View Full Version : My late 2008-2009 build and write-up

As some of you may have known in 2008 I set a goal to run 9's full weight with all luxuries and I did just that (as seen in sig). Well as we all know the next goal is set higher so plans for this coming 2009 year my goals are low 9's hopefully 9.30's-9.40's and still retain A/C. After last season of turning the motor 9500+ rpms I decided to tear it down and check it out. To my surprise everything looked very good, however I noticed the rod bearings were wearing fairly quick since I was using the Eagle/Ross combo so I decided I would change things up a bit. I will start off with the new shortblock pics and info. Bare with me whereas I work on the road alot, but will keep this thread updated.
The purpose for this write up is to specifically talk about the parts used in my build. There are alot of people interested in the aluminum rod motors as well as the Wiseco 1400HD pistons. Plus its winter time and we all love pics!!
First I will post pics then I will list my specs/clearences. **These are what I felt were correct to use after obtaining the best info I could get USE AT YOUR OWN RISK**

All work was done at www.pattersonracing.com this is the first import they have ran through their shop, however the machinst in the back Mike knows 4g63's very well. They are no joke when it comes to making power!! Darren answered every call and called when he promised he would. Could not ask for any better professionalism.
Thanks for looking,

I was tired of looking a the parachute cable and nitrous line so I decided to make a 2 piece lightweight cover. The lower supports are a piece of 2x4 screwed to the factory spare tire cover rail and the nut in the middle is obviously the spare tire hold-down wingnut. It took me a couple hours to make this since I had the factory wood pieces to trace around.
What do you think?

My car still has a/c, etc and I drive it alot on the weekends so I did what I considered to be a minor weight reduction. I already had the poly seats so I threw them in.
1. Poly race seats 10 lbs each
2. Rear seat delete
3. Rear wiper delete ( getting vinyl to cover spoiler hole)
4. I put on a VIS carbon fiber hood today (will post pics when car is clean)

Well, the machine shop build 1400-1800hp comp eliminator motors running 14-17.1:1 compression and they said this is what they run as well as the Felpro MLS. I will try it I guess.

Skipped a few steps but wanted to do a update. I am going to order a JMF topmount monday whereas this manifold is off a EVO and it wont allow the waterpipe to be used and is too close to the driverside so a downpipe is impossible.

You COULD weld a fitting on the waterpipe, and run a 90 deg. fitting off that to bring the line down, and jsut run braided lines to the radiator..that would be cheaper..

After inspecting the head we found the exhaust valves warped. There is nothing wrong with the S.S. valves on the intake side so we re-ground them and the seats and I put in Supertech inconel valves on the exhaust side.

Yeah I know but the downpipe is the main issue. Even with the forward facing filter its impossible for a downpipe. Thanks though!
BostinSwifty38
12-26-2008, 11:39 PM
hmm....and why don't you run the turbo facing the other way, with the comp cover clocked towards the front, and run a 90 deg elbow pointed down? then there's roon for hte exhaust..

The pipe by the exhaust housing is the whole problem. I will look closer when I get back in town tomorrow evening but I am sure there is no way around it without cutting up the manifold and its not mine.
Thanks for your input.

Good work, man !!! Glad, that you were able to prove that even 1G full interior car can run 9's with AC and everything...
A lot of people thought, that was EVO territory only... Besides the fact, that you are 3300 lbs. , your time and MPH is really good for that weight and HP figure...
Good luck.

Did you think about turning the turbo around? It might make it easier to run the downpipe since the altenator is going to be in the stock location. I know the late Wess Hess manifold was like that.
1slow93turbo
01-01-2009, 11:56 AM
It wouldn't turn around since the #2 is close to the exhaust housing. Also the flange is tilted very far in toward the tubes. Trust me as I said before if I could make it work for the price difference of a new manifold, I would keep it.

