I had a good experience with Jim from JM Fabrications. His products have been spoken of before in Parts Talk. I ordered a 1G sheet intake from him on June 22. He had just completed a move into a new shop and had kept in touch with me to notify me of when ordering would be back online. I received a couple automatically generated emails saying my order had been processed and would ship with notification in 10-14 days. On the 11th day I emailed him for a status update and he responded saying his supplier for flanges was running behind. Four days later I got a note from him apologizing profusely for the delay and that he would finish the manifold up and overnight to me it at no extra cost (which is much more than I can say for some other vendors). He did exactly that, sent it out last Friday, and it arrived here today.
Good communication, great price, good customer service, and the product looks fantastic. I will have a review of the intake itself at some point, but suffice it to say the vendor gets good marks in my book. Here are some teasers of the manifold (please excuse the dryer as a backdrop):

Good to hear positive reviews
That intake manifold looks awesome, I'm interested in an intake just like that.
If you do a before an after dyno, I would love to see the results. :)

I would have loved to do a back-to-back dyno comparison, as I do have relevant dyno numbers from back when my car was running. Unfortunately my new setup will be different enough from the old that I'm not sure how meaningful the comparison will be.

Looks like you made a good choice. My brother and I both have this manifold on our cars and we're all around very impressed. Jim is a really good fabricator and easy to talk to.

And he is close enough to me that I can kick him in the manhood if he were to screw any DSMtalkers over. :P
Jim is a great guy and his fab work is absolutely top notch. If I need something done with metal he is the only guy I trust. :)

looks nice! i remember you telling me you were gonna buy that one. have you compared it to the stock one at all as far as where it places the throttle body? i'm trying to set aside money right now towards getting the same manifold for myself, and i'm wondering what i'm going to have to change piping-wise to fit it up

Well here is a comparison between the sheet intake and the 1G stocker:
http://users.adelphia.net/~nukefission/car/images/hrp1/images/smim9a.jpg
http://users.adelphia.net/~nukefission/car/images/hrp1/images/smim8.jpg
http://users.adelphia.net/~nukefission/car/images/hrp1/images/smim9.jpg
Some rough measurements indicate the new TB position will be about 3.5" lower in the engine bay and about 1" farther back towards the firewall than the stock location. Depending on how your pipes are setup, you may have enough play in the couplers to get it to fit. I'm most likely re-doing my pipes anyway (for a new BOV, etc) so it doesn't matter much to me.

Thanks for all the great comments, I put alot of time into each manifold to make sure they look great, and are built well. I should have dyno results in the up coming weeks, things have just been a little crazy with moving into the new shop and taking on some new projects.
Thanks,
Jim

Do you guys pass emissions in PA with this on?

If you hook up all of the emmisions equipment I don't see that you would have any problems.

It doesn't have a spot for the EGR valve...
I couldn't tell you though, my inspection is from early 03 :)

I cant say for sure either, my car is emissions exempt, you could always swap on the stock intake come inspection time....

don't know about PA, but i know emmissions in Va can be passed with no EGR. with a little bit of tuning, as long as you have a cat

FYI, I had to grind some of the welds down for the throttle to clear. No big deal.

I've already taken flack from several people (in person and online) about how the intake is by far the most shiny thing on the motor. "You need a new valve cover" "You need a new this/that/the other" :P

Nukefission awesome looking power plant! I saw that you mentioned the intake was a bit wider than stock. I have a similar intake. Dont think Jim did mine. It was on the car when I got it. Clearanace issue caused him to move the break reservoir and the coils.

What it the over-all width from the top on the T/B flange to the head flange?
anconover
08-27-2005, 04:32 PM
on the normal ones i think its probly 10.5" or so. I believe he uses 6" runners, .5" flange and a 4" deep plenum.
But jims aways given me excellent service and excellent products.

Some of our customers that run our intake are:
* Nate Crissman of DSMotorsport - '90 Talon - 10.0@147
* Keith Loforte of TurboTrix - '92 Talon - 10.1@143
* Jake Montgomery - '92 Talon - 10.6@139

I ordered my SMIM from Jim this past year and I was very pleased with his work, he over nighted my intake as well at no extra charge, great guy and will be doing business with him again.
So far this manifold has held rock solid and still looks like it did when I bought it, I have ran over 30+lbs of boost through this intake well over 200 times and have never had one issue.
I don't have any back to back data since I changed alot of things when I got his manifold, but I can tell ya that it picked up a ton of power up top above 6000rpm and up, My car pulls hard and clean all the way up to 9500rpm with out and power drop, well from what I can feal anyway.
Now Jim, get building some exhaust manifolds!! I wanna see you build one!

Just for future measure you sould've ground down the tab on the throttle body not the weld it could compromise the strength of that weld. Also that tab is just useless. I have his manifold I love it and I had to grind that tab no biggy but for future buyers that's what you should do not grind the weld.
nukefission
12-08-2005, 09:12 PM
I'm aware of the effect that grinding welds has, which is why I took only the minimum amount off. Grinding the tab would not have made a difference in my case because the weld was interfering with the throttle through its entire sweep.
HighPSI TSi Guy

I filed the weld just a hair with a file and it works fine for me, you can hardly tell it was filed at all.
I'm very pleased with the manifold so far, looks awesome in the bay, and though i haven't gotten around to turning the boost up yet since i changed clutches at the same time and am still breaking in the new one.. but at low boost i can tell a huge gain, so i'm sure at high boost it'll be that much better!
