My car was knockin real bad cuz of the lifters and then it was accleratering very good either. My car is a 99 spyder with only 94 k on it. My mechanic said in the next month the car was gonna be worthless. So in my mind.. I wanted to look for a new car.. Then i realized I want my baby with me.

SO was it smart to just drop a new engine in it? the same kind besides there is no knockin and it is perfect workin order? it only has 48 k. My car is about 2 go into the shop... should I said no.. or just drop it...

That mechanic sounds a little worthless if all he can tell you is the car is going to be worthless in a month. I dont have too much respect for mechanics like that sounds like you need a second opinion before you swap out the engine. Its hard to tell you what to do since we dont have the whole story on the original engine. Is it burning fluids? Whats the exhaust smoke look like? Black is excess fuel, blue=oil, pure white=antifreeze. All of which can help lead you in the direction of your problem. Could be bad head gasket could be intake leaks. Could be a million things, but for a mechanic to just say that its worthless in a month is pretty crappy. Sounds like he's downgrading your intelligence and isnt worth seeing again. In my opinion I say figure out the root of your problem and see if its cheaper to fix it rather than just jumping to open heart surgury. Who knows how long that "new" engine will run either.

Welcome to the site. Where in missouri do you live? I used to live in Clinton, Warrensburg and Windsor for a short period of time.

Lifter knock should not be a problem, your problem with acceleration could be a boost leak and easy to fix, you should get that checked out before putting in a new motor. You dont state if its a turbo or not so I am assuming it is.

here is a link (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/ICtester.html) to a site that tells you how to make a boost leak tester, its cheaper then a motor and something you can reuse if you do have to replace your engine. There are a number of things that can cause your car to stumble. bad plugs, clogged filter(s) or even your o2 sensor ( had that problem with my 91 Integra ). You should check out the lower priced solutions before dumping a couple grand on an engine.

There are others here who are more knowledgable then me and I am sure they will add their thoughts.

again, welcome to the forums

Then you should definitly check out wires, rotor, cap, bad plugs, clogged filter(s) or even your o2 sensor.

How many miles on the engine? I am not sure if 420a's have lifter tick, maybe someone else would know.

Hes, got a spyder so wouldn't that be a 4G64 and not a 420a

Look on the bright side since its not a turbo you can rule out a huge list of potential problems. Should be a little easier to diagnose.

Did the mechanic give you any reasons as to why it would be useless? Or was it just a general statement to make money off of you? For your own good ask questions. Have someone throw a scanner on it. A knock can be caused by a number of small problems. Lifters need adjusting, bad injectors, even an exhuast leak can sound like an engine knock. Go get a second opinion and don't jump the gun. Otherwise, I think you'll be spending money you don't have to.

What I don't understand is how a mechanic can say a whole engine is worthless? I mean there is no way a whole block, pistons, head and everything could be bad. That mechanic sounds like a fucktard. Get a second opinion and ask them whats all good on it, I am sure that every part on that car isn't bad. Sounds like a good time for a badass rebuild to me.
