Well I figured since I finally had some time, I would sit down and start this thread about my passion.....my 1G Eclipse. :) Okay, it all started when I had my very first car gave to me back in high school (2003). It was a very underpowered (1.8L), high mileaged, faded black '93 Eclipse. I never thought I would be so greatly attached to this car since it was not much to look at and was so slow that I didn't even try to race anyone. As time went by, it started to grow on me and soon comes the endless funding. Since a relative of mine had a mobile electronics shop, I started out by putting in a stereo system. I hung out at his shop a lot and helped him with installations and sales. He taught me a lot and gave me a bunch of experience. I was also studying electronic engineering at the time. So with all the experience and knowledge I had, I went ahead and installed a setup in my 1g that was easy on my wallet and made sure to vibrate the mirror of the car next to me. :D I used all Memphis Car Audio equipment cause I believe they have superior performance and quality. All I had was two 12's and a 1000w class D amp. Ended up getting first place in my first SPL contest. Lots of people just try to buy the biggest sized subs and amps they can without any knowledge of how the equipment works which leads to the equipment not being matched properly which leads to poor performance. Well even though you could hear me coming a mile away, the car still didn't look good when it showed up. So $2500 later, I had a full new black paint job (with an added spoiler from a GSX), 18" ICW wheels and coilovers. My black interior is in near mint condition but had those cheap looking cloth seats. One day I was in the local junk yard looking for something and I came across and totaled 1g talon tsi. For the heck of it, I took a look inside and could not believe what I saw....mint black leather seats (driver, passenger, and rear). Picked them up on the spot for $100. I put a lot of miles on my 1.8 driving back and forth to college while it looked like this....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0907081813.jpg

I've never seen an engine this reliable. It would never die no matter how much abuse you could throw at it. For 200k miles, not a thing was changed. It was stock.....from the factory. That was until the water pump leaked and caused the timing belt to snap. The funny thing is that it snapped right on the timing mark even though its a non-interference engine. As more time and miles went by, it started burning more and more oil. I knew it was getting time. After lots of research on this very helpful forum, I got the confidence to do a transplant. Luckily I'm highly mechanically inclined. I've always had the goal to go to a 2.0T so it seemed like a good time to park it and get started. Don't worry, I've got this to keep me entertained.....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0127091628.jpg

I bought this after I sold my SVT Cobra which the Cobra is another story....

I knew I wanted a full parts car to do this swap in order to make it easier. I had to find one with a battered up body cause I didn't want to destroy a decent DSM for this project. I searched the ads and found a '94 Talon tsi FWD with a 6 bolt and a 2G tranny. Exactly what I needed. Since the price was cheap I knew it wasn't gonna be in good shape which was okay for what I needed. I drove 600 miles to where it was and drove it 600 miles back. It had issues on the way like not fully boosting and an oil leak from the turbo oil return line to the oil pan. Here it is...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1102081702.jpg

The 2.0T....
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1102081702a.jpg

When I got it home, I couldn't believe it actually made it that far. It was rigged up like crazy. Too many things I can't describe. I like to do everything proper and hated seeing things half assed like missing bolts and major vacuum leaks. Oh well. Time to get started.....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1110082032.jpg

All ripped out...
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1113081832.jpg

Putting the 2G tranny to the side for now...
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1113082133.jpg

Looks to be a 6 bolt to me...
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1113082133a.jpg

Finally on the stand...
http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1113082218.jpg

Now I've already done a compression test before I pulled the motor out. Dry test showed 130, 130, 130.....90. Wet test showed 130, 130, 130, 130. Looks like bad rings so far. Now I know I've gotta strip the motor down....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0126092028.jpg

