This is the start of my build up of my 92 talon, im currently in the process of getting the car stripped down and doing the body work and getting it painted. So far i removed the rear spoiler and filled in the holes for that, and the antenna, and put a laser hatch on.. i want my car to be different so it will have a 1ga front end with 1gb tsi sideskirts and tail lights, with no spoiler at all.. and the rear bumper cover was cut at the bottom for a diff look, the car will be painted very dark gunmetal (almost black) i already have the paint... just gotta get all the body work done... will have more pics up soon..
i completly gutted except for the dash. and cut the rear floor out and replaced it with some aluminum sheet metal which will serve as my fuel cell firewall as the fuel cell will be mounted in the stock location...

thats a pretty good idea, i was thinking on just painting them black, because there all scratched up, but i think if i just scuff the aluminum you wont notice all the scratches, leather would be sweeeeet tho

Just curious to why you arn't building the block?, you wont even reach the potential of the T67 with stock rods. Just curious...

because i dont have the money right now, to build it up, so thats whats going in for now, i know i wont get the full potential of the t67, but you cant underestimate the 4g63, people make over 550awhp and 100s of passes on the stock block.. if they can do it so can i. im not looking for much more then that, ill be happy with 500awhp, that in a 2600lb car with slicks. is plenty for me.... if i had the money it would be a diff story, but i make due with what i have...

well my lower rad support, was all bent and jacked up, literally...so i decided to cut it out, and weld this 1" square tube in..
it also gives me lots of room for intercooler piping.. i just have to weld up brackets for the intercooler and radiator. please excuse the sloppy welds. its a non gas welder that welds like shit...

Ive also been getting the body work moving along. I got the whole back half of the car sanded and primed, the top layer of paint had to come off because, it was all chipping and flaking away (must have been a macco paint job) which really sucks because thats alot of extra work to do...
Here are some small parts ive been working on... the side skirts where primed with flexible urathane primer, you need this stuff for all the plastic pieces, it prevents them from flaking and cracking like they always do... you also need to add a flexible addative to the paint once its painted...
i still have the bumpers and other side skirts to sand down and prime...

See we are doing these type of mods to our race car projects. I would strongly suggest that if your DSM is your daily driver or sees alot of time on the street, that you leave the crash beams in. My car does see some street time and for that reason I have 2 sets of doors. One for the street and one for the track.

I should have went out and got new ones before i did anything. But oh well i got it done.
I still have to do some body work to the outside of the door, then put it back on the car, get the other fender on and lined up, and mount up the rest of the 1ga front end. fun fun NOT! I hate body work lol im sick of it!
Its ok thought, im almost done all the body work.

Im going to paint it at either my cousin's shop in his paint booth, or just have my buddy chuck do it. He dosent have a paint booth but turns out some very very nice paint jobs out of his garage. (He also has 25 years experience thought.)

So i finally finished mounting both light brackets, the driver side door, and fender. Still need to finish body work on pretty much the whole driver side of the car. I also need to line up the hood, headlight covers, the lower lights. I need to get a front bumper cover, and a fiber glass hood Then i will line it all up better.
But anyway here are some pics from today.

Yea i def need to get one, i have to wait thought, ive been so tight on money.:( I havent been able to get any parts lately, damn bills!
It looks like an awsome product!
How much weight do you think youve saved so far?
Let's see, ive been wanting to add some of the weights up.
1G Bumper Rear. 32lbs
1G Bumper Front. 35lbs
1G OEM Seats Front. 100lbs
1G Front Seat Belt Assembly. 30lbs
1G Rear Seat Belt Assemblies, Speakers and mounting plates. 18lbs
1G OEM Seats Rear Seats. 40lbs
Sound Material Inside Car. 25lbs
Spare Tire and Jack. 35lbs
Stereo. 10lbs
Stock tool bag and tools. 2lbs
Spare tire cover, privacy cover etc 20lbs
Cruise Control. 6lbs
Various Brackets Firewall brackets, Intake, air can, heat shields etc. 10lbs
Under car heat shields 5 lbs.
Center console 10 lbs.
Fuel tank -45 lbs plus 10 for cell = 35 lbs saved.
Aluminum sheet rear floor, save 15 lbs.
Plus 40 for both gutted doors. 40 lbs
That all equals. 468lbs saved so far.
Right now im around 2630lbs
THEN.
I will save 30lbs for gutted lexan hatch.
I will save 35lbs on fiber glass hood.
I will save 30lbs on light wheels.
That equals 95lbs saved
So im looking at around 2537 with out me in it.
Im sure there are a lot more things i left out, so this is all an estimate! Plus im going to have to add weight when i get the cage in. Plus 20lbs for my race bucket and seat brackets.
SO THERE IS MY ROUGH ESTIMATE. :D
Lol
Wow, now my brian hurts!

