I am in-process of installing a stereo setup that involves a PPI 4-chan amp, and replacement speakers in doors and rear panels.

I have test-fitted the Kenwood 6909 6x9" speakers I bought for the rear panels. To my dismay, the magnet is too big and hits the metal panel behind the speaker opening. I will try using washers and longer screws to offset the ~1/2" of height needed, but then the stock speaker grille won't fit.

What has other people here done about this? The interior will look mighty ugly with a gaping hole surrounding the speaker.

i had tha same problem.. there is no way to make that 6x9 fit.. what i did was i just went down to a smaller size specker 6& a half.. mid, tweet & crossover combo.. it makes it easier.. al u have to do is use a piece of wood to mount the 6.5s then mount the tweeter anywhere u want.. it accually sounds better than squishing the 6x9s in .. .. hope that helps dood..

Well I had this same problem with my Infinity kappa 6x9's way back in my old 95 GS. Basically what I did was the trim on the panel that pokes out behind the speaker grill, I trimmed that down. Basically look at the back of the plastic panel behind the speaker gril and you will see a ridge that pokes out. I just took a dremel to it and then smoothed it down. It was more than enough to get the thing in there. Anyone see any problems with this type of installation?

thats what i plan on doing as soon as it gets warm out. Just shave the plastic on the back of the panels down so they fit.

you know what works well? Dunno what you guys would say, but, basically.. if the speaker is too big and hits the metal, use washers. The thing that works well for me is these shower washers used in plumbing. They are clear rubber, that have a hole for a screw in the center. They dampen vibration completely.. so no rattling unlike metal washers, and you can use however many to get the right clearance. they are about 4mm thick. They are used on sliding shower doors, with screws to hold up the sliding rail on the vertical part of the door, while providing a bumpstop for the sliding door.

Most decent aftermarket 6x9's will not fit in our cars. I did a 6.5 inch component set front and rear and no issues fitting everything in there.

It sounds amazing. There are no pics though since they are in the factory locations.

Made a plate that was 6x9 and then mounted the tweeter and mid to it.

interesting. . . . how long does it take to make the box like that? Did you have a shop build it for you? Did you loose your spare tire? 2 10's?

BLAH... i put a pair of 8w7's, a jl 300/4, a jl 500/1, an alpine 12 disc cd changer, a cap, and a couple other things in the trunk of a spider while keeping the spare tire and jack. sounds freakin incredible, and he still has space to keep some stuff in his trunk :)

i had pictures, but my computer crashed the other day and i had to wipe the drive clean and start over :( i put them on a disk to put on the company's website, and i'm gonna try and get it back now but it'll probably be a little while. i'm not exactly sure who has it.

My friend built it for me. He had the car for about a week but that was to install everything in the stereo, as well as the coilovers, strut bars, turbo timer, and alarm.

How do the 8w7's sound in a car? I listened to one in a store yesterday, and it sounded damn good for such a small sub. I'm putting the fiberglass box for it together now, my amp is on the way (PG Ti 400.2) and I'll be picking the 8w7 up on monday probably.

they sound absolutely incredible. the more of them i install, the more i like them :) with 400-500 rms of some clean power, it'll rock! i was verry very impressed with that pair of them i put in the spyder, even for being a convertible the bass was extremely cleean, powerful, and tight. make sure you brace the holy hell out of a fiberglass box for them though, even for an 8 they are very heavy. the box i made was part mdf and part glass, probably weighed around 80-90 lbs with the subs.sounded awesome though :)

Well, PG's titanium line is known to be under rated, and this amp is listed at 400wrms on a 4 ohm load, but stable down to 2 ohms bridged(so I figured it won't even be working hard at 3 ohms). The fuse thats reccomended to use is 60 amps so I'm sure it should be plenty of nice clean a/b class power for my little 8w7. The box is 5-6 layers of heavy mat, plus 3/8" rope soaked in resin looped back and forth all over the box. I've yet to put the front baffel on (2 layers of 3/4" mdf laminated togther) or the top, plus i've got more bracing to do and i'm up to 15 lbs of just fiberglass. I've got this crazy idea to hang some of the rope soaked in resin from somthing so it can dry straight, then use that as bracing to connect the front back & sides, plus I've got a case of duplicolor ruberized undercoat & sound dampening here wating to be used to dampen the shit out of this box. :D
