Thought I had the deal of a lifetime. I find an Evolution at Highland motor sports in lowell Mass with 36,000 original miles...its a 2003 red. Has some mods done to it. Appear to be all just small ones..dual bov, air intake etc...but the son of a B overheats on idle if she sits after I just had driven her. Coolant level has dropped twice and had to refill, but have found no leaks....but sit and idle and run the AC and forget it the temp gauge is going to tach out! I just bought it two weeks ago....sucky...I keep thinking if its cosuming coolant could be the headgasket..but on a car with so low miles that is hard to believe without a compression test. Lucky me at school I have none of my tools. I was told just to bring it to a Mitsu dealership and get it documented if there is something major wrong with it cause i still have 2000miles on the warranty from the dealer I bought it from. Still its depressing..traded in my gsx I worked so hard on..lets hope it isnt something bad..like if the guy who owned it before gave it a hot supper everyday of its early life! That would suck worse! lol. :(

You didn't test drive before you bought?

I did and it seem to run like a top, but it never heated up. I live about 300 miles from where I bought it. Didnt notice it heating up til I was almost home. So I checked the coolant and it was low. Filled it and then three days later after I drive about 300 more miles I stop when I come home shut it off and let the turbo timer run til the car shuts off and my temp gauge its almost to its max temp. So I pop the hood after a bit...coolant looks down again and the overflow is full to the rim like it was overheating. I can smell the coolant too. No vapors out the tail pipe tho..that is a good sign.

Sucks to hear of the problems. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

How much did you pay for the EVO?

Its not coming out of the tail pipe because its shooting it out of the back of the block when the head lifts off under boost. Well at least that's how it WAS happening until it finally fragged the head gasket.
I, put head studs in as soon as I got the coolant whiff crap after a pull and it stopped.
You need a cossie gasket and studs, possibly a resurface on the head too. And it will be fine.
Use an OEM or cosworth gasket.
Everyone said the stock studs on the evo were soooo much better. Not true. Couple of hard pulls over 25psi and they stretched just like they all do.

Should have bought my Evo ;).
Sorry to hear about your situation. Once you get this all sorted out, you are in for a treat. They are amazing cars to drive.

I have 2 friends with evo's that had overheating issues... both of them replaced the water pump multiple times to no avail. The fix for them was to put a new HG on.
Fix it and enjoy the car. I love my evo!!

Bought your EVO Alex?
My evo is always for sale :).
At least it is in the realm of fixable. Whenever something breaking mechanically and it frustrates me, I always remind myself it could be worse. It's could be some crazy frame damage where your car never feels straight again.
don't sweat it, I miss my GSX but I love my Evo.
