Hey , we are building a turbo kit for my friends mirage. We are going to use a mitsubishi turbo. I have heard that whenever they do this they just dont use the waterlines.. What will happen if you do this. Will it reduce the life of the turbo or what?

daily driven in the long term it MIGHT suffer a short life B/C of that. as a racer it will live a long time.

They use water to help keep the oil and bearings cool but is more or less a long term thing not like it's going to blow up with out water. Many people do not run water lines on the race cars DSM's out at the track.

Fir the most part you shoule be ok but hey, it was made to run water then run water it will only help.

On the other hand turbos that are not water cooled live a loing life B/c now the oil is asked to do the job that the water jacket is doing.

Good Luck

IF you cool it down before shutting off the engine every time it will be fine. Older cars came with oil only cartridge turbos oe, you just have to use a good synthetic (mobil 1) and allow the cartridge too cool down so the oil won't choke.

will the same thing apply to ball bearing turbos? I heard this
"Being a garret ball bearing turbo it is absolutely essential that you fit the water lines. Ball bearings are a full 360 degree design and as such the oil cooling is limited. Whilst they do not require the high pressure oil feed that older turbo's require - water lines do make the cooling much more efficient. Turbo's get too hot at the best of times."
See where buying a turbo kit for my friends mirage and it comes witha a garrett ball bearing t-28 turbo. Problem is he is selling is the oil lines and the water lines for 175bucks. Obviously i think that is too expensive..lol.

first off I wouldn't wast the cash on a BB T28 but that is just IMHO (junk)

Nick GOOD JOKE about that '"Good oil" mobil 1!! LOL now that is a funny one. you crank me up < grin>
hahahah ( Yes I hate M1. Poor mans Syn oil. your better off wth GTX castro and change it more often and run a high quility syn oil like Amsoil/Royal P and such. I am a AmSoil man my self.

I am not a huge fan of BB turbo for the most part your going to tell me that a BB unit will have LESS friscton then a oil bearing?? If so them why isn't there one on my crank?? When it fails ( not IF, WHEN ) it will cost more to replace. you can run many more oil bearing turbo's on the car for the cost of a BB unit. For the most part the BB's are good but not worth the extra cash IMHO. the only gain is compresser surge protection, it will withstand a lot more.

The reason the BB came about is from F1 cars. we are not in F1 cars!! hhehe The BB's are used in this class for the simple reason that they last. COST IS NOT A FACTOR!! this is why they run them. they need to have this thing surge ,beat on , spool fast, surge again .get dam hot and keep going all day at 80K + RPM's. this is the reason for BB units. I'll stick with Oil and get my 3-1 raito of cost per unit. ( 3 oil bearing turbo's for one of the BB ones. )

Now about the oil pressure. I can not comment this is outlined by the manf. what the needs for the ubnit are. This turbo that your talking about is it a KKK unit or a garrett? many get confused what they really have.

that is a bit steep for used lines. I would look more in to your own. if they were new then NP that is OK for all 4 lines but its used.

Even with water cooling you should still let it cool like Nick said. This is standard for all turbo cars.

Good luck
Use the water

see the thing is the nobody makes a turbokit for a mirage. These people do. They use either a garrett bb t-25 or bb t-28 which cost 1046.00. That is about 100 dollars more than a us unit. All the lines are new though. We decided we will just make them ourselves. Check out what he said about the bb garrett turbos that comein the kit...

"The specs are as follows :

(1) T-25 0 - 200hp rating (Handles up to 16 psi boost and can max out around 240hp). No turbo lag and great midrange top end acceleration. Perfect for up to 12 psi boost on the 1.8 / 1.5 Mirage models.

(2) T-28 0 - 300hp rating (Handles up to 20 psi boost on small motors). Can produce up to 350hp no problems and is the best size turbo for the 1.8 motor.

(3) T-25R 300 - 350hp rating. Best for consistent high boost application and requires the use of an external wastegate controller.

All of these are ball bearing turbo's so although technically the A/R ratios etc are the same as there non ball bearing counterparts, they do flow on average 40% more and hit boost at a very low rpm level. Our turbo lancer hit boost at 1500rpm.

Other specs are as follows :

Compressor Stage Turbine Stage
Hsg Wheel . Model Whl Com HSG Whl Whl
A/R Trim Diam Flow A/R Trim Diam

(1) T-25 0.80 60 TB25 1.66/2.14 28 0.64 62 1.64/2.09
(2) T-28 0.60 60 TB03 1.83/2.37 31 0.64 62 1.64/2.09
(3) T-25R 0.70 48 T04S 2.09/3.00 44 0.64 76 1.85/2.12

The T-25 and T-28 come with the actuator assembly. "

What do you think

We can just doa manifold here ourselves through local people but we are looking into premade "bolt on installation"

I crank you up? Is that some cheesy engine joke Bill ;)?

Castrol GTX WHAT? Now you're getting all silly :). I used to use that in my hondas, it works ok, but it doesn't handle high temps worth crap.
I wouldn't buy castrol "synthetic" either. The base is a remanufactured dino oil. The reason synthetic costs so much is because of the added cost of the synthetic base. So with their "synthetic" castrol has a HUGE profit margin. Sorry I just don't like products with "ubendmeoverthetable" listed as their main ingredient.

I don't have any problem with amsoil, but that would require the forthought of ordering it. I'm too lazy.

Besides which the chances of puprle elphants flying out of my butt are about as likely as me getting enough mileage on the eclipse so that would be an issue. The engine only has 2.5k on it right now.....
