Hey guys, thanks for any of your input. This is a great site. I just need to know what anyone thinks are either necessary or recomended changes in order to put on a set of 17" wheels on my 90 Tsi. My suspention is bone stock, but I plan on putting some cash into making my car look a little better. The factory paint is basically gone, and since I am jacking up the credit card by painting it, I may as well put on some wheels. Let me know what you think.

You dont need to do any suspension wor to the car to get the 17"s to fit. Just buy a pair of 17" rims. Make sure that they are the right offset. ANd also dont forget th eright bolt pattern. The suspension work will help the riide be better after.

if you want rims give me a E mail and I will see what I can do for you. I mostly sell ROh and about to start a group buy on ROH Snypers 17 X8 with 225 45 17's Sumitomo ( sp? ) Z II tires
I can get any brand but this just so happens what most people are asking for.
I can ship the tires mountd and ballanced for you. Comes with lugs and all need parts to install .

Actually 215/45 would be the tire width and aspect ratio, not the offset. I own a 2G so I'm not sure what the offset is for the 1Gs, though I would assume it's somewhere between 35-45. I also think (correct me if I'm wrong) that the 1G can handle up to a 235 with the right wheel offset.

Yes, both 1G and 2G can fit 235/45/17s. Keep in mind that different tire manufacturers are different widths. For example, 225 Yoko A520 might be a little wider than 225 Bidgestone SO2s. My best advice would to be call Discount Tire Direct or the Tire Rack and get the correct offset that you will need to have for the size wheel/tire that you want.
Keep in mind that lowering your car will DECREASE the space between the fender liner and the tire. If you have slammed your DSM by 2" or more it may effect how big you can go with tires. Sport Compact Car's Project Eclipse had 18" wheels with 235/40/18 Dunlops. They had lowered the car about 1.3" with Eibach Pro-Kit springs.

I did a stupid move by installing ROH snypers but the 17*9 with 245/40/17./ The fronts stuck out of teh fenders and the backs rubbed on the springs alll under normal driving. while driving fast the fronts would rub the %*@!! out of my fenders and teh back would abuse my springs(they took teh paint off) also under luanching teh back well sucked. Sold them to some guy with a spyder GSt and he loves them.
I put 17x7 rims on my car (1gen Tsi)with 42mm offset; they fit perfect and the tires (225) stay under the fenderwells. And with 17" rims you can run up that card some more with AEM big brakes.lol I don't have that much room on my card anymore!

All 1st Gen and 2nd Gen DSM's have the same offset, lug pattern, etc. Wheels are completely interchangeable between the years. In fact, I would guess the 2000-2001 EClipse wheels are interchangeable too, considering that the 2001 Eclipse GT ragtops seem to be using the 98-99 GSX 17" wheels. Galant's use a 4-bolt lug pattern, so they're pretty much SOL.
