I'm looking for information on converting my GSX from an automatic transmission to a manual transmission. If anyone has looked into this or possibly performed a conversion, I'd appreciate some help. I need a basic summary of the work that would need to be done(new ecu, placement of clutch, etc), ballpark price figures for parts and labor, and maybe some suggestions of aftermarket transmissions made for a 99 GSX. A six speed would be nice. Don't bother replying if you're just going to tell me that it would be easier to sell my car and buy a manual. I've heard that before, and it's no help to me. Trust me, with the deal I got on my car it would be worth dumping a few grand to make it a manual.

ACK! Yeah, that's me. TRUST ME. If you haven't sunk a load of money into mods on your car, and if it's still remotely stock, sell it, but a 5-speed. Then you might be able to get a warranty, and with your car being a '99, that'd be your best bet.

You don't need a different ECU, no aftermarket tranny is available (unless you want a custom rally trans that'll cost you $15k).

I did all the labor myself, but the local dealer quoted me $6500 to do the swap. I did it all myself for about $2500 for all the misc. parts and stuff.

5-speed trans
5-speed xfer case
5-speed rear end
5-speed AWD front axles
Shifter assembly
Shift cables
Clutch Pedal Assembly
5-speed Brake pedal assembly
shift knob and boot
Symborski shifter kit
Clutch line
Slave cylinder
Rear Trans bracket
Upper Trans bracket
Clutch
Flywheel
Chunk of harness off of the 5-speed for backup light switch
5-Speed starter
5-Speed speedo sensor

I *think* that's all...but...?
If you get all the parts and leave your car at my house for two weeks along with $1500, I'll do the swap for you ;)

Hey, thanks for that part list. What do you think is the best way to get ahold of those parts? Should I just order through a dealer, or maybe shop the junk yards? Where did you get yours? thanks again

I got most of my stuff through junk yards and people parting their cars out. Some of the things like the slave and master cylinders are best bought new from the dealer, and I got a custom clutch line fabbed by RRE. It's also a good idea to buy all new hardware (bolts, etc...)

There's also a "ring" in the end of the crank that you'll need to remove in order to fit the flywheel on. A couple of vise grips and a BFH and some penetrating lube should do it. I already had an MT crank in my car, so I didn't need to do this.

I'm around here every so often. The majority of the posts make me dumber for reading them :) I'll just comment on things when I feel that I can help, or when I feel that I can make some money :)
