I am building a '97 Eclipse GSX from the ground up. I have always loved cars and my dad has always had the classic musle car. I am in the process of building a Pro Street Eclipse. There is not a single part of this car that will remain stock but I will be making the car streetable. I have bought many of the parts for this car and still have many more to acheive this vision of mine.

I am starting this thread and will continue to update it as I build this car. Please feel free ask questions.

*If this is not the right forum to post this please move it to the correct location and I will continue there.

I bought the car stock with 67,000 miles on it.

http://i160.photobucket.com/albums/t171/e_miller81/EclipseGSX27.jpg

The first thing I did when I bought the car was strip the car down to the frame. I have boxed up everything as I won't be seeing the wiring and other items for awhile. I bought a rotesery and put my car on the stand.

I will be sand blasting the car to remove the sound material from the inside and out side. I will follow up with a Roll Cage installed and the underneath of the car painted. I will post pictures when I get this done.

Wow thats bad ass that you have that frame stand. :) GL on the build..

The Frame has been sandblasted and primer, now I must spend time getting the rest of the sand out. That will take me awhile I'm guessing. I'm already running low on cash for now so I don't think I will be able to do the cage until spring.

Bought Tubular Manifold tonight also, I'm pretty excited.

Wow, insane work way to go!

Although I love what you are doing, I don't really understand what is 'Pro Street' about it?

I'm also not such a big fan of the body kit idea but hey, your car!

Jk's97DSM

Is it Pro Street like drag or like a all around car? Josh has a good point about the body kit. You must know that all true DSMer's do not like body kits and flashy shit except for the shiny stuff that makes you go faster.

Thanks for the support.

The car will be close to an all out race car but will have the necessary things to be driven on the street. Its a term the muscle cars use and I'm going to be doing a few things that typically will do to there cars.

The reason I went with this body kit is to have a wider tire and still have a sleek look. I won't be just bolting the kit and molding it, I have plans to customize it a little.

I'm not sure of the power I will produce, I'm hoping I will be over 500awhp and 450 torque.

No offense but only running a GT30 and FP2 cams isn't much of an "all out race car"

I'm actually running a bigger setup than that and even I think of myself as a small man on the todem pole. Albeit my car would be cabable of mid 10s, single diggits juiced I still think you need a bigger setup before you consider your car prostreet...

Think of it this way, you'd be racing Jake Montgomery in his Evil Eagle and he runs damn near 8s... You'll be lucky to run high 10s..

Just something to think of.

Other than that, good job. And you get another please don't as far as the body kit goes.. Race cars don't have body kits.. :(

It just depends...SOME do, some dont. These cars and many others, come from the factory with a body kit and a wing, so dont go kicking on them since you live in a glass house as well.

When your talking drag racing you are correct. This car will not see the dragstrip all that much. I'm more into road racing and thats why the smaller turbo. If I had a larger turbo I will have more lag coming out of the corners.

This to me was the perfect combo in order to meet my goals on road corse and at the strip.

Love what your doing. Very nice.

I too though am poo pooing your idea about a body kit. Roll the fenders and stick 17/245's under it. With the right offset it will be a perfect fit with a muscular stance.

Also, if your going to roadrace the car a stroker motor would be the hot ticket to get more low rpm torque.

Good luck on the buildup.

e_miller81
10-10-2007, 10:23 AM
At some point I will be putting a stroker in but I've never tuned and I didn't want to do that with my first engine incase I blow it up. I will go to a stroker at somepoint. Its going to take me approx 3 years for the complete build.

???

I am confused why your lack of tuning dictates what type of displacement you will be building your motor for? Why would you be more afraid to blow up a built 2.3 stroker compared to a Built 2.0 (with very pricey parts)

Also, hate to say it, but in 3 years a lot of these parts will be outdated and old technology.

The reason I am tuning my 2.0 that is built is I got a hell of deal on it and it will take the power I want to throw on it while I learn to tune.

I understand about parts being outdated but the minute you buy it something better can come out. I don't think you can get a much nicer manifold than I have, I can't imagine something lighter than carbon fiber doors coming out. I can't imagine the technology of intercoolers will change that much in three years. The same gauges have been around for many years. Chromoly roll cages are the best in the business and I can't imagine that changing much. I don't see my 6 piston brakes becoming out dated, well I hope you get my point.

The only thing that I could think that could be upgraded in the next few years is the standalones and I haven't bought one yet.

