A lil bit about the Candy Eclipse

This car use to be a nt (thats right)
It also has 5 other DSM's in it.
So far It has been to 187MPH :eek:

Mods thus far?

Where to start where to start.

Lets begin with the engine. ;)

It is a seasoned 2.0 6 bolt 4g63 6-bolt block, with balance shafts removed. As far as the rotating assembly goes, it a proven set-up consisting of crower rods, JE pistons (9:0.1) free floated with arp mains and head studs. All speed balanced to 15k RPM :eek: She rumbles and shakes down low but when the rpms climb its like music.
The Head sports ferrea super alloy valves with ferrea valve guides, and crower springs and titanium retainers, porting is excessive. ;) The bump sticks of choice are HKS 272's.
Original Turbo was a pte 57 trim, But Now has a custom FP/ Garrett GT35R With a 44mm V-band gate on it.
I am fixing to put the ems and injectors in and who knows what the future holds. All I can say is I am looking for 550+ on pump gas, and a top speed past 190 :eek:

A really nice tune and everything to support it, Just thought I would share the other things done to the car and plans as well.
I am on transmission #6 clutch # I forgot. All bushings in the car have been replaced with prothane, I have done some unsafe removing of metal as well to bring the weight down. It has agx's and eibach sportlines at the moment.


My plans to do 200mph

Thin aluminum sheet metal the entire underside of the car, enhance the stock spoiler to increase downforce, more unsafe metal removal. Cage. Swap the sportlines/ agx's for coilovers. Add Stoptech brakes.Dual plate clutch, and a built transmission. Also when I do hit 200 it will be recorded. ;) Anyone want to ride with me?

I have a bunch of other stuff with the car too but you guys can probally figure it out. ;)

In an awd this is true, this is a fwd turbo trans. Yes they have been stock thats why I have had 6 of them.

Beautiful car girl, you know I've always been a big fan of it. Have you ever considered using something like fiberglass instead of sheetmetal underneath the car? Either way remember to make sure that you've either got some access panels or at least make the front half easily removable for servicing the motor.

It wasn't that bad. (In a porsche) Although the OMFG factor does go up considerably from 140-150 area. 200mph would be cool! I hope you get there. You're going to need some taller gears and alot of tach!

hey charity, you may be able to persuade jon @ TRE into making you a 200mph 5th gear... it's 25% taller, puts you at 200 at 7500 i believe.

he was trying to get rid of them so bad a couple years ago if you had a vid of you hitting 200 on a road, he's give you the money back for the gear...

extreme ran their car up to 200 on the dyno, pussies, lol.

Edit: I think I remember him saying that a dsm will need around 600whp to push through the atmosphere at that speed though.

Thats an awesome car. I like the hood, its different and definitely looks awesome with that paint. And Im +10000 for the 200mph mark on video. Most people are aiming to get their 1/4 time down, and your aiming to go 200mph, IN A 1G! Lets hope it doesnt fall apart! Lol good luck, keep us posted!

I honestly like the car. It's very clean and looks good. Good job, it's really nice compared to alot of 1st gen's I've seen..

Honestly, I don't think it will hit the 200 mph mark though. Airflow and aerodynamics become the dominant factor at those speeds. Not only that, but I just don't see it happening. I HOPE it does though.
And where the hell do you go to test a car going that speed? Seriously though.
You should try lightening the car if you can. Power/weight ratio is key here. I'd strip that car down if I could.

Here's a little something I dug up.

Many accident reconstructionists have long used one second for perception and .75 seconds for reaction. The PRT used in AASHTO design standards--for "average" drivers--includes 1.5 sec. for perception and decision and 1.0 sec. for reacting.

That's 2.5 seconds IF you are 100% FULLY attentive.

At 200mph, you are covering MORE than three quarters of a football field EVERY second. In 2.5 seconds (IF YOU ARE ON YOUR TOES,) you will have covered TWO ENTIRE football fields just to react to something ahead of you. That's best case scenario and pure science.

If you don't care about the danger to you, that's fine - live with your ignorance but don't put innocent bystanders (other motorsists or pedestrians) at harms way by doing this on a public road.

It's not like I haven't told you this before. Glad to see it went in through one ear and out the other. :wall:

Just a quick update for you guys, the original engine decided it was time for retirement at 50k mile, and toasted a piston, turned out I had a crack in the intake manifold. So far new engine is in, and here is what its equipped with ;

Bottom;
Ross pistons .30 over 8:3.1 comp with coatings
Pauter connecting Rods
ACL tri metal bearings
All new oem pump,seals and oil filter housing
New arp hardware
Earls -10an 32 row oil cooler with -10 lines
Top;
Fully ported head with ferrea super alloys, and app goodies

Soon to come is pictures
I have changed other things on the car as well, got some 17x9 zigen zr+ rims with azenis rt615 245-45 17 tires, and a new suspension to boot.
This thing should scream fellas!

The log was all 11.5- 12.0 egt's were fine, no knock, on 15psi, i didnt figure it out till i pulled the head and the piston was missing the top of the crown, totally mystified me.:confused:

You can melt pistons and not knock, knock is a timing issue, at every a/f ratio there is a theoretical timing value that the engine will not knock at. You can run a car lean to melt and still not have a knocking issue which is why people run 4 individual EGT gauges.

As for the ARPs, good luck...i'd have dumped them a long time ago.

I'm PRETTY sure the cars running the Texas mile trapping 200mph+ are not running/monitoring EGTs' in every cylinder. I know the 228mph *record holding* Supra wasn't. EGTs are 90s technology. To me...they are pretty damn useless as far as tuning is concerned. I am sorry, but the tempt. reflected on that gauge (if placed in an exhaust runner) does NOT neccessarily depict actual tempt of the combustion chamber at that particular time. That's a big con on that monitoring device. Tune the car on a conservative afr and you will not have to worry about tempts high enough to melt a piston. EGT gauges are not a pre-requisite. Give me a wideband over a crappy EGT gauge anyday. :)

Duh...you inspect the plugs. :rolleyes: That will tell you everything right there.

As nice as that cage is, is there a reason other than aesthetics you put the rear bars down to the trunk floor? Structurally they do nothing (passed the strut towers)

Nope, bars are required to be at the rear structural points of the car, the strut towers are the rearmost structural point we have, everything behind it is crash bumper.

Well since i havent updated everyone in a while i figured what the hey.:dunno:

I got to run the car at IFO in sept twice and I ran a couple times on the azenis's at the midnights

well on street tires i got 15'4 @ 129 :puke:


then at ifo on slicks i got

11.7@122

That was the second run and i was being easy on it as I have stock axles.

I havnt had a chance to do any 200mph runs but im sure it can do it. The car spins till 90mph if im on it and breaks loose at 70:eek: aero enhancements havent happened yet, i'm just to busy anymore so the car just basically sets while I work :o

Next year the boost will be risen for the strip and i will have axles then, should be in the 10's for sure:cool:

Yeah,not to gang up on you. I've tapped out a factory gearbox at 170mph at over 9,300rpm's. I've got pretty tall gears in my Shepherd dogbox and still need over 10,000rpm's to get close to 195mph.
190mph in a 1G DSM without some major suspension upgrades is fast. I hope your not testing this thing out on public roads !?!?

Not to be rude,but I don't think there are too many guys/women in the DSM community that rival John.
Besides,his car runs a factory unibody,but it has been modified and lightened and strengthened to the point that it can go straight while making 7 sec. passes with probably over 1,300whp.
Thats not easy to say the least. If that were a completely bone stock chassis it would never be able to go as straight as it does with the amount of power John is making.I don't think it will be long before we see him making 6 second passes out of that car.
