Had an idea the other day! I started this project and i'm not sure where it's going but i'd like a little feedback if you could provide it to me!
I have a 1G talon ES
Here it is. I have a touchpad mouse that I have placed where the ashtray goes and I just ordered a 5" LCD monitor to put into my double din opening. The catch is is that the head unit is mounted where those middle vents go and the lcd monitor will connect to a full computer running Windows 98, with DVD and MP3 support which will be thrown out to my car amps, completely independent of the head unit, that's why the mouse is up front. keyboard will be wireless and will be stowed away for safety while driving. What you guys think?

coooooool. . . .
Where's the computer gonna be?
Those suckers are big and heavy.
That'll be one badass setup when completed.
I'm sure you realize how complicated it'll be.
Can a computer take the kind of abuse and vibration a car sees?
Good luck dude.
Are you gonna use this to run the datalogger for performance gains?
Just wondering...

Well, yeah it is cheaper... for me anyways. The MP3 players in dash (NOT the ones that play cdrs but the ones with actual hard drives) are too close to $1000 for me, so i figure why not just put a full computer in for the same price that does more!, i'm gonna sit the computer behind the driver's seat on the floor and make a custom plexi glass box for it and it'll be cooled by fans impregnated into the box. Yeah, i'm gonna run a datalogger off of it, as well as mp3's, Hotsync cradle for my palm, gps and anything else that you can do with a computer, i will use a laptop and a cat5 network connection to upload mp3s to the computer via a network plug installed into the center console. it's pimp i'll put up pics when i get some of the install.

sounds kewl... you gotta keep me posted ... i was referring to the kenwwod excelon z919 but it doesnt have a hard drive and its $650... if you get a big enough hard drvie you can store tons of cds on it then you can listen to anything you want ... use real jukebox plus to play the cds if you store them on your pc easy acces of songs and you can make some kewl playlists for when your crusing around .... just my opnion..

i hope that before you mount that computer into your car that you realize that computers aren't made to take a lot of vibration. in fact all the vibration from ur car will actuall ruin the hard drive (and who knows what else) within a few months (extremely best case scenario). a lap top would be better off than a regular pc but even laptops aren't made the take that much vibration as a car will put out.

yeah, im working on some rubber shock mounts to allow movement of the Hard drive mount. I got a 4GB for the OS and progrmas and a 30gb hard drive for MP3's, I just ordered a 5" monitor yesterday for it. anyone know a good video output card i could use? i need a rca video output on my computer to run it to the monitor. any thoughts?

Hard drives are VERY sensitive. The computer will be fully opterational as long as you don't drive your car while its on. As fast as the hard drive spins, one little bump and you've lost everything. You're going to need a lot of damper on the drive. Use and external drive and put it in a bowl of jello... perferably cherry flavored.

I am going to have to go with everyone else and say that yea basically a hd that gets bumped is bad news. Heads hit the sectors and you lose as many sectors as it hits (new drives lose more because they spin faster). Possibilites, a nice HPC/Labtop i think the IBM z50?! the one that is basically a handheld on steriods. Otherwise labtop drives are less suseptable to shop and therefore may work better for you. laptop on foam and as long as your suspension isnt extrememly firm then your good. Hmm, well if you still go with the desktop go with the voodoo 3 with the video out. Its a nice card, plays well with just about everything, easily runs everything you will need it to, and is definetly less then $100. let me know it goes, as i may be doing the same with my car come winter....

I would go with the ATI All-In-Wonder 128. It's an awesome card. It has a TV tuner built in as well as an MPEG 2 encoder for encoding your Video into MPEG files. It has Video IN and Video Out in both composite and S-Video formats.