Sad to hear about the body kit, but oh well. That's the way to "restore" a car before you mod. Start completely from scratch. Way to go!!!

Excellent work dude, i recommend with all those mods and injectors, you definitley need a dsm link!..

16G_tsi_awd
10-15-2007, 11:28 PM
Aluminum rods huh. Are they Groden's? You know aluminum rods are not made to last long. They stretch but if you rebuild alot than it's OK. That is a big list of nice parts but I don't see a tuning device...?

Then again you did not say you were done buying stuff.:)

e_miller81
10-16-2007, 08:41 AM
Yes they are Groden's. I will most likely be pulling those rods out before I run the car. It would not work with road racing and thats what this car will be doing along with drag racing. I am building this car for Nopi Turbo Street and SCCA X-Prepaired. I know my turbo is not big enough for the Turbo Street class.

I am about halfway done buying parts, I still have aways to go, I will be running an AEM EMS. I still have to buy Trans, EMS, o2 housing, Downpipe, Exhaust, Clutch, SMIM, Axles, Driveshaft, Strada dash along with many of little parts here and there.

Chicago_DSM
10-16-2007, 10:22 PM
I still don't understand why you think you NEED Aem Ems?

If you are worried about tuning, and are in fact building a whole motor just to use while you "learn to tune", why don't you just start with Dsmlink which will save you the headaches you will get from trying to figure out EMS on your own!

Oh, and you didn't list an exhaust manifold, but if this really is an unlimited budget build, I would recommend a Shearer Fab Equal Length Manifold! Oh and while your at it, get an AMS VSR intake manifold and DV/DT Fab Intercooler!

e_miller81
10-16-2007, 10:34 PM
I just received my Shearer Fab Equal Length Manifold. Ron is a great guy. I have my questions about AMS intake manifold, I'm not sure that would bring much more power than JMF's intake. I have not heard of DV/DT Intercoolers but I will look into it. I was thinking about Extreme Intercoolers. I've heard they are a great Quality.

I'm running an AEM EMS for multiple reasons. I know it will be harder to learn but I'm not stupid when it comes to tuneing I'm just not experienced. I've tuned with an AEM on my friends mr2. We are still not done and its a very slow process but I'm learning. I would of built a 2.3 first but I bought that kick ass motor right from the company for 3,000. The parts alone with no work done was 3,200. The guy lost 3,000 dollars on the transaction but needed to sell it.

I just spent 8 hours underneath the front and rear wheel wells today. I noticed that the sandblasting did not remove the sound barrier underneath there so I spent the day with a torch and a putty knife.

I'm taking the car in two weeks to have the roll cage installed and fuel cell done. I will also have the underneath, interior, wheel wells and roll cage painted at the same time. Once I get it back the true test will begin, seeing if I can put this car together.

Sorry that everyone is disappointed in the wide body but I think the car will look very aggressive with it.

I have a question about the drivetrain. I called Road Racing Engineer's today and had a talk with them about my setup. He told me he would go with a limited slip diff. for the front and center. The rear lsd he said was not needed. The rear end I have in my car as of now is not a LSD. Do you think I should stick with that setup or should I go with a LSD rear end? I think it would help in drag racing. Would it hurt me in road racing?

Thanks

When I do the roll cage, I will be incorporating braces to stiffen the body at the same time. I will be doing this for the front and rear of the car.

Why didn't you weld re-enforce all the suspension conpononents. Thats what we did with all of mine. Plus prothane bushings. My suspension is stiff as a rock. handels great. Next were dropping the car an inch and half.

I never really thought about that. I already powder coated the suspension and I was really happy with the handling that I had with my gst. I hope I don't regret not doing that. Thanks for the advice, I wish I would of done something before I spent all the money on the powder coating.

I picked this car up from a guy in Wisconsin. I don't know if its the same car you seen on ebay.

I am hoping I can have the car done for spring of 2010. This year I will be putting the engine and mocking everything up and installing the suspension and working on the interior. This winter I will be pulling the engine back out to finish the engine bay. In '09 I will reinstalling the engine and finish the wiring for the car and I will start to tune it a little. In the winter of '09 I will get the body completed. So I can start showing it off in 2010.

The ratio's are different. I think if you use an auto rear in a 5-speed, you'll burn up the rear. If you reverse it, and use a 5-speed rear on an auto trans, you'll burn the trans up...

I do have a question. I have a Slowboy Racing Intercooler right now. The size is 24x10x3.5 . It supports 800hp. Do you think I should sell it and get one that is a little smaller that fits my application better. Something like the Extreme Intercoolers Race Kit. That supports 675hp.

