Like going 165,000 Miles without anything but oil changes and a routine Cam belt replacement?

What kind of problems have you heard about with the 4G63?
Crankwalk? Happens to less than %5 of 7bolts.
Idle Surge? Happens to people that dont keep their tb clean or keep their biss, tps, throttle cable adjusted.
ICS? I have theory that they go out because of having improperly adjusted biss making it work too hard. But that one Ill give to ya.
Transmission? Go to a wrx board and see who has real problems.
Lifters? Yeah, they cost about $150 for 16 of the newest versions that dont have problems
Timing belt? Its just rubber. If properly installed it will last 60k miles. Whats wrong with that?
7 bolts are weak? Mine holds 23-25psi daily. Stock internals (exept cams).
Did I miss something?

LMFAO!
You do realize that the 4G64 has a ton of similarities to the 63. It even uses the same rods. Which you should be thankful for. You can even swap a 4G63 head right over and basically have that engine plus 350cc of displacement.
Pistons are a must for F/I but other than that you can push them. 4G63's are only as "unreliable" as the tard behind the boost knob. Basically it all comes down to proper care, and YOUR driving.
~My galant has a 4G64 in it I CAN'T kill. I drive that car like I stole it every day. Been burning oil for a year... I buried the speedo on the E way and found out it only had a dixie cup worth of oil in it the next day. Now that I have most of my new engine together I'm even meaner to it. (Not something you should do if you don't PLAN on replacing the engine.)
But I'm guessing you get the idea.~
4G64, reliable. yes. Good at making gobs of power... *cough* no. Not without basically turning it into a 63. Or get yourself a pen and listen to EVERYTHING LSRMike says. :D

i did'nt like the attitude I got, i know cars , ive been around them my entire life, my father and grandfather are/ were mechanics ive been changing oil and doing breaks sence i was 8. the first car i drove was a 69 mustang. I took my road test in a 5spd. DSM' s are a new thing to me , but i know imports.

Ok No attitude. Just suprised about "problems" with 4G64's. I just re-built my 165K 4G64 for Land Speed Racing. The truck's former life was a delivery truck for my wife's business. we had 5 different teenagers driving it over the years. and all it needed was oil and regular maintenance. I know they drove the heckout of it! I did too. I think, (as stated above) most people cause thier own problems tweaking on them. When i disassembled the motor I was suprised how good of shape it was in. the Crank only needed polishing. The machine shop who does a lot of Mitsubishi work told me the cranks are pretty much bullet proof. The pistons had some scuffing on the sides, and the bearings were still in really good shape. I put a lot into upgrades because I'm after a record this year, but last year I ran a full season on the 165K stock motor. That included Bonneville on the short course where I had over 10 runs at full throttle for 3 miles at a time over 100Mph. Never a hiccup. Bottom line, (IHMO) the 4G64 is a great motor, long lasting and minimal maintenance.

I certainly wasn't calling you stupid. And being a girl has nothing to do with anything. My lovely girlfriend :P works on my car as much as I do. She does excellent body work actually. With no real experience/training. She just has the touch. Not to mention she knows her shit. People think they can talk BS about how fast/what they have done in front of her and she's quick to dismiss the "imagined" details. The only reason I said go to LSRMike school is he's got the normally aspirated 64' thing down pretty good considering he's running an all motor top speed class. Not to mention rebuild experience. So if you weren't going turbo, someone that has experience in your area might prove to be useful. Plus he's gives quick factual info based on his experience. And has lots of pretty pictures if you're still scratching your head. :D
And if you decided to go with a turbo, I'd be more than happy to fill in any missing details you might have. Since, my goal is basically the 2.4 w/ a turbo 4G63 head on it. (DOHC) Then a turbo.
I have a tendency to use a lil' humor at times... not intending to do anything but make ya giggle. Promise. ;)

Have any of you Turbo'd your 4g64?? B/c im planning on having it done by next summer. A little nervous b/c I've seen that it is'nt have as common as say putting a turbo in a civic. i know people who know DSM's like the back of their hand but are unfamiliar with the turboing of the 4g64. If you have ne hints let me know. But those who have some idea keep telling me how sick a 4g64 with a turbo would be.

UH huh... cause it is! :D
A few neat points of interest.
ONE, your intake/exhaust manifolds use the same bolt pattern as a 4G63. Allowing you to simply bolt on stock mitsubishi 1g 2g turbo parts quite easily. This keeps expenses down. No custom shit. :D You can also use the 450cc turbo injectors! (don't forget the resistor pack tho)
TWO, Depending upon your compression ratio and the quality of gas in your area you can probably run 8-10psi on the stock internals. With some other GOOD supporting parts this could easily put you over 250hp.
THREE, turbo a 105 hp civic and its still slow. Turbo a 141 hp 2.4L, and not only will you hit full boost almost instantly, but you'll have better power making potential. Plus it will have GOOD torque! The rods in your engine are alot stronger than a civic, which will keep you running.
FOUR, your pistons are going to be your weakest link. That's what's gonna break first. If you change those out... look out! Then that boost has a much higher limit!
FIVE, after all that your next biggest limiting factor will of course be your head. Switching over to a DOHC turbo head off a 4G63 requires little but common sense and home work. And will breathe alot better than that SOHC...
Galantspeed has many turbo'd 64's, since that's our main engine. The sticky's for the spyders here in this forum are VERY imformative. I recommend a full read thru of all of it. Even the brake conversions, head swaps... all of it. It will help you get a full scope of what's possible, what you wanna do, and what you think you can actually take on by yourself.
My recommendation for you is start with a basic fix up. Anything old or crappy fix, replace. Then accumulate your turbo project's parts over time. If you don't rush you'll find better stuff and deals. Then next summer you could install all of it. Just my thoughts.

yeah i had plans to replace....timing belt...water pump etc... before the turbo. But here is My big worry.... Is turboing going to cause my car to throw codes when it comes to meeting ODB-II emissions??
Asmodeus
05-16-2005, 05:59 PM
LOL! I don't believe so. If you retain your emissions equipment in a spyder it shouldn't pop codes. That doesn't mean when you tune for boost you won't run richer than you do...(And fail) but a S-AFC can lean out fuel mixture. A problem you could correct momentarily while your on the skids with a probe in your ass. :D
Since you would need a S-AFC anyway...
That doesn't mean on visual inspection they're not going to go, "Uh, hey, you have a TURBO... your car doesn't have a turbo stock... your VIN says you don't... wtf lil' lady?" But some spyders are turbo, and you might be able to talk your way out of it. "uh, I replaced the motor when it blew, I bought it this way..." Depends on the nazi behind the clipboard.
You do realize that pesky bulb comes out with a lil' twist... ;)
Some things to ponder.
So stop worrying... lol! Stereotypes about girls and cars might actually help you in these situations... a lil' girl with an dumbfounded look on her face goes alot farther than my smug male one. :P

Yes, I'm sure they can be quite an "ass-et". :P
It sucks dodging emissions nonsense, and cops and what not has made tuning cars such a circus. Its bad enough you gotta be an engineer, a machinist, mechanic, and a painter... Just to get anywhere without spending fortunes. Now its a lawyer too.
When they stop passing me, I'll just stop getting it inspected. Fuck'em. I drove it for 2 years w/o one anyway. :D
LOL! You should have seen the cops face that finally pulled me over. (He got me after I parked at my house... I kinda evaded him in traffic... ;) ) Then his face when I got out, locked the door, walked right past him and told him he could leave it on the windshield, and suck a dick. :D
~I got it inspected in 3 days so the judge overturned his ticket. LMFAO~
:P
Its all a big game.
