View Full Version : Shifter Cable Bushings...HELP!

I did my research before and found a very insightful thread about the under hood shifter bushings but it didn't exactly address my problem. http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=117731&page=1&pp=25&highlight=Shifter+Cable+Bushings
Okay, but being the fool that I am I went out and spent damn near $40 dollars on 2 brass bushings from DSMparts.com. When I went to install them they were a bitch and half trying to get the cotter pin removed then trying to take the shifter cables off of the pins.
Here's my problem:
In my rage I yanked the shifter cable from the horizontal pin but the old rubber bushing still remains. Then I tried cutting through carefully to the metal piece (spacer??) in the middle so that I could install my brass bushings.
Unfortuneatley that didn't go so well either and I ended up mauling the rubber bushing. I got fed up and just put the cable back on and the cotter pin and said the hell with it until tommorrow.
I wish that I had read to put the skate board bearings instead of spending my money on it but oh well. So what can I do to take off the remaining rubber on the pin??? And also on the other cable came off but the rubber bushing wasn't even trying to come out. All I could do was to rotate the metal in the middle with the screwdriver. So I just left that alone and worked on the other one seeing the rubber was still on the pin.
Any suggestions??

Just push your thumb on the middle of the rubber where the small metal circle is and it will pop out. I always thought that was the easiest part of the "mod".

I tried doing that with a flat head screwdriver but it didn't even budge

You don't retain the rubber at all so destroy it. Who cares.

there's a metal sleve under the rubber that's siezed on the pin you need to remove that. use a torch theyr'e 6 bux at a hardware store

If you have a soldering heat gun (for the shrink wrap) that should also work

that won't work

that won't work
Thermal expansion works whether from a heat gun or a torch. It doesn't take much heat to loosen up 2 very different materials. I have unseized and removed a small bearing pressed into aluminum with my heat gun.
Better not to have a flame so close to the many other nearby wires and sensors. then if it doesn't work, step up to the flame.
K_MAN_TSI, when you tried using a heat gun how long did you hold it there and what type of gun did you use?

So I gotta buy a $6.00 tourch huh?? Okay, no problem. This mod turned out to be a pain in the ass but I guess I gotta learn, and that's what it takes when I want things to be done by myself instead of someone else.

what I did to get mine out was use a socket from a wrench set that was just large ehough that it caught the outside lip of the shifter cable housing thing that holds the shifter bushing in place. I then used one of those old-school clamps (sorry don't know the actual name, it's the screw kind that has 2 circular ends). the ends of the clamps were small enough so that the ends could push the bushing out of the housing and not catch the shifter cable lip. So when you clamp everything down, you have everything set up right you tighten the clamp down, the bushing comes out of the housing and into the socket wrench. Hope this makes sense, if it doesn't then I can draw up a quick picture when I get home :)

Don't forget to take the sandpaper from the kit that the brass bushings came with and clean the insides of the linkage once you get the old rubber piece out. And use any means necessary, you're not reusing the metal sleeve or the rubber piece.

Okay this has been a bitch of a problem. Such an insignificant modification is pissing me the fuck off right now. I tried everything under the sun to get the old bushings off. I tried burning, cutting, and pulling with no luck at all.
Currently, I cut all the rubber off of the vertical pin and all that remains is the metal that goes covering the pin which seems impossible to be removed. I haven't even messed with the other shifter cable still containing the old rubber.
I'm in need of getting this thing installed because all that is hanging on is the shifter cable and the thin washer held by the cotter pin. It looks like the shifter cable is ready to fly off at any moment. Its just unsafe.
I talked to the guys up at Mach V for some suggestions and to see if that they could help me out but unfortuneatley they have too many other projects to take care. Which I can understand, but still sucks. I felt like a dumbass asking them anyways.
This soooo sucks...

Well the more expensive route, but less of a headache is to purchase new shifter cables. Can you get a pic to give us a visual on how to help you?

Ummm...I think I can. I have a digital camera but I don't know how to do any of the hosting stuff. I'll take some 2morrow.

I had to cut the bushing off with a dremel cutting wheel, I tried just about everything from torch to PB blaster and a prybar.

Did u end up cutting into the pin a little. That's what I'm afraid of.

I may have scratched it a bit but nothing damaging. I went the skate board bearing way so the inner shaft really doesnt need to be 100%.

How much of difference do you think it made???
Just get a dremel and cut that bitch.

Well I did a few mods at once so it was a drastic change for me. I did the skate board BB endlinks, metal washers under the shifter mount, and a b&m knockoff short shifter. The car shifts very posative now, I can tell that its in gear and the shifter doesnt feel like jello.

Finally, SUCCESS! :D
I went to Wal-Mart and bought a dremel and just cut that bitch off. Then I sanded down the pins and the holes to the shifter cable, applied some WD40 to everthing and I did the install.
It shifts really smoothe now. Even reverse is a breeze to get into and I don't mind the rifle clank noise. Now I'm just waiting on my Greddy Heavy duty shifter and that should do it.
Thanks a whole lot for your suggestions.
Much appreciated.
I wish that I had read to put the skate board bearings instead of spending my money on it but oh well.
I don't think this warrants its own thread and I don't want to bump a thread that's over a year old so I might as well ask in this thread, are the skateboard bearings 'one size fits all' or is there a certain size I need to ask for? The closest skateshop is 30 miles away so that's why I ask here instead of at the shop itself :o

The shop I got mine from called them 308 high speed sealed wheel bearings.
