Day 1: Deconstruction

My mood: overwhelmed but excited.

My wife's mood: supportive and excited.

So, here we are, the beginning. You guys asked for it, so here it is.( Actually I think only two of you asked.) Hopefully Ill be updating often, but I don't plan on rushing myself with the build. I hope I keep this entertaining and a good read. If it isn't oh well, go stick your head in a toilet.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi011.jpg

The first thing I did today was just look over the car good, and all the included parts. It was dark when I picked the car up and I missed some key issues. First there's a pretty large dent in the floor. When I get the rest of the interior out I will get some pics of it. The spoiler is a different color, but that can be repainted. And there's a large crack in the dash.

First thing I wanted to do was get out the engine harness.Sometime in the past someone thought it would be a good idea to cut all the wires at the ecu plugs and resplice them. Why? Im not sure, maybe someone thought if they rewired the car it would be more race car like. Or it would time travel. I looked but didn't see a flux compassider or Mr. Fusion.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi001.jpg

The car is a 90. So since the harness has to come out and most of the ignition isnt here (I do have the coil though), Im just going to do a full conversion to a 91 ignition. Every thing has a splice in it or is hacked in one way.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi008.jpg
(The data port)

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi002.jpg
(Injector harness cut, presumably done for my amusement by previous owner)

After we got the harness out I wanted to get the engine and transmission out. First thing the transfer case.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi025.jpg

That appears to be the only thing on the car without noticeable damage. The same cannot be said for the transmission....

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi028.jpg

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi027.jpg

Or the block....(which I didn't take a picture of for some reason and I thought I did. The ear for the transmission bolt hole on the front of the block is broken. Use your imagination.)

After some struggle and cursing the trans finally gave. And guess what I see, A shiny new pressure plate.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi026.jpg

So of course I pull off the plate and find.....

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi032.jpg

...a what appears to be almost brand new Competition Clutch six puck disc....

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi030.jpg

There is a cubix zirconium in the middle of this diamond.

Next up, the block. The head was already off and in the trunk, so dropping that was easy. (I also forgot to mention that it has prothyene mounts all around. And that makes me happy.)

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi034.jpg
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi035.jpg

All we had to do is loosen the front and rear mount and drop it out. Jack up the car some more, and drag it out...

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi037.jpg

And now the engine bay is read to be cleaned and have everything that needs to be replaced, replaced.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi039.jpg

The car has pretty new axles. SO that's less money I have spend

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi040.jpg

It also has a stainless braided clutch line.

The guy included a second gen manifold already welded for an external gate and pyro sensor. As well with a custom one off catch can.....

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi019.jpg
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi022.jpg

I'm not even going to mention the 14b...I think it was buried in the ground for a little while.

Right off the bat I need a 91 engine harness and ignition parts and ecu. I'm really undecided on what to do with the motor. What route to take if you will. When I first decided to take on another DSM, I wanted stock internals, and big 16g with supporting mods setup. Now I have dreams of high 11's, low 12's with full interior and A/C. Any input would be much appreciated.

I'm almost really overwhelmed with how much I need to do. And being really undecided on the engine right now isn't helping. But I guess I'm going after the interior next, while I figure out my engine plan.

So I'm really in a self battle with myself. My goal is high 11's low 12's with full interior, A/C, and PS. I'm afraid of the bottom end that came out of that car.

So Ive been debating on three choices.

Build the block I have with forged internals, Mahle and Groden or Arias probably.

Buy a FFWD or JNZ shortblock.

Or find a used complete motor, and hope that lasts while I do the first option.

I'm real hesitant to deal with my local machine shop on another engine build so that's why I'm steering myself away from option one.

Option 2 is going to do put a dent in my budget and possibly take away from my other ideas for the car monetarily speaking.

Third option probably isn't going to like a 30r.

This weekend I will probably start taking out the interior for a thorough cleaning and reassembly to as close to factory conditions. And pull the case off of the transmission. So pics of that mess when I get to it.

Nice, keep this thread updated. I am still looking for my next DSM. I would like one pushing about 250 hp for a DD. Shouldnt be too hard right? :dunno:

brokeawd

Thanks, I plan on keeping it updated till its done. Which will probably be never.

I wont own another dd dsm, or toy for that matter. I had to many issues last time which ran into not having a car alot of the time, and rushing things and doing stuff half ass to get my car on the road so I could drive to work. I have a DD Civic with a drop, rims, and a few JDM odds and ends cause I might be a little on the homosexual side.

