pontential and can be made into a very well rounded car, i just think that there are other cars that should have ranked higher.

not to mention that they said that the GVR4 was a "one year" model:rolleyes: i wonder if they just slapped a list together??

but props to the evo (4G63)... its good to see:)

lol my buddy has a datsun 510. what ranking did it get?

the thing really gets some for a natural 4 banger with over 250k on it.

it overheated and now the freeze plug is leaking.

what number was it on the list?

and a fucking honda at #2 is a joke. its not a "sport" anything. its an economy car!

You friends 510 was an economy car too ;)
The 510 was #9, above the DSMs, RX7s, SRT-4, R34 skyline, S2000...ect..

After looking at this list again its pretty retarded. They have the 92-95 civic si as #72 and the 92-95 civic as #2. Also the Omni GLH as #74 and right next to it a #73 is the Omni GLH-S.

The list does have some cool cars but a Chevy Vega ? WTF were they thinking here on some of these.

When you talk about the greatest 100 spo-com cars of all time, never will a Chevy Vega or 71 Ford Escort Mexico get mentioned.

i did not see a dodge colt turbo ( did i miss it ? ) or for that matter a regular colt which with a swap would put civics with swaps where they belong :)

the omni glh-s is better than the glh, hence its higher ranking.

But their is no reason for putting both in there...Same as the 92-95 civic and 92-95 civic si.

weight... the Si is heavier by a few hundred pounds(slightly lighter than a loaded civic 4 door).

I think the list is pretty interesting, and I think it's funny how many people on the internet are pissed off at the civic being number 2. it makes sense to me(I am not biased because I own a 92-95 civic), but lets face it back when import racing starting getting big the civic was there, the huge rice stage, the civic was(is) still there, and now the silly jdm trend, the civic is still there. also, imagine 92-95 civic in the mag is thorwing together all types.. hatches(except Si), coupes, and sedans. personally I think the Integra should have placed higher than the civic and DSM's closer to the top... the lsit seems kind of thrown together with little thought, jsut look at it as someone's opinion(which it is). ;)

but you should how pissed off the old school Z guys are about placing 14th, apparently losing to a bunch of 4 cylidners didn't sit well with them. :P

yes there is, they're 2 different cars.

the glh-s is a shelby car, the glh is dodge...its the same, but not the same.

You have to remember that the list takes into account how influential the car has been on the scene. It is hard to argue that the civic hasn't been one of the most influential cars to the import/sport compact scene.

^makes a damn good point.

you can do just about anything to a civic now-a-days, i mean hell, people have crammed the evo drivetrain into one.

What about a 4-banger that's been putting V8's to shame since '89? :dunno: The EVO 8 (at least in the U.S.) is still a newbie. I mean when you rank a Civic over an R34, the world is coming to an end. Some of those cars are not "compacts" a all. If you have a Supra or Skyline in there, why not a C5?

WTF with the Talon/Eclipse crap? We all know that Talons are faster. Hmmm...I wonder what Shepherd drives.. Swytzers old car or even Buschurs DSM? J/K :P :P

They didn't even have the Pulsar GTi-R on there. Bastards!

Not sure where the sport in a 1.6L N/A engine is...the car is and is marketed as a fuel efficient daily driver. Oh well, gotta appease the Honda fanboys.

That is not the point at all. This is not a listing of sports cars but a listing of cars that are important to the development of the scene as we know it. You guys love to hate Hondas so much that you are overlooking what the article is about.

karbon

I thought it was the top 100 greatest sport compacts...huh.
Anyway, I understand what you mean, and I totally agree on that basis. If only because it drove the price of park bench spoilers on ebay down quite a bit in the last 5 years.

actually his new front end looks an awful lot like a 98 eclipse. my guess is that he's using the same body guy that brent rau uses to save some cash instead of being the only guy running a one piece talon front end. i also think i remember reading something about the new front end for this year to improve aerodynamics in modified magazine's class review section that included dave.

im kinda confused. the CRX was given no mention. cheap autox car thats in classes it shouldnt be in with the SCCA because its probably the best handling car you can get cheaply. this list is fubar. once again proving that SCC knows dick about performance cars.

no im not calling MY CRX a performance car, but if i had time and money it could be a wicked autox car. now its slow as piss, but still keeps up with my buddys WRX and SER SpecV in corners.

I'm a little jealous... I am fond of the early talons;)

#80, come on, 62 spots lower in the list than the eclipse. They are all dsm's and powered by 4G63's, but :(

I'll get over it, eventually :D
