View Full Version : Just got an Evo for a STEAL! :)

I picked this car up salvage for 7k, its an 03 with HIDs and 39k miles. You can see the damage in the pictures and its not bad at all. It also needs a mirror, new hid bulb, tail light bulb, and maybe a new intercooler. So do we think I got a good deal or what? Its already titled and on the road. Oh yeah and it's all stock.

Nice pickup.

That's a good pickup, nothing majorly effed, just a bunch of small stuff. I've seen worse cars for sale with clean titles, often.
I've thought about pickin' up a salvaged car, more specifically a theft recovery that the interior is gone to hell and just throw some race seats and autometer gauges in.
This gives me motivation.

Rebuilt titles are often the way to go. :)
hudsonhawk
01-20-2009, 01:07 PM
Well they both have advantages.
Sti: nice guages, liquid filled rear view mirror, completely reliable boxter motor, beautiful transmission, brembo color is nicer, drive-by-wire (no throttle cable)
Evo: Fast for cheap, handles better in the snow, a lot more room inside, I like the black interior vs. teenager blue, the seats are WAY more comfortable, bigger trunk, WAY easier to work on...may I say spark plugs for instance, I think the interior is also easier to work on as far as radio's, guages, etc..
They both have some shared nice features like HIDs with levelers, nice steering wheels, nicely shaped center consoles.
Some drawbacks:
Sti: Interior is uncomfortable driving more than an hour, and the exhaust pitch will give you a headache, don't handle very well in the snow compared to the evo, VERY hard to work on and get at certain pieces, parts are more expensive for the most part because of brand names, etc.
Evo: Like I said HVAC controls suck, the 03s have transfer case issues and both of my evo's whine in 1st & 2nd gear, etc.
However the only thing that really bugs me about the evo is that the damn HVAC controls use a cable instead of being electric to change from hot to cold, and if they bend at all you can't change from hot to cold without reaching under the dash and moving the gear by hand (ANNOYING)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the bright blue int. on the sti. We'll see.

I wasn't going to buy the car for 8k anyways, i just wanted to see if you were the same person selling. I just think its funny how you post you bought it for 7k and then try to sell it on a DIFFERENT forum for 13,000$ Why the 6k markup? You haven't fixed anything on it.

01-25-2009, 03:23 PM
because someone offered me 12.5k for it so I figured I would see if I could get more than what he offered before I sold it to him. I think 12.5k is very fair considering the low mileage and I got an estimate of 1,300 to fix it completely. So for 14k you can have a mint 40k mile evo8 not to mention completely stock...seems fair.
Edit: also its the name of the game, I have been selling cars like this for a while. I mean honestly if you bought the car for 7k and someone offered you 12.5k your telling me you would keep it?

I pm'ed you on the link forums, but id actually like to see the quotes for the damage? It's hard to believe that fenders, roof, hood, door, intercooler, and mirror would only come out to 1300. Perhaps i'm wrong but you should show the quote in your for sale.
hudsonhawk
01-25-2009, 09:12 PM
Yeah I have had the same guy fix like 8 cars. He told me the dents are very easy to pull out even on the hood, and that not a lot of paint even had to be used. I don't know how to post a quote? maybe if you took the pictures to someone in your area that does body work they could tell you. Honestly if you saw the car and did body work you would know that its not even bad at all.
Edit: and I"m fixing the intercooler this weekend. My buddy is certified to weld for NASA and he is fixing it for me. Just one of the inlets got smashed a little and needs to be either bent back a little or to weld on another little section.

The thread title is "just got an Evo for a STEAL!" That last word implies he got it for well below what it's worth. How is that any different from the person that picks up a "broken" DSM for cheap and then fixes the car in 5 minutes in the old owner's driveway after signing the title.
Can you really blame him. It's not even like he's trying to hide the damage in his sale and con someone, he's just making a profit which he's entitled to do.
If any of us was handed an evo in the same condition for 7K you mean to tell you it would never cross your mind that you could fix it fairly cheaply and sell it for a nice profit?