Got this push/pull staging brake from Chad at Modified By KC. It was in one of their old civics. I will be setting it up as a pull type. Going to get the hoses made this week.
DOES ANYONE KNOW THAT THE THREAD PITCH IS ON THE PROPORTIONING VALVE AND MASTER CYLINDER? (The line from the lower left on prop. valve that goes to the front port of master cyl.)
Also should be expecting the JMF topmount this week!!

Looky what showed up!! JMF did a nice job on the manifold. I am going to have to pipe off the wastegate flange closest to the alternator and relocate the wastegate somewhere else since I have a/c and need the alternator up front. I also had to move the passenger side electric fan in front of the condensor and will have to get another 10" fan to mountas a puller by the alternator. So one fan is in front of the radiator as a pusher and one is a puller.

Hit it hard for half of yesterday and all day today. I will be ordering the 2nd wastegate tomorrow and picking up the j-bends to finish up the driverside wastegate relocation and both dump tubes. The downpipe is a 2 piece design and splits just below the alternator. I was actually surprised how much room there was for the 3" downpipe and the relocation pipe. I will be placing the driverside wastegate next to the front motor mount angled up towards the flange. As for the exhaust its done!
I should have it together and running by Thursday could've been sooner but going out of town a couple days for work.

Thank you very much! I have came along way in the DSM world in just 2 years. Took alot of reading and alot of questions, then sorting through the data deciding whats right. When I first got serious on the forums a couple years ago I was called a "newb" and when I said I wanted to run 9's I was in a round about way laughed at, but I knew time would tell. I used that to drive me and thats why I build cars simply for myself and my personal goals. This year I am shooting for consistant low 9's.

Finally got it on the rollers today and I must say I am very pleased. I knew when it made the same power as last year with 13 psi less and no nitrous it would be a good day, but its even better now that I can ditch the $13/gal Q16 and run the $1.71 E85. I will re-boost leak test it soon and see if we cant get a little more out of it.

Thanks Chris! I might get a little more agressive with the E85 but you know me, I am conservative. This will be by "DD" tune and for now I would like to play with E85 and get a better feel for it. Probably try to get it in the 9's with no nitrous whereas it should. I also put the stock front seats back in so it will be ~3250 lbs this season.

Im jealous. Maybe not with the lag so much, but I'm jealous.

Definately laggy, but that 400hp jump from 6000rpm to 8000rpm is just crazy.
I want to see a run with a spool up shot added

Your car has no power under 5500rpms LOL
Nice numbers, and cool that you are running the fuel system out that far with e85.
If you were all gutted out like everyone else whos in the 9s I dont see why you wouldnt be close to knocking on 8's door !!!
Nice build!

It will never be finished ha ha. I've been working out of town and also fixing a few things on the car and if the weather is nice this weekend I will take some more pics.

I plan on putting in race gas and turning the boost up to 45 psi and spraying it too. It might go high 8's then but it will be hard on stuff. I actually put the stock seats back in because I like the feel of them. I am going to try to get it on the scales again this weekend.
Thanks!

What was your old turbo you ran 989 on?

Turbonetics T72 p-trim .96 a/r, 38-39 psi 50-60 shot. This new engine made 684 @ 30 psi and the old one made 550 @ 30 psi. I am playing with the wastegates now since all I can get with the twin 38's and 21 psi springs is 37 psi. I have the springs to make them 23.5 psi base but I want to try something before I put the stiffer springs in.

Cant wait to see the car in action. Update us on the wastegate issue. Its weird twin gates arent handling the boost.

Weather is suppose to get nicer by Thursday so hopefully I can finish a few things and clean it up a bit. For the mean time I came across another wheel setup!!
Got these locally from a friend. For those of you who do not know these are the FD RX7 wheels powercoated black. The tires are new Mickey Thompson 255/50/16 drag radials.
I might sell the other drag setup which consists of Hoosier QTP's 26/9.5/16 on RSL wheels if I decide to run these.
