View Full Version : Finally in the 11s

On Friday night some kid in a pool hall convinced me to try once more for that 11sec time slip, and after much convincing I agreed. My reluctance was due to the fact that the car seemed to have lost some power in the last two months, as well as it now boasts big clouds of smoke when I downshift after a hard run. A local shop, TAD, did a leak down test on the car and sure enough the 3rd and 4th cylinder showed leak down in the area of 34%.
My attempts at running 11s has left me with a string of 12.0 time slips, all of which came with problems of all sorts and shapes. You name it and I had it, vacuum leaks (12.03@114), popping of IC pipes (12.025@107), etc. Two weeks back I finally gave up and decided to retire the car for the winter mods, and now this ...
TurboMitsu and Adam showed up at my place at 10AM this morning (11/05/00). My wife in her GVR4, TurboMitsu in his 1G, Adam in his 1G GSX, and I headed out to Byron raceway for some fun in the sun ... and cold. My first pass for the day was as follows:
R/T 0.610
60' 1.825
330'
1/8 7.768
mph 94.50
1000' 10.073
1/4 12.002
mph 117.50
My wife told me that the red flashing lights came on for few seconds because my car was smoking so bad at the end of the track, they thought that I’d broken something. My second and final run as follows:
R/T 0.760
60' 1.713
330' 4.973
1/8 7.630
mph 93.64
1000' 9.943
1/4 11.879
mph 116.88
I cannot tell how excited I was. It’s been a long road to this ET. I know for a fact that the car would have gone quicker (the decrease in mph tells me so), but I decided to quit while I was ahead.
TurboMitsu busted some good times ... I’ll let him fill you guys in on it. Adam had problems and could not match his 12.4 from a couple of weeks back. My wife’s car went 13.88@97mph, so she was happy as well (hey, who said that pregnant woman could not race).
Anyway, a nice ending to difficult year of drag racing.

I cannot tell how excited I was.
I'll never forget the look on his face :D
:)Good Day! My STOCK jap spec engine did better than I thought, with only 2.5 exhaust, HKS intake and boost at 17psi and un-ported 14B I was able to 13.2 with only 97mph traps :D
I can't wait to get my 16G and FMIC installed!
It was a great day!
Hey Mike, what is different about the jap spec. engine as compared to our normal 4g63's? I assume you fixed your problem...what was it?

Great job, SAfrican! Persistence paid off. Now you can have a relaxing winter knowing that next year you'll be full of 11s timeslips. That's gotta be encouraging.

Nice job!! Congrats. Just curious which turbo you are running? I am going for 11s on a 16G. As if that wasn't enough, it's a 2G :) The 12.19 in my sig was the last time I was at the track, 4 months ago. Since then, I've added .020" over JEs, removed the balance shafts, went from 550 to 650 injectors, added a roll cage, etc. I think that I am going to finally replace my stock upper IC hose with a 2.5" replacement too. Anyway, nice job, I hope to be there with you soon.
If this damn rain ever stops, it might be this Wed. :)

Van, the difference between 1G 4G63 and Jap Spec 4g63:
Higher compression, and cyclone intake, and 510's injectors (on some) I blame the Cyclone intake for the good time with such slow trap time :)
The “missing WOT” problem was nothing more than my carelessness when changing my plugs – I didn’t change all of them! LOL I left one of BP6ES that came with the engine :D
The new plugs took care of the missing problem but the LED still acts wired… It’s strange – yesterday I’ve made so many passes on 17Psi of boost and the LED never blinked, then on the way home @12Psi it came on solid

TurboMitsu: what's the compression on the Jap engine and what's the difference between a Cyclone intake manifold and a US spec?
Hey Fast16g, I'm Ross too! :D

Hehe....your parents did it to you too, huh?! :D How fast is your All-Trac? I ran one at Moroso once and he was running mid 12s. Nice car.

Ross: I don't have much done to it so it's only in the 14's right now. Was this the 12 sec All-Trac you raced?

Thanks for the congrats. Fast16G, I have a 20G on the car. Spoke to Tym Switzer the other day and he said that that was the turbo that got him his 10sec timeslip. I've also seen quite a few people go into the 11s with 16G, so your quest is very do-able. Is your turbo clipped? You might want to get another 2 or 3 mph out of your car at the traps, 114mph will get you into the 11s with an awesome launch. Also, if you have on adjustable sprockets, that too might help get those extra mph that needed for solid 11sec passes ... all the luck to you.

All-Trac, the compression on Jap spec is 8.5-1 (which is as much as 2G's in US)The "Cyclone" intake has double runners for each cylinder, half of them close under vac, and open at boost, this gives your car great low-end and incredeble spool-up!
The spoolup between gears is so quick that my AWD squeels when going into 2nd :D

Ross-All-Trac,
That would be the very same one...hehe. Where did you get the pic from? Dynamic Turbo built it (or so Bert told me). Nice ride. If I remember right, he ended up winning the AWD Quick 8 that time. I was still at 13.0s. The DSM lined up next to him is Dave Hall. He was only running 12.8s-9s at the time (11s now). I believe the Celica's best pass that weekend was a 12.6?
SAfrican,
No problem. I know 11s is a feat, even on a 20G. If you could just bolt on a 20G and run 11s, the Times page would have more 11s than 12s :) Yes, there are a some 16Gs in the 11s (can't really say quite a few), but none are consistently in the 11s. I was keeping track (kind of lost it over the past few months), but there were only 15 or so 16G'd cars faster than me that I know of either on or off the Times list. A lot of those times are years old already. About half of those are still 12.0s. I am .6 away from the 16G record and am hoping to close the gap in the next few times to the track. I am not really sure what I will do after I run an 11 on the 16G. It obviously will not be enough to be there consistently. Maybe nitrous, maybe just a Garrett. Maybe I'll try for 10s on a 20G....hehe.
No cam gears as of yet nor do I have clipped turbine wheel. I am considering just installing an 8cm^2 housing and leaving the wheel alone. I still have a totally unmodded stock MAS and upper IC hose. So there ARE still things to work on (I think the turbine, MAS, and upper IC hose are my biggest issues right now).
I'll keep you posted if/when I ever make it there :) If the ET in my sig all of a sudden goes to 11.5 @ 120, I gave up and added nitrous or a larger turbo...hehe.

TurboMitsu: My intake is similar to that. It has TVIS (Toyota variable intake system) with 2 runners per cyl and 1 blocked off like yours, but they open at 4300 rpm instead of when boost starts. Kinda gets in the way of boost below 4300 but I guess it does help the low end.
Fast16G: A friend of mine sent it to me. I don't know where he got it. Those wheels look like they're 18" or 19"... friggin huge either way. I bet he could run 11's with some smaller and lighter ones. :)

I think they are 18s and it's lowered of course. I just noticed looking at the pic that he's not wearing a helmet. Moroso officials are always right on top of things ;)

Hey man congrats! Great to see another DSMtalker make it to the magical land of 11's! :D To do it on your last run of the season is really sweet. Especially after you have been so damn close.
And Mike... that is DAMN nice on your new engine, congrats on getting that all together, you should be getting some real nice slips in the future.
BTW - Thanks for posting that url Sal... that thread should answer most questions about pic posting.