I was told that if you run a larger intercooler than you need you will cause lag in your spool up. Is this true?

Thanks

The Lag may be 1-200 rpms at most, the extra cooling of the bigger core far out weighs any increase in lag.

Those seats retail around 2,100 for one seat with out brackets. I purchased the driver and passenger seat. The carbon fiber seats are about 6lbs less than the fiberglass version and they look cool as hell.:D

We are almost done installing the roll cage. Its going to be certified up to 8.50
The car will never probably see that but the road racing required a lot of the same stuff so I went ahead and did the rest to certifie it. Notice around the headliner we curved the piping to follow the lines instead of just making it a straight pipe. The guys also cut out the back so we can start installing the fuel cell. I have to finish the cage install the fuel cell then we will start to paint the underneath then the inside.
It will be a couple of weeks before I have more pictures I'm guessing.

Those rear bars aren't good for much more than eye candy. You added an additional flex point rather than triangulating it and transfering load.

I guess I don't know what your talking about that rear bar is tied to both loops coming down. Then is connected to the strut tower bars. The bars coming coming down are tied to the center of the car and the strut tower braces.

If something needs to be changed please help.

Right, I see that. However, look at the following pics. Assume you have a load transferring through the shock tower in the two directions, shown on the left. This would equate to, via translation, loads at the joints shown on the right. If you move to the next stiffest point (green dot on the right) and fix that point, look at the loads at the blue dot. You have moments (or torques) and forces acting on the end of the bent tube. Rather than transfer the load via a triangulated joint, it's now inducing bending in the tube (circled in yellow).

Like I said before, sure it looks cool. I think it looks cool, but if you are shooting for a stiff setup, you don't have it. Besides the fact, how does it apply to the NHRA rules for cages? I'd question your functional tie in to the towers. Sure it's stiffer than stock, but not as stiff as it could be.

Just a Quick question...Whats your budget on this? any sponsors?

I do not have any sponsors and I really don't plan on taking on sponsors. I don't really have a budget but I'm trying to stay under 50k. The only large thing that I won't be able to do by myself is the body.(YES, I'm still doing the body kit!!! I think everyone will be very surpised the way it will look once I'm done with it.) At this point I'm over the 30k mark. That includes a lot of money saved from Horsepower Freaks as they have given me discounts since I'm done lots of business with them. I'm keeping a list of all items Ive bought and tracking the cost of the sell price of what was advertised at that time and the cost I paid for them. I am over 40k if I would have had to just pay the sell price that they had listed on the web. Horsepower Freaks do not sponsor cars but its as close to a sponsor I will get and for that I do mention there names to people.

I have thought more about the roll cage. I will be running a strut tower brace on the car in the rear and I think that will stiffen it enough so I don't have to add another bar from one tower to the next. I understand your point about adding the other two bars for the front of the strut brace to the cage coming down and I think that would make a difference but not enough for the classes I'm running this in. The SCAA X-prepaired class I'll be some what competive in but not enough to go out and win the event. X-prepaired are full out race cars and while this is close I'm going to have full interior from the back of the front seats foward. That will be enough difference to were I won't be able to challenge for a win in that class. Also if I don't think its stiff enough that is a point I could always add those two bars at a later time. I think it would look a lot cleaner with out those bars.

The cage will pass inspection for NHRA certified for 8.50's. The guy helping with the cage certifies cages. I would have to add a funny car cage in order to go up from there. With me wanting to drive it on the street a little, that is not something I wanted to deal with. If you look at the Turbo Street class for NOPI. 8.60's would be competitive. I would have to change my turbo setup along with a few other items, though if I wanted to race in turbo street.

Thanks for the advice about the cage and I do agree that adding a few more pipes would strengthen the car but for what I'm doing with it I should be ok.

K_Mans_TSI
03-01-2008, 10:11 PM
Not without plates on some of those mounts it won't pass NHRA.

XP is the new hottness I must admit. sux weld in cages aren't allowed in SM.

e_miller81
03-02-2008, 08:55 PM
Every spot that is welded to the body has the correct plate welded to it. Look at the pictures very close. Look at every point that the cage comes in contact with the body there is a plate. The only one that you can't see the plate on is the strut tower brace but there is one there. I will show you the certification sticker when I pay the fee to have it done.

Once again the guy helping me with the cage certifies cages for NHRA. He did the welding because I can't do that great on welds. You won't find a much nicer weld then whats on my car.:)

I need suggestions from people!