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0129092049.jpg

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0129092048a.jpg

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0129092048.jpg

Upon taking it apart, I realize I need to get a new timing cover (due to damage from improper installation), timing belt and related components, oil pump, 02 sensor and other misc. stuff that I was pretty much gonna replace anyways. It already has the balance shaft eliminator. Every part I'm taking off that can be powder coated, I have been powder coating. I grind everything smooth to have a nice finish. I plan on doing the fuel rail, exhaust manifold cover, and cam gears in black chrome. The valve cover and intake manifold in chrome and other smaller components and brackets in gloss black. I'll also be doing the motor mounts in gloss black since I'm swapping out the busted factory inserts with polyurethane inserts. Plan on painting the engine bay gloss black also...starting to sense a pattern here. Yeah I pretty much like to murder out every vehicle I own. All the cars I have gotten have been black. Here is the cheap replacement 02 sensor housing since the old one looks like rusted garbage....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1106081827.jpg

Also the motor I got had a freaking Hyundai valve cover on it since he said the old one got damaged some how so thats what he replaced it with. I went on Ebay and found one of the more rare valve covers that actually says Mitsubishi on it.....

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/1103081926.jpg

Should look good after I get it powder coated. I've already powder coated some things and will take some pics as soon as I can. Right now as it sits I have the wiring harness from the talon pulled and the computer w/fuel pump relay. Need to take a few more things off the block so I can take it to a machine shop and see what can be done to it. I know it needs to be cleaned cause there is some type of radiator stop lead all in it and I'm hoping that it just needs to be honed cause the cylinder walls looked good except for the one I'm having a problem with which has slight pitting on the walls. I've got prothane mounts, 02 sensor, EGR block off plate, and a front mount intercooler kit all ordered for now. The intercooler kit will help also in replacing all that old soft piping and the restricive 1g throttle body elbow. I also ordered a data logging kit I came across for a good price. The oil leak I had before was because the oil pan was dented where the oil return line bolts to it so I've got an oil pan on the way too. I'll be starting to take the Eclipse apart soon. This is what it looks like for now...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0201091705.jpg

You can see the wheels have been takin off and replaced with the stock ones. I need to get the tires replaced is why. Probably gonna go with a larger set of tires since the ones on there now are 215/35R18.

Thanks for reading and I'll keep you all updated as much as I can. Any info from you all is greatly appreciated.

This was my original plan with my laser before I decided I wanted awd. Good luck man. Keep a detailed build and I'm sure you'll help a few people out with the swap.

kronus
02-02-2009, 08:21 AM
Glad to see someone else has started the swap :) It's hard work, and you'll probably encounter a few things you weren't expecting, but luckily you have a parts car.

And I would highly recommend moving to meatier tires. I'm running 225's and those are definitely not enough for a FWD. Keep us posted, and good luck.:tat:

Oh, and it's funny that we both used 'reborn' in the titles of our cars. (See sig):P

SlimDSM

Yeah its definately gonna be hard work. Its such a great learning experience though. A lot of people have said just sell it and buy one that is already turbo charged. I bet the people that do that won't learn half the stuff I'm encountering. Yeah the tires I have on the 18s suck. I was thinking of getting some 235/40R18s.

Are you planning on going AWD in the future?

Sean485
02-02-2009, 02:08 PM
No awd swap for 1g's, only 2g's have similar enough chassis' to facilitate the awd swap.

Good lookin car OP, keep the updates comin.

SlimDSM
02-02-2009, 05:08 PM
Like Sean said, I don't plan on going AWD. Huge headache! I don't plan on making huge power with this anyways. Looks like I got my black polyurethane mounts in. I plan on powdercoating the mounts and having the inserts in by tonight.

Here is a couple of pictures of some things I already powdercoated...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0202091827.jpg

Here is a before shot of the mounts I did last night...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0202091830.jpg

They were busted pretty bad and the guy before me tried to fill in the mounts with silicone or something? Here they are after prepping, powdercoating, and adding the prothane inserts...

http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll113/slimdsm/0202092304.jpg

This powdercoating stuff takes a lot of time but is well worth it in the end. Don't have to worry about rust anymore thats for sure. And Sebba, that fram filter did look ancient. It almost didn't want to come off!

I'm wanting to make this one of the cleanest 1Gs people will see and to preserve the life of it. Its hard to find a decent 1G where I'm at. Almost every 1G is banged up, ragged out, or look horrible due to the owner's poor taste in accessories. One time I saw a wing that was mounted on top of the spoiler. I almost barfed. If I keep at it, I'm hoping to have mine in some shows this season.