So i havent done much latly, my air compressor broke and dont want to sand the car by hand.
Im getting the rest of the primer and paint in the next week, i decided to go to a single stage instead of a base-clear, the paint dosent have to be 100% perfect but trust me its going to look really really good, Alot better the most cars out there! I cant wait to paint it.
Here is the color for the car, its pretty much black but with metallic in it, then the hood, roof, and hatch will go gloss black! Its gonna look awsome. Its going to be stealth as hell, black GTS Headlight covers, tail lights all blacked out, black wheels, almost everything in the engine bay will be black. I love it, cant wait till its done.

Sweet color, but skip on the GTS covers. They come off in car washes and look kind of tacky. Just spray tint the lights if you're going to do that, but I think clear all up front on a dark car will be nice too.

Thanks for the input, yea im really digging the color, cant wait to spray the car.:D And yea i might just spray tint the lights like i did my tails.
Spray tint is alot cheaper then the gts covers. I did want to be able to take the covers off when i want, but dont want them randomly falling off. Hmmm And clear looks good too, just wont go with the all dark theme im going for.
I do like how Garychois's car looks with them, looks like he riveted his in so they dont fall off.

Yea you are right, i looked at his site again and he mounted the covers directly to the bumper cover, with no lights beind the GTS covers at all.
Def check out his site updates! Crazy custom ford 8.8 rear end pics!
On my car i hacked the pop-up headlight assembly so i can just use the mounting points for the headlight covers and fix them in place, Im going to be using some small aftermarket headlamps in there place and have them shine threw the bottom light pieces, that is why i wanted the GTS covers so i can take them off at night so the headlights dont have to shine threw black, yet have them black during the day.

Well finally got all the paint.:D The color is amazing, its alot darker then i thought it was gonna be but i like it better!
Im going to be running a fiber glass pin on hood with 4 hood pins and i really wasent feeling the chrome, paper then scuff pads that came with my hood pins. So i got these bad boys! There anodized black scuff pads and are wayy thicker then the ones it came with. And are gonna look awsome and go with the all dark theme of the car.

And i fixed my air compressor, got a filter/water seperator, masking paper, masking tape, and also some painter plastic so i can mask the car and other stuff off.
All i need now is to buy my own spray gun, and getterrrdone!

By the way as you can see this is a BUDGET build, just to show you that it dosent always take the biggest badest set-up and the most money to build a beautiful, show like quality, Fast car, done tastefully.
It dosent always take the biggest wallet to build a nice, quick car.
Its not even about how fast your car is or how much HP you put out, Its the fact that you love cars and you enjoy building, fabbing, tuning, etc your own car. Its somthing you create, and you can look back when its all done and take pride in saying that you built that car from the ground up.

Its just really hard to get the orange peel and imperfections out, without going to far.

I blew the whole garage out with the air compressor including the walls then used plastic sheet and i covered everything, tool boxes, workbench, and one wall of the garage that has shelves. Then wet the floors real good, And had a badass fan blowing out all the overspray. When i sprayed the car and the engine bay there was little to no dust. There was quite a bit when i did the sideskirts, i guess i didnt clean it out enough. Oh well nothing wet sanding and buffing wont fix.

So to get my mind off the paint work I was adding up some more weights for parts removed/and added, and i will be looking at around 2400lbs!!! But thats with out the cage and me in it. Im going to guess the cage will be around 100 plus i only weigh like 140lbs. So that should put me right at my target weight of 2600lbs with me in it.:D The lighter the better!
The wheels im getting are 15x7 and 12lbs each and are replica rota wheels.(Drag17) For the price you cant beat it! Im going to paint them all gloss black. Here is a pic i photoshoped!
For tires im going to go with a 235/60/15 BFG drag radial. I wanted to go with the MT street radials but there heavy as hell!