Well, I have another car too. I am just still paying it off and hope to be done with the payments by around tax income time.

Only "mods" on my 04 Sunfire are drop in K&N filter, Sony Xplods 6 X 9's in the back, and two awesome stickers that give it a gabillion hp, it says ecotec forum.com on them. :P Future mods are Dynamat, Pioneer 4X 6's, sub and amp. Thinking about adding in a supercharger if I can find one for cheap but I just want to get this car paid off first. Being 17 and stuck with car payments suck. :(

What are the plans for this bad boy?

Part 2:

So it's time to tackle the interior. I wanted to take out what was left in the car and clean it and replace what is broken or to messed up to meet my standards.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi005.jpg

Started with the seats. After I pulled them out ( which was really fun on the passangers side since I couldnt open the pass door.) I could see really how dirty the carpet was.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi049.jpg

Yanked out the back seats and pulled out the carpets.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi061.jpg

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi062.jpg

You could eat off it.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi052.jpg

My cat helped.

Sunday I went and got some random pieces at the pull a part, cleaned them really good. Some random cleaner first, then Armorall after.

And basically that was the scene since Sunday. I'm being super anal, so much in fact that the piece around the lighter, the black ring. Mine had a little rust, so I took it and sandblasted it and re painted it. Every trim piece has been pulled apart or off and cleaned completely.

Im going to rent a steam cleaner probably this weekend and do my upholstery and carpet this weekend.

I also had the chronic dash peel.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi072.jpg

So what I did was went to Pep boys and got some spray upholstery glue and some clamps from Lowes.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi074.jpg

I sprayed the glue on the exposed portions of the trim, and set my clamps.

http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi075.jpg

Its looks like it will work kind of decent.

So the fun stuff should start happening soon. I think I have settled on the motor which is probably going to be the used longblock. Just so I can concentrate on other things for now and build a motor in about 6 months-year.

So hopefully no more boring stuff.

Looks like your previous owner mods are going to take awhile to clean up, your doing the right thing by removing Everything that the previous owner touched and replacing it.
Your saving yourself a lot of future headaches by addressing the hacked up wire harness now!
Good luck, And I hope your wife stays supportive :)

Wow, you have a long way to go still. You'll enjoy it. Take your time and fix every little thing you can, because once you have it running you don't want to take off anything again to fix it.

Success with the build

I had a project car that had carpet in the same condition as yours. I pulled it out and took it to the carwash and washed from one end to the other being careful not to get too close with the wand and hung it up to dry and it came out like new. Couldn't even find a spot. You might let it soak in carpet cleaner before you wash it.

Just an FYI if you plan on re-using it

Thanks everyone.

I forgot to mention how hacked up the speaker wires are. Ill pic it tomorow. But it will be fun. Its like all of this stuff is hidden.

But that is going to be half of the fun.

A 50 year old car at the bottom of the gulf of mexico has less rust than my gas tank. Forgot to mention that as well.

I completely missed this post...

I may try that. I'm planning on getting a rug doctor or something to do it with cause I want to do all the upholstery. And my other cars as well while I have the thing. But if it doesn't get it as clean as I want then I will try that after.

I plan on going broke doing this. Thanks for the support.

And frank, watch that mood go down once I start really spending money.

Was the car free? Seems like an awful lot of work. But it looks like you're headed in the right direction, keep up the work.

Good luck with the build, man. Louisiana car? If so, I'd imagine it's pretty rust free (?). If so, you at least have a good solid canvas on which to work.

My advice: take your time with the build, as much time as it takes for you to do exactly what you want to do (you'll thank yourself later).

When I Put my car together, it started out much the same as your car. Over the course of 2 or so years, I spent countless hours cleaning, replacing, and repairing just about everything. Although my car is right now mostly stock, I at least have a solid, fully servicable car ready for mods (when money and time permit). I never plan on selling it, so I'm in no real hurry.

Good build thread so far. Keep it going!

No it wasn't. But it was cheap.

And it is a lot of work, but as long as I stay busy it will get done eventually.

Where have you been hiding? IFO tomorrow at State Capitol.

Im going as fast as I think I can allow myself. Over the last two weeks Ive just been cleaning up stuff and painting little odds and ends. I had to work last weekend so there was no major work then. Going to start ordering stuff here real soon. Motor, turbo, etc, etc, etc,.......

But for now, i just got back from Lowes with a rug doctor. Im going to give my interior a shot at cleaning it myself. Hopefully this wont be fail. So a real update soon.

