1991 Eclipse GSX, 122,000 miles (yes, that paint is original!)

Many of you are already familiar with the recent progress on my car via the two threads: Diary of a Rebuild (http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137882) and Diary of a Rebuild II (http://www.dsmtalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=165784).

This is my 2nd of 4 DSMs. A NT '91 Eclipse was my first car, but in 2000 I saw the GSX on a dealer lot with only 59,000 miles on it. I picked it up and sold the NT. Between then and 2002, the modding process was somewhat slow as I added an exhaust, clutch, boost controller, etc. My very first drag race was at the 2001 DSM Shootout, where I ran a 13.6 @ 100 and finished 4th in the autocross (also a first). I was hooked.

Since then, the car has gone through several changes and one blown engine (2.4L). In the past two years, the car has been running only a few months. Hopefully the new motor/turbo combination will last a bit longer.

Glad to be the first to say, " If your car looking for a BF? " Because its damned nice looking.

I'd hit it.

Seriously! How about some more pics! The only ones i've seen have been in your driveway or your garage!! Give it what it deserves!!

On a side note...i'm looking to switch to a twin disc clutch and was hoping you had some sort of a review on the PT. I saw your post in your last diary thread but it was short and sweet. Do you know of any differences between this one and the Quartermaster or Exedy? First impressions? Quality, driveability, power holding...

Great build up by the way!

Hehe, I think Vic's car is afraid of the camera.

That is a mod list to be jealous of for sure.

Part of the reason is that the car was badly keyed a couple years ago. It's easy to hide in pics from far away. Once another nice day rolls around I'll wash it and take some good pics.

Forgot to post numbers. The last drag race was many moons ago in 2002. It ran a 12.2 @ 112 on a 16G. Later it dyno'd 421hp/360tq on the SCM61 and the factory 2.0 block.

The car is a dyno queen now as I have no aspirations for drag strip times anymore, partly because the closest decent track is 2 hours away. I intend to return to the dyno soon once I get the bugs worked out of the current setup. I'll dyno it on pump, then later on good gas once I get the Bosch pump in.

More pics there. They are 2+ years old, but nothing has changed since then in terms of the exterior. The one interior shot is outdated.

I still plan to deliver some current pics. :)

What was your boost setting on the SCM61 dyno and when did it hit full boost if ya don't mind me asking?

Thank you,

Jason

On the street it hit 20 psi at around 4200 RPM in 3rd gear. On that dyno pull I ran 25 psi on a pump/race gas mix. You can see the boost hitting later on that chart I guess because of the odd loading of the dyno.

Went to the dyno last night and put down 483whp right off the street at 22 psi. Swapped in some C16 and made 627whp/505tq at 34 psi. Below is the graph. The torque reading down low is messed up because we had a hard time getting a good tach reading.

http://users.adelphia.net/~nukefission/car/images/hrp3/627.jpg

I would like to have hit 500whp on the street tune but I didn't spend much time with it. I'm confident it would have been possible as with the tweaks made between the two pump gas pulls I did, considerable gains were seen (11hp by adding 1 deg of timing, for example). Both pump and race gas tunes were on the rich side, as well.

I had some clutch slippage on the dyno and later on the street, after making the 627, because the organic discs I was using weren't up to the task. In the next couple weeks I'll finally get around to pulling the clutch out and sending it to PTT to get fitted with the metallic discs and a higher torque-holding pressure plate.

The power on the dyno was limited by my fuel pressure regulator, which wouldn't supply more than 46 psi of base fuel pressure. It's the old-style Spoolinup regulator, but it came with a stiffer diaphragm spring which I still have and intend to install. Once I get that and the clutch ironed out, it's back to the dyno with a goal of at leat 500 on pump and 650 on C16, which will be the limit of the turbo anyway. :)

You are an idol! I wish I could hit something that decent. I guess after I find a safc, injectors and fpr on a tuners budget I'll see what my car has....

i see that you are using a nt tb, did you just get a 1g's nt throttle body out of a junk yard, replace the seals and put it on? Or did you have the shaft machined to put in the turbo seals to help it seat better?

nukefission
03-30-2007, 04:51 PM
I didn't have anything on the TB machined.

seminoles2005
03-30-2007, 10:58 PM
do you know if you used the same o-rings from the turbo throttle bodies? Yours held 600+ to the wheels and people were saying that these will leak, im sold after seeing that. time to hit some junk yards

nukefission

It was a long time ago, but I think I used the seals from MachV. It leaks a tiny bit but it's negligible.