I just did one whole side and the rear wheel last night, takes a few hours with a die grinder and heavy duty wire wheel.
Then, you can either paint them ( who doesn't like shiny wheel wells? ) or flat black them like the pro street build 2Gon this website.

Yea imagine how i feel doing all this work! I cant wait to see it in the sunlight! lol I have some teaser shots of the rear end!! And a pretty good shot in the sunlight.
I have a laser hatch with no holes. And as for the other holes on the body, (spoiler holes, antenna hole) I dented in the area around the holes and then bondoed over them. That way it gives the bondo a place to sit in, and turns out very nice without having to weld and risk warping.
Here are a few pics of the rear end buffed! Still have ALOT to do. ENJOY! :)

I also just ordered up my S&W 10-point mild steel cage.:D
Cant wait to start that project! Then once thats in i can get the interior painted.
I did the wiring on my car first but we pretty much have the same plans, I was gonna flat black my car with gloss black accents.

Hey great minds think alike! Are you going to do an S&W or have it bent up custom? I must say S&W is the way to go, 250$ for everything. Just cut to size and weld up.

Flat black with gloss accents will look bad ass. And on my wiring, i decided im scraping the entire interior harness, and going with a painless or summit universal 12-circuit harnesses. I dont feel like going threw the stock one and only using what i need seems like it would be real pain in the ass.

Yea man just cut up the stock assembly, bolt it in the normal way and weld or bolt in a support in the front to hold it down. And thats that.;)

This is going to be a big project for me. Im pretty good at welding, just never did a job this big. So if anyone out there wants to give me any tips or pointers that would be awesome! Like forming the plates to the floor, i guess a torch and a hammer will take care of that? When i weld it up i want to make the rear bars connect to a bar going across the strut towers. Well i got lots of work to do! Cant wait to start on it.
Also if anyone has a link to the NHRA rulebook let me know. The link i had no longer works.
Thanks!

Ah, you got the 10 point kit. Those front a-pillar bars are funky and run outside of the dash. Makes a little less room getting in and out, but it's doable.

Harbor freight has a cheap but good tubing notcher, you need a 1/2 drill and the orange metal hole saw bits from home depot.
Rule book states you cant grind down any welds, and I recently seen something that the plates needed tig welded to the floor?
Most NHRA techs will pass it if they are mig'd to the floor anyways.

Yea i thought they were pretty funky too. I like other style ones with one bend.:( But oh well. Ill have to see how it fits and with the dash.

I have heard that about the plates but i dont think it has to be that way on the NHRA rule book. Maybe other organizations require it. Hmm?
Ill have to check out that notcher, i might just use a grinder thought. Oh and i also cleaned up one of my wheel wells, it sucks on a 1g because after you get the stock undercoating and dirt off there is an extremly thick layer of seam seal all over the front wheel wells, this stuff wont even come off with a bad ass wire wheel. So i sprayed over it. Dosent look anywhere near as good as yours but, itll do.
Anyways..
I might have some problems forming the plates around the rear stut towers. And what about the spots where the floor is uneven. Anyone have any tips?
b00stedtalon2

I used a big ass hammer to shape the floor plates around parts that are uneven. You should be able to do the same thing for the strut towers with being able to make it look nice.

Did you heat it up with a torch at all? I might try that on the strut towers. I was also thinking on the main hoop about just putting a jack under the floor with a 2x4 and smashing the floor flat, then welding the plates.

That looks like the S&W Race Cars Cage that I got for my Talon. It would just be easier to fab your own A-Pillar bars. And it will be easier to get in and out. Remember, you have 20 seconds to get out of the car from shutting it down to getting out blindfolded to get your NHRA licence and the easier the better.