I started looking at the Intake ports on my engine and noticed that they are not ported as much as I thought. They are ported though some. I compared it to a 1G Head that has been ported and there is a big difference. I was going to use a 1G Magnus Intake but its not even close.

Do I pull the head and have it ported to match the 1G Magnus intake or should I buy a 2G Magnus or JMF and match it to my current head? How much will this effect me horsepower wise?

Thanks for the input.

e miller81,
I'm not cage expert but based on the one in our car (certified to 8.50), everything looks like it may pass except you need a bar going across the top of the windshield and I believe a horizontal bar above you. The only other possible issue is amount of plate around where the bar goes into it.

Honestly don't assume anything, or take advice from people on here that aren't very knowledgable on certifications, including myself! Get yourself an NHRA rulebook, and follow the guidelines for an 8.50 cage. They aren't terribly complicated. 25.5 and up is a different story, you can know what your doing and still screw up and fail certification.

Good job on everything so far and good luck in the future!

Eric Jones

Hey Im about 30 minutes from you. I cant believe that this kind of project is taking place in Elkhart, weird. But I definately think you need to step up the cams and turbo setup. You are going all out on everything else to run a 30r and fp2 cams? I have a 35r and crower 280s and will be daily driving my car. I think if I had the funds that you had, and did everything all out from scratch, I would go even bigger.

The car is setup to throw a bigger turbo and cams in there for drag racing. I will be road racing the car thats why I went with a smaller turbo and cams so I can have more torque and hp at a lower RPM band. If I decided to drag it more I can always bolt a bigger turbo on.

Lol I guess you have to have a giant turbo for your car to be a race car! You DO NOT need the biggest baddest set up to go fast! And Not all race cars have turbos! There is all motor hondas that go 9s, and not to mention v8s, I guess everyone out there thinks you need a 42R or bigger just to go 9's, Shep goes 7's no nitrous on a 42R, so it is a little bit over kill for anyone not planning on going low 9s. and faster and 800 plus WHP.

A race car can have 400whp, It dosent mean its not a fricking race car.

Busting this guys balls about every little thing is ridiculous, Let them dam guy build the car the way HE wants.

So i guess this isent a race car because it dosent have a 42R or bigger!
10.6s on a 14B,
9s on a 16G
But wait it aint no race car it dosent have a giant turbo :chair: Haa

I'm still working on getting the bolts since mcmasters said they couldn't help me out.
I just got back my sway bars and springs for my coilovers.

That looks good, keep up the good work yourself.

I am going to have my crossmembers stripped back down after I painted them to have them powder coated in my blue. They are going to color match my paint. I'm going to end up with $800 in just my crossmembers due to having to due them twice but the paint is chipping already and I haven't even installed them yet.

It cost that much just for just the powder. It was the cheapest I could find between a few companys since I needed it color matched.

I am getting the bolts from a few different companys. I got some from Gardner and Western and some from mmsacc stainless. Between the two companys I was able to get all of my bolts except for 6. I will probably have to have them custom made at a pretty penny.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to fine a machine shop with a CNC machine to make the bolts I'm wanting. Here is a list of the bolts I'm still needing to find or have made.

Quality: Stainless Steel 17-4
Size : M14
Thread Pitch: 1.5
Lenght: 65mm

Quality: Stainless Steel 17-4
Size : M12
Thread Pitch: 1.25
Lenght: 70mm
Quanity: 2

Quality: Stainless Steel 17-4
Size : M12
Thread Pitch: 1.25
Lenght: 40mm
Quanity: 2

I'm also looking for SS m14 1.5 lock nuts.

Unless the company makes bolts them self they will not carry these.
Any one knows of a shop that can make these for me for less than $50 per bolt let me know. I have a company local that will do them for about that price.

Thanks

With your budget you should be able to find someone to make you a half chassis/half tube setup thats appropriate for road racing. Really no pictures to update but I did work on the car this weekend. I organized the suspension under the car and gathered what bolts I have for it and starting seperating them.

I also found my wiring harness and got that out. I'm still unsure if I want to do all new wiring or just cut out what I don't need of the factory harness? any suggestions. I'm thinking I will just want to cut up the factory harness.

MuffinMan7580
10-27-2008, 08:47 PM
If you're still going with the AEM, I would suggest cutting the unnecessary wires out of the stock harness.