Minor update. No pics right now nothing really to see.:

Cleaned all the carpet and seats. I wasn't to happy with the results. I got the nitty gritty stuff out but alot of it is just worn in 20 year old dirt. After 6 hours of cleaning with a Rug Dr., presoaking with carpet cleaner, it didnt really clean much. So Im on the hunt for a new lower back seat, and possibly a carpet. I also realized I bought the wrong center console trim at pull a part ( I wasnt aware they are different) so Ill be heading over there this weekend.

But the good news. I got some fun stuff on the way! Ill let you guys in on that when it gets here.

Major update very soon. With *gasp* PIC'S.

Well here it is, another mediocre and lackluster update-.

My mood: Still happy, but slightly bored with repetitiveness.
Wifes mood : Still happyish, but saw a fluctuation in those levels last week after some big spending happened. Sex is still a go.

So here we are another installment of brokeawd's nail biting, edge of the seat thriller build diary.

Right now I'm doing as much free stuff as possible, for the most part. After cleaning the seats and stuff, I got inside the car with some 409 and scrubbed the bare metal clean. I don't want my car smelling like a bathroom in a crack house. And I'm a little anal about things sometimes. Ive been painting random things on the car also. Anything I can get away with rattlecanning I am. Small brackets and stuff. Nothing major. Like the screws that hold the scuff plate. They were all oxidized and ugly, and we cant have that inside the car, so I screwed them into a 2x4 and sprayed them with semi-gloss.

So Ive been sourcing out all the pieces that don't meet my standards clean wise, or condition wise. Ive made about three or four trips since Ive started the project. Saturday I went again and scored a center peice for the steering wheel, the eagle emblems on the scuff panel, ANOTHER center panel, and a shifter assembly. All for 27 bucks.

So I basically have only cleaned that stuff and finalized it to be put in the car. I found some new carpet for a decent price but am worried about the color matching. If I could make up my mind about that then I would start putting the interior back in. That and the back seat.

I also kind of started stripping the engine bay completely for paint. The bay and car will get painted at different times cause Im lazy and don't feel like moving the car with no engine to get the whole thing painted, that and Im pretty sure Im going to paint the whole thing later on in life.

Now on to the stupid pictures...

Final center console.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi155.jpg

Interior trim and such cleaned and minted up.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi156.jpg

Front seat after cleaning, yea tell me about it.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi157.jpg

Old scuff panel, new scuff panel.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi164.jpg

Old screw's.....
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi165.jpg

....Brand new screw's.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr343/brokeawd/TSi166.jpg

So my plan is to have the bay ready to be sprayed by next weekend. I'm back at work this up coming one but will hopefully get something done.

And some goodies are on the way, so watch out for that.

They put us back on 12 hours at work. So I havent been really having time to get on here, let alone work on the dizzum. All of that and Call of Duty World at war came out this week, so that doesnt help.

But I do have somthing to report.

(Not actual turbo shown bitches!)

FP3052, Tial 44mm wastegate, and EvoIII manifold.

More stuff is coming and will be here soon, and I plan on completely striping the engine bay Sunday for paint. Just bear with me folks. Only so many cleaned this, cleaned that, painted this part post's should be made.

Don't hurt the Panda's they are endangered or something. lol. You're car is looking good man. Simple cleaning is all it takes really. Hell I'm even looking at the same turbo come spring. I'll also suggest since you're so deep is to pull out the fan and check in side before the a/c exchanger. If the car has been sitting it may have mice, I had them in there along with the unibody under each of the front fenders. My car also had a few water leaks so thats why I ditched the carpet and made my own. Take your time, make a plan and stick to it. I would suggest cleaning everything up like you're doing and replacing anything that needs it. Then build your engine. It's a lot easier to bolt a turbo on later.
Good luck man.

So, I thought some sort of update was needed here.

As many of you may know, my life kind of took and bad turn a couple of months ago. Suddenly working on this car seemed like the least important thing to me. I had been separated from the car for a while and just hadn't been able to touch it, nor really wanted to if I could have.

Ive spent some time trying to enjoy my life (which I have), kind of went wild, and just stoped thinking about the car. I started thinking about buying another one done and ready to go. Im not sure what Im going to do at this point but I think Im going to keep going at it on this one.

I move into my new place next week and the car will be there very shortly after. So im thinking thats going to kick start me back into it.

So before long I should be updating this all again. With actual car related stuff. Not just my lame ass ramblings about how my life sucks.
