Would it bend any valves or do any other damage? I've seen it done in a 2.4 before without having any problems.

When I said no problems I meant no internal damage. Yes it won't idle and has no power.

honestly, my timing was off one tooth when I bought the car and all the exhaust valves were bent.

If you're to the point where you are doing a timing belt, and you can't answer this question yourself, then I would get help asap. :)

I just got this car last weekend. Did your car run being off one tooth?

Congrats :)

Yeah it ran, but poorly. It barely wants to idle, and since the valves were bent, it smoked(a little), and had really low compression.

I dunno, I wouldn't run it like that. But if you like those symptons, then go for it.

Thanks for the help. Sounds like mine. The guy said he sold it because it overheated. I ran it for like a half hour without any over heating problems. It did make some noise from the timing belt area. The more I think about it the more I think the valves are hitting the pistons. At that point I checked the belt and noticed it was off one tooth. I was going to set it right but it might not pay now.

I had both cams off one notch (they where aligned with each other but not with the top of the head). Before I noticed my stupidity, I had started and, briefly, gently, driven it. As it started to warm up, it would start missing at idle, and the CEL would come on. After resetting the belt, I have 150 psi on all cylinders. Freekin Miracles do happen.

If you ask anyone here, they will tell you to "stop screwin around and pull the head because you have a bent valve (or all of them) for sure".

I felt that I'd rather attempt my first timing belt BEFORE I'd invested in a re-built head. I should note that the TB had spun at the crank pulley at idle. She turned it over, the tow-truck driver turned it over, and I turned it over. I figured at that point I didn't have much to lose.