Air hammers can be your friend!
Oh, and the tubing notcher is like 40 bucks, it will save you an ass load of time and your pipes will be stronger once you weld them together, because you wont have hardly any gaps.
It also has degrees on it if you need to notch them in a particular degree...
The bad part about it is the hole saw bits are $70, but the have a lifetime warranty, so I'm on my second set.. haha.
On the wheel wells, trust me i was in them bad boys for awhile... my grinder hates me right now because of how thick that crap was...oh.. and why dont you have PICS??? haha

Yea im really not likeing the way they are. I mean the front crassbar would have to be run under the steering wheel and would be right there in the open outside the dash. And not to mention less room. I will probably just buy some pipe and have it bent up.
Here is a pic i found of a mustang with this style a-pillar bars. All the other S&W kits i have seen are one bend, but when i get one it ends up beings like this.

You use 2 for the rear bars to strut towers, 2 for the main hoop, then the side bars and dash curved bars share plates when they meet at floor.
edit: i think you will need 2 more plates now that I think about it for those diagonal supports.

So the diagnal bars dont need them? And can be welded to the floor? It didnt say anything in the rule book about them, but every cage i seen has them. I guess ill pick up some metal and cut some 6x6 plates for it.

When you're forming your plates forget all of that air hammering and torch heating junk. Just take a few measurements and pre bend everything. You'll be able to get everything close enough to the point where u can just stitch weld or tack and just hammer it flat...etc.
You'll be surprised how fast it goes together....you think yours is a big job? Try doing it all with straight lengths of DOM and a hydraulic tube bender. :P
I pretty much hated my life after tigging all the plates to the chasis. I need a torch with a thumb control like it's going outta style if I'm going to keep doing cages. If I can figure out how to post picturs I'll put a few up if you're interested.

Yea, as i said before im just using the flux core welder to tack everything up and going to use a good welder for the final welding.
Faster then 9.99 or 135mph
The car is only going to be a mid to low 10 second car, not even needing a full cage. But eventually the car will get faster threw the next few years, and theres no reason to upgrade twice. Yea i like them like that too. But i want everything all black, lol. I dunno ill have to see, they do look pretty bitchen. Maybe ill just use the smoke metalcast paint on it, so its like a black chrome kinda look.
-Also the hood is ordered, i just have to wait a few weeks for them to make it. And then make a 2 hour drive threw PA. to pick it up.
-And also i got them threw-dash a-pillar bars ordered from s&w as well as 2 more plates.

I was thinking about using those rims as well, I clicked on the add for them the other day. They have a really light set of rims I was thinking about using but, I dont know if I can trust those at 140mph.

There from Discount tire Direct. There actually pretty nice wheels, If you think about it, rotas are replicas as well and they hold up just fine. There honestly probably all made at the same plant, and then the companys put there names on them, like Rota, Drag, etc.
I believe the red talon on here "got60" is running them with no problems and trapping 140 plus. A few others as well.

I would recomend Franks custom fiber glass to everyone. Hes an awsome guy and builds some of the sickest cars. He had a full tube chasis VW jetta with like 24inch wide slicks, that he build. He build everything, the fiberglass shell, the full tube chasis, the sick ass intake and exhaust manifolds. He also had some sick hondas, as well as some old AMXs, gotta love the old muscle cars. All cars were tube chasis fiber glass shells all build by him. Also saw a 1g carbon fiber hood he build, it was veryyy nice.
The only problem he has is that shipping cost a fortune, and if you dont live driving distance its gonna cost some major dough. He has to ship freight.

Guess he's still working on that rwd project then? I remember seeing it there last August while picking up my hood before the shootout. How'd you like finding his place? Was he actually there when you showed up? :P (both times I have gone he wasn't and I had to wait)

Hood looks awesome. I can't wait to see what this beast does when you get it finished. It is so much like what my car is going to be in the near future that it is scary. Mine will be multi colored still though because I don't have the money to paint it or the skills to do it myself..

I know how you feel, I'm glad my wife love's DSM's, because she understands what I'm doing on my day's off.. haha... but.. lucky me I have 2 days off.
It's hard to come home from work and go into the garage and work more... but that's usually what I'm doing.

Im very picky with the way i want the car to look, everything is gonna be black, even the headlight covers, tail lights. I want everything black... lol. The only thing that wont be black are the hood pins.
I now decided that im going to paint the wheels flat black, and paint the lips gloss black. I think that will look bad ass. And diffrent.