01-26-2009, 01:12 PM
Why dont you just buy a used evo intercooler. I really think you just posted this to get people to be like "ohhh man your lucky broo." Who cares. My dad has been doing the same shit for years. So i see nothing wrong.
kstallard34
01-26-2009, 04:34 PM
I meant if you had it quoted they give you a sheet of paper listing the damages and what it cost to fix? If you didn't take it somewhere how do you know it has no frame damage and how much stuff will ACTUALLY cost? I'm not saying anything is wrong, i'm just saying i'd like something more than a mythical quote by a guy down the street.

Lucky you. An EVO is in the plans for me after I finish college. Don't listen to what everyone is saying, it is your car, and I see you obviously clearly listed its faults. Your not a scammer, you just got lucky and found a great price on an EVO and were smart about resale values.
hudsonhawk
01-27-2009, 03:38 PM
No I don't have anything on paper but like I said I drove it over to my body guy and he told me what it would take to repair it. There is no damage to any door jams, underbody, subframe, or core support. Thats why I figured it has to frame damage. Also the guy I bought it from specifically told me it didn't and he got it straight from the auction.
Edit: I've been going to the same guy for a long time to do my body work, he does it free lance and is better than most body shops.

Eh, don't listen to what Burnett's sayin', he's been moody. But yea, I think it'd be almost dumb not to try to make the most profit possible off of this, who honestly wouldn't? If you can really get 12.5 out of it, then that is more money in your wallet.
hudsonhawk
01-27-2009, 06:32 PM
Yeah he's going on every forum I put the car on to make sure everyone knows I bought it for a little over 7k. I guess some people really are that childish and have way to much time on there hands to be the internet police.

I have a friend who makes his living fixing and flipping cars. He does amazing body work in house (literally his huge garage) and fixes things right. Then sells them for an enormous profit even as repaired title vehicles. You would not believe what he pays for cars! Or, doesn't pay actually!
He's not lying about the condition it is in, or trying to say it is fixed when it isn't. So hounding all his threads is just butt hurt jealous douche bag shit. The guy is entitled to make whatever money he can make as long as he is not being deceitful IMO. If someone is willing to give him $16k for it. Then that's how it goes.
What if I won a new Cobalt? Do I have to sell it for $2500 because I didn't have to pay for it - so that's some kind of misguided fucking universal international fairness policy I have to honor? No. This situation isn't any different.

Nice find bro! Wish there were deals like that around here. There are some salvage EVOs I've seen on craigslist and stuff, but those were terrible requiring extensive body work and already having possible frame damage and they still ask for 7-9k for them.
Don't mind Burnett, he always seems to try and rain on people's parades for some reason. You will get your asking price either way, don't worry.

I never said that he's lying about any condition or that he doesn't do good work. I'm merely stating that he was very lucky to get 18grand for a rebuilt evo. Because most people wouldn't. Especially when you can find them clean and without even a rock chip on the front end for much less(original paint).
But the fact that he flipped that car and made a good profit is awesome. So now with the profit he made on that car he basically bought this evo for himself for free. THats a great move. I'm just a weird person. If i went out and someone hit me even as a stupid little fender bender. I'd probably be dissapointed with my car and sell it.
I'm not this way with my dsm's though. I've been known to buy some seriously effed dsm's. Including my buddies compromised frame gsx after he took it sideways over a curb at 80mph and nearly flipped it (landed on its side). I'm currently looking at a clean 95 for $250. All complete with a spun rod 7 bolt.
Hope this puts some insight into my madness:o. As there was no intended douchebaggery in my previous post.

You sold it to someone in Illinois right?
If so, then yes.
He was DD'ing it I guess, the clutch started to slip on him under boost and he put it up for sale.
The Talon I currently own was going to be traded for it, but, right before the trade happened he was T-boned by a Buick that ran a light. So the owner of my TSi at the time called me up and told me that the trade was off since it was in another accident, and it was on the cars "good side".