Thats awesome!

If that is your goal, why not do an AWD?

SlimDSM
02-03-2009, 10:21 PM
ferriolom, you can buy a powdercoating kit from Eastwood for like $200. The powders are inexpensive and can do a lot of parts. You still need an air compressor and an oven. A friend of mine got a double oven for free that was still in like new condition.:D

SICK!!!! What pipe is that? And good tire choice! I've got those on my 636 right now. Is that a 600 or a 750?

SlimDSM
02-06-2009, 04:54 PM
kronus, its a 600. The pipe is a Yoshimura Japan Tri Oval. At the time I got it from Fuel Moto cause they were the only company importing them. Cost me $600 but its the best sounding GSXR600 you'll hear plus I've never seen another one around here.

Yeah that exhaust sounded sweet when I was driving the talon. I had my brother take it down the road so I could hear it take off and I've never heard a 4 cylinder sound so deep. Its a 3 inch cat-back Thermal R&D. I'll get a 3 inch down pipe sometime too.

WTF!!:realmad: The first one was so bad that it no longer has an oil port because of the pieces of metal. Looks like I gotta get a new head and cams. I'm gonna have fun finding a 1G turbo head and cams that came out of a DSM with a manual transmission since there is a difference in the cams between a DSM with a MT and an AT.

I took the block to the machine shop yesterday and all the parts I was waiting on came in. As soon as I get it back I'll at least assemble the bottom end while I try to get a new head. I was thinking of getting a bare head and buying some Crower cams. What do you all think? I think these 4G63s sound pretty mean at idle with some bigger cams. Mine would be especially since the exhaust is so deep sounding.

kronus, after you remove the glove box and the bracket it mounts to, you disconnect the wires on the blower and the evaporator box. Then you remove the two bolts at the top of the evaporator and the nut at the bottom. Then you remove the two nuts at the top of the blower and the one at the bottom. I believe the best way is to remove the evaporator box first then the blower. No one should have to remove the dash. I feel for ya cause I know you had a lot of work to do to get that dash off.

Any special angles you tried to get the evaporator and blower out? I tried and tried doing it that way but had no such luck. I mean, it's a little too late now, but I'm still curious.

Nothing real special. Just have to work with it. I actually had both off so I could reposition one to make room while I removed the other. I'm actually curious how fun it will be putting them back in.

The picture quality and lighting doesn't do the cam gears justice since I powder coated them black chrome. They turned out real well. Hopefully I'll get the valve cover and intake done tomorrow. When the car really starts coming together I will use an actual digital camera instead of taking quick pictures with my phone.

I did a two stage powder coating process this time. I first powdered them in high gloss black. Then after it was done, I scuffed the parts of them I wanted chrome and left the raised letters and lines alone. Then I powdered them chrome and before baking them, I wiped off the raised letters and lines to expose the high gloss black...

Hey dude nice build so far. But a bit of constructive criticism, no pc as far as i know can stand up to an o2 housings high temps, and if thats extreme chrome you used i recommend a topcoat of clear so it can withstand chemicals. Without a clear coat good luck my friend.

Looks amazing so far!

A man at a local shop told me it was a purge valve selonoid/solonoid. I can not find this part at any shop or dealership. Can anyone help me? I would appreciate it very much.

I used to think I would never have been able to do this. I just did a lot of research especially with this awesome site (DSMTALK ). In doing so I gained more confidence and finally told myself it was time to start. Just gain more confidence in yourself and you'll learn a lot in the process.

Haha. :D I definately made sure to have another ride so I could take as much time as I need. Its been so long since I've driven it, I'm starting to have withdrawals. The Corvette is starting to bore me.

All I can tell you is to check junkyards or maybe find someone on the internet who has deleted all of their emissions parts.

lol, I could do it mechanically no problem. I just finished a major overhaul on my friends 2g and I have rebuilt everything on my 1.8. I am also working on a 74' Trans Am project and a 69 GTO drag car for other people. I have been working at my dads transmission/drivetrain shop since I was 14. My problem is that I dont have the attention to detail to make stuff look like that, and I dont have the money to complete it.

