Im new here, I've been looking around at dsm's. I had a Talon TSi that caught my eye, AWD turbo, that whole deal. The thing is though it has a broken timing belt, which means a timing belt and a valve job for it. My question is (and Im sorry I tried to search) is how much would it roughly cost to get the timing belt, and valves done?

if you take it to a shop to have all the work done look to pay around $1600.
if youre doing it your self figure about $800-$1000 for all new parts/rebuilt head. or $200-$400 if you get a used/good head.

Just be careful.. don't assume it will just be valves and the timing belt. When I bought my 1g project, I was told timing belt slipped and bent a few valves. Pulled the head, valves were broken off and there was a hole in piston #4.
I guess I'm just trying to say that it might, and very well possibly could, turn into a much bigger problem and a lot of money

Excellent point. Most lower rpm, or "broke when I started it" situations end up in some S bends in the valves...
A 4 or 6k rpm SNAP usually results in some serious ugly.
Pistons... or even the valves turned in to the head, gouging the combustion chamber roof... This equates to a FULL head replacement. And most likely pistons that look like mangled ass.
If you're terrified pull the spark plugs and look down the hole with a flashlight. If you see wreckage... figure worst case scenario.
I bought my car in the exact same circumstances you are considering.
Mine was very minor. And barely had a mark on the pistons' reliefs.

I haven't had a chance to look at the car yet, but what would you guy say is a resonable price. Yes I will be doing all of the head work myself. They are asking 800 OBO, so what do you guys think.

people sell shells for that much. If the trans is good then it is worth almost that much for the tranny and rear end. esp. if its a 4 bolt rear. Is it a 1g or 2g? really just check over the body for rust. thats the hardest thing to fix. otherwise 800 isnt a bad price if you are looking for a project.

everything is there, just a broken timing belt. It's a 1g '91 talon tsi awd. So I figure I might be able to get them to go down to 600/500 somewhere.

If they are asking 800obo, I'm sure you could go there with $500 in hand and they would take it. :tree:
