New guy here. My '94 1.8 Eclipse has a 5 speed stick and grinds shifting into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. I can't shift smoothly. If I try to shift like I would my Saturn SC2 (that's actually my fast car :D ), it'll grind. I have to let the RPM drop to near idle before it'll go into gear. The same thing happens when downshifting. Oddly, 4th and 5th are no problem. However, it get irratating having to baby it into gear.

I got the car a month ago and I was told the clutch was done just a few months prior. I'm hoping it's just that the clutch needs to be adjusted and not the synchros going out. BTW, I'm running Mobil 1 synthetic 75w-90 gear oil.

Try adjusting your clutch some, I know that helped mine go into gear and shift much smoother with no grinds.

Bled the clutch? Checked for leaks on the master and slave cyls? Try those first if you havent done them, they are cheap and the first logical step in diagnosis.

If your clutch disengages right off the floor, I'd definately try adjusting the clutch. Also try a different gear oil, 75-90 is kinda thick. Some DSM friendly lubes are Redline MTL, BG syncroshift, Pennzoil syncromesh.

If your clutch feels fine, then it's most likely your synchronizers.

hmmmm, my car is experiencing the same problems, so i'll try adjusting the clutch. but if that doesn't work, how much would it cost to fix the syncro's?

The typical tranny rebuild cost about $800, give or take, depending on parts. see shepracing.com TeamRip.com BMtranny.com for details.

Fluid cylinder was full. Bled the clutch, no help there. Adjusted the clutch pedal both ways, no change. Now, I'm really hoping it's not the synchros. I don't know if I mentioned it already but it started grinding worse AFTER I put in the Mobil1 75w-90 gear oil. It always was touchy going into 3rd but I had little problem with 1st and 2nd. Should I try putting in a different lube? If so, what do you all recommend?

Try a different lube then. 75/90 is kinda thick. DSM's prefer Redline MTL, BG Syncroshift, Pennzoil syncromesh.

It could be your synchros, but i would try adjusting first!!! also check to you see how far you slave cylinder is pushing out. It could help if you get a extended rod. It worked for my cuz. But if its not doing it in all five gears than it mite not be the problem just check the easy stuff first.

I changed the gear lube. I put in Pennzoil Syncromesh manual transmission fluid. The difference: much better! It goes into gear without hesitation except for 3rd. It'll grind some going into that gear. It did that before the first lube change. I think it's a worn synchro. I can live with that.
