Try to get under the car and see if you can hear exactly where its coming from. Bell housing might just be a clutch issue, further back might be a bearing, or chipped gear.

I had the same thing happen to my tranny. The sound was the main shaft bearing. One of the rollers poped out and now I have to replace 2nd and 4th gear sets. It really sucks because its gonna cost a lot just to get my car back on the road. I was just about to replace the clutch when i noticed the sound. I have my trans apart and it looks like my syncros are all in good shape but I am going to need 5th gear needle bearing(broke in half), along with the gears and main shaft bearing. I don't mean to hyjack but if any one knows where to get these it would be a big help. Boostingdsm, you are probably gonna need these too 'cause gear teeth don't like bearing rollers
The needle bearing under 5th gear is supposed to be two pieces.
Mitsu dealers can get those parts. Norcalmitsubishi has a club DSM discount. Maybe check with your local DSM'ers for dealers with discounts.

yeah it's starting to get to me now. it's loud as hell. if i drive by a wall or something the car sounds like bullets being fired. I was thinking about going with a new clutch. guy i bought the car from claims it's a 2100 hundred act but i don't know. anyway i would like to know what i should check for while doing this change. it sounds like marbles in can sounding noise and insanely loud at low rpm like 2000rpm or so while cruising and muffled but loud at high rpm. it is not from the engine, i know this so far. some people same bell housing and such. so if you could PLEASE please please help me..... thanks
much obliged,
vishal
Does it still make the sound if you're coasting with the car in gear? Does the sound change speed if you shift to a different gear? Let me know, cuz 'marbles in a can' is the sound of engine knock.

nah it's not coming from the the engine. it's all from the tranny. the sound get louder but higher pitched at higher rpm. it's at low rpm that it gets annoying
OK, so it looks like it's time for you to drop the tranny and start checking stuff. With the trans off you'll be able to examine the clutch, TOB, input shaft, and axles. The condition of the tranny fluid could tell you something too. Is it clear fluid or sparkling metalic?

yeah the fluid is sparkling. i a just going to change the clutch when i drop the tranny. i need money so i'm waiting. i just need to know like what to look at when changing the clutch so yeah
Spakling fluid combined with that noise means that something inside the tranny is broken and the pieces are grinding into bits. No it's not good.
When you get the tranny off there are only a few things you can check with the tranny still bolted together. You can spin the input shaft to see if it turns smoothly, and you can try to move the input shaft in/out, side to side to check for loose input shaft bearings. You can also look where the axles go into the diff, but that won't tell you much unless it's really fubar'd.
What you really need to do is open up the trans and inspect everything. I have a feeling you'll find something obvious, like a tooth broken off a gear.

drw how much do you think it will cost to fix such an issue. lol just blew money on a crank pulley today so i need the cheapest yet realiable fix....thanks bro. you are the tranny man from now on
Thanks! 'Trannyman' the greatest superhero ever! :)
Cost depends on how good you want it. If you send it out to one of the better DSM tranny shops like TRE, Shep, B+MTranny it's going to cost about $850, give or take, depending on how many other parts need replacing.
If you take it to your local tranny shop and ask them to just fix what's broke, you could get away with something cheaper, but you still don't know exactly how bad it is yet. For all we know now, you could open it up and find everything is toast. dunno.
It also saves a bunch of money if you drop the trans yourself and take it to the shop.

yeah DRW i'm taking it down and then i guess take it to a shop you think....????how would then know. i'm just hoping it doesn't run me more than 300, not to mention the new clutch.