I cut the holes out for the piping to go through just to see where everything was going to land. I don't have the intercooler mounted yet. The hardest part right now is cutting up the crash beam.

Important tools for bumper clearance. Sawzall (will slice through a crash beam like nothing), small pneumatic angle grinder with cutting wheel, carbide bits and sanding scrolls, jig saw, and files.

It Y's out with the connector for the knock sensor. Its not for the cruise control. Its just a two pin connector.

I have a problem with my datalogger though. I have a Palm IIIc with mmcd v1.8g on it. When the 1.8 engine was in it the logger was working fine and monitoring everything. Since the swap, the logger won't monitor anything at all. It will scan the computer for codes and it will also test components in the test mode like it should but it just won't monitor anything. This and not having a tach right now are my only problems. Anyone have any advice?

SlimDSM

Disregard the comment about the datalogger. It works fine now.

SlimDSM
04-16-2009, 08:28 PM
Well I tried today to fix the tach on the 1.8 cluster. At first I was pleased to see that I tapped into the correct wire and got it working. Problem is that its way off. Its off by like 1500 rpm according to my datalogger. Guess I'll just install the turbo cluster. Reason I didn't want to use the turbo cluster is because for some odd reason the needle for the boost gauge is missing and plus I wanted to have the appearance of the 1.8 cluster in the dash.

Right now I've put on a new bov and took a test run around the neighborhood. I have to tweak it out to get rid of the compressor surge. It's definately a lot louder than the stock one. I also need to put some fine mesh on the bumper to protect the intercooler cause I can already tell the bugs are gonna destroy it if I don't.

Bad news as of right now. When I rev hard it blue smokes a little or while under boost it smokes like crazy. It smokes very little or none at idle. It does not smoke at start up. The engine might only have 50 miles on it at the most. Compression is perfect on all cylinders. The 14b has no in and out play and has a little side to side play. There is some oil at the bottom of the v-band clamp on the turbo. So I'm guessing the turbo is going bad? Any ideas? I'm not sure how many miles are on the turbo but it's definately not young. Seems like it getting worse and worse every time I take the car out.

I would say the turbo, check the IC pipes and see if they are full of oil. Also make sure your drain line isn't clogged.

SlimDSM
05-09-2009, 06:38 PM
IC pipes are clean. I just did a compression test and got this...

#4=115, #3=140, #2=110, #1=140

The number 4 and 2 spark plugs are blackened compared to the other two. Compression was perfect just a week ago and I barely drove it.

SlimDSM
05-09-2009, 07:34 PM
Well I did another compression test because I forgot to do a wet test and I may have messed the numbers up before. Now the compression is good on all cylinders except for #3 which is 120. Did a wet test and it went to 150. I don't know what the f*ck is going on! That was a pretty expensive 50 miles I got out of that engine. Geez.

Well for now the Eclipse is dead. Doesn't look like I'll be making it to any more car shows this season. I don't think my rings set correctly for some reason in cylinder #3. After running it and doing some tests it seems that the compression in that cylinder is getting worse. Hopefully I will know more when I take the head off but for now I'm gonna wait until I make a decision on buying a Stage 1 short block, fuel mods, and a larger turbo. Anyone have any suggestions on compression ratios and turbos? I would be happy around the 300-400hp range.

Sebba
05-13-2009, 11:02 AM
Could you just re-ring it?

SlimDSM
05-13-2009, 03:54 PM
Maybe if it didn't damage the cylinder. It just seems like everything that came from that donor car is cursed. Haha. What's next to go out? The transmission? Geez. I didn't have to spend a lot of money in the short block when rebuilding it so if I went ahead and bought a built short block I wouldn't be out much money plus I'll get a warranty with it. I'm not planning on messing with the eclipse too much right now until I get in the mood to tear it apart...again. I got some goodies in the mail the other day that I ordered before the eclipse gave me trouble. A triple pod pillar, boost gauge, fuel pressure gauge w/ sending unit, oil pressure gauge w/ sending unit, and the banjo bolt adapter for the fuel.