Are you still planning on going with the FP2 cams? I've always come to understand that the fp2's are more of a FWD cam.

e_miller81
10-28-2008, 08:07 AM
I will be running the FP2x cams. I will do more research down the road but for right now I want to get the car together then I can swap cams out down the road.

Where did you hear about the cams being more for a FWD. I know that you will sacrafice a little bottom in for top end power.

MuffinMan7580
10-28-2008, 09:20 PM
I know that you will sacrafice a little bottom in for top end power.
If you look between similar builds, with, for example, one with fp2's, and another with fp3's, you'll notice that the one with fp2's is not only going toward top end power, you're also losing a good bit of torque (less wheelspin for a FWD car). Now I know a lot of people will reply that the FP3's were designed for stroker motors, which is true, but I have a friend who has them in his 2.0, and they make peak power just fine (610 AWHP) and have more torque in a larger portion of the rev-range.

I don't personally know about the fp2x's, but, like you said, if you're not happy with them, you can always change them later on down the road.

I got GREAT news!!!!!

I have found a company that believes they can get me the bolts I need. The best part is I will be using TITANIUM BOLTS!!!!!!! It was actually less for me to go to titanium bolts instead of 17-4 stainless steel.

I should have them orded I'm hoping by tomorrow. Once I receive them I can put the suspension in and get it rolling around!:D

Part of the suspension will be the 17-4 stainless steel and the other part will be Titanium. I will give an update once I know for sure I bought them. Thanks to the guy that mentioned titanium bolts.

I was scared that they wouldn't hold up but after speaking to a company that said the Nascar teams use them and after contacting one of them to reasure what the bolt company said I'm good to go.

Following this closely as I am in the middle of one myself very similar. Actually almost the same without doing all new bolts and all that. I'll be using the AEM as well and am currently looking into all the things I can cut out of the harness and engine bay that wont be needed.

Are any of those supporting any suspension arms?

Titanium has the tendency to ''gall''. That's why they are coated or sleeved for metal to metal contact.

Coat them add some moly paste they are lighter but they aren't as strong or resistance as steel to galling..

Nascar and Sprint car constantly pull vehicles apart and replace things, you are going to be doing the same?

You should do the knuckle mod so you can run EVO Brembo brakes.

So are you going to keep a full interior? A/C? Powersteering? Radio etc...?

Please do... it really bothers me to see these cars with so much money into them, yet they have had the powersteering hacked out and the interior just covered in sheet metal. Stock look owns all!

Oh, and lets see an update : )

e_miller81
02-02-2009, 08:20 AM
I have a Wilwood 6 piston brake system that I'm using. I will be keeping a full interior up front. I'm not sure what I'm doing in the trunk area yet. I will not be running ac but I will have powersteering and a little nicer radio over stock. Nothing crazy. I was going to remove the heating system from the car but because of needing my windows possible defrosted I will be keeping that now.

I have the brackets up for my dash and the shifter in the car. I am helping my dad show his 58 Corvette in 2 weeks and we don't have that ready yet so it will be a couple of weeks before I have other pictures of an update.

Sebba
02-02-2009, 12:09 PM
Why not A/C? If you don't want the extra load on the engine then just remove the belt for it, but don't remove the system.

e_miller81
02-02-2009, 12:59 PM
The reason I decided not to use Ac is for clearance issues. I'm going to be running a 3"o2 with a 3" downpipe and that puts the downpipe really close to the Alt. I had trouble with the alt. sparking with the downpipe and shorting itself out. I'm moving the alt. were the AC unit was. Also your talking about 65lbs lighter car.

Tirado Custom Coatings will be putting a ceramic and powder coat on these parts. I wanted to post a before picture and an after picture. The Exhaust parts will be done in his Ceramic coat and the exhaust hangers and pedals will be done in a powder coat that looks like chrome. I should have the parts back in about 2 weeks from what he says. Should look good and look forward to showing off his great work.

Here is his information if you would like to get the parts done.

Just wanted to give an update. While I'm waiting for my parts back from Tirado Custom Coatings I decied to continue the work on the inside of the car. I am trying to get my Heater system working with my roll cage. I will have to modify the vents but I should be able to get it to work.

I just got a few pictures of my items that got ceramic coated by Tirado Custom Coatings. He does such quality work as you can see. If you need any powder coating or ceramic coating done he is the guy to do it. Carlos the owner is a great guy.
For his e-mail and info go to his sight tiradocustomcoatings.com

The coating on these is good for 2000 degrees.
ENJOY!
