Without ripping my engine apart, How would I tell if I have a 6 or a 7 Bolt block?

Can't go by year, as I am unaware if the engine has been replaced.

Buying a new block.

Is it a turbo? if so you can tell by looking at the water return line if it goes into the block or if it goes into the t-stat housing

Well if you are buying a new block just go for the 6 bolt.

But I believe there are a few pics on VFAQ.com ofthe oil pan that you can use to determine what you have.

Actually they are only like that on 2g 7 bolt cars, 1g 7 bolts are EXACTLY the same at the 6 bolts as far as plumbing goes.

On a 6 bolt the bottom of the front cover/oil pump is flat where the oil pan meets up to it, on a 7 bolt, it protrudes downward and the pan curves down the same.

Sorry let me specify. I have a 92 Turbo 2wd laser that has a broken block. Its in one piece at the moment and need to tell if its 6 or 7. Will my 2wd tranny bolt to either or? I will be just buying a short block for it. Replacing piston, rods and the usual stuff.

Any dsm tranny will bolt to any dsm block.

Let us pretend I have a 7 and I want to go with a 6. What problems will I run into if any?

Correct. Like I said it doesnt really matter what block you have now just get a 6 bolt if you are planning on buying a new one. Then all you would need is a 6 bolt flywheel and those can be had for cheap.

6 bolt swaps into 1gs are much easier than into 2gs.
