So I bought the white car about a year and half ago now. I drove it for about 4 months before it spun a rod bearing due to me being lazy and more importantly broke. I didnt have an oil return gasket or money to buy silicone and had none left at my house. Yes college was rough. So the time has come to put this thing back together since I have decided to get rid of my baby and am looking to move and just cant do it with two cars. My black 1g. I bought it with 32k orig miles and made plenty of newb errors on this and did a mild build and blew it up in the same year. So this is the white car basically how I bought it. Well the hood was on it. It is a auto just like my other one. I seem to have a soft spot for them.

The brown truck is my current transportation. A.k.a Brownly. Its an 87 ford f-250 ext cab long box 2 wheel drive with a turboed 6.9 and a manual trans. Slow and no fun.
It was bone stock with 123xxx mi on it. Got it for 1700. Had new front half shafts and the timing belt had been redone by an idiot. He didnt tighten up the tensioner pivot arm bolt and the belt nearly walked off the gears. It made one hell of a groove in the timing cover. Also the nut on the driver side cv shaft was not tight. So after fixing these two things a basic tune up and replacing the intake mani gasket. It was gone around the number one runner making a huge vacuum leak. I drove it for a while until it spun the rod.

So didnt know this got accepted. I have been spending a lot of money since I put this up and doing a bunch of work. I started off with plans for a 16g and bought some parts and had them installed. Couldnt really find one in the price rang I was looking for so I purchased a hx 35 instead. :) So here are some pics of the things I bought for the 16g build.

Since I have bought the HX35 Ive changed a lot of things. Ditched the safc, precision 350, megan O2 housing. I have purchased link v3, punishiment fmic, FIC 1150s, Areomotive AFPR, -6 feed with a 255 intank and 044 external, BC 280s, JMF race mani. I ported my head. Mainly the bowls and just a little bit of port smoothing on the intake side and some divider modification and enlarging the exhaust side. I have 1mm oversize valves with undercut stems with crower springs and retainers. There are some other things Ive done as well. Im just frustrated because tonight when I was bolting my motor up to my trans I managed to crack the bell housing like a jack ass. So now I have to figure out how Im going to get my hands on a tig welder so I can get it fixed.

That sucks, but its cool to see your mod list getting better and better the more time the car is off the road. Your decision to ditch the safc makes me happy for you.

Yes sir, after reading over the list one more time I am pleased. G/L with the build.

Why thanks my man. When Im felling a bit more ambitious I will get pics of my bottom end up. Ross scat combo with kiggly girdle and L19 head studs. Im really excited to get this running. Im going to be tuning with link on sd. I wish I had someone around here to help me with using link. I have lots of pics of my parts and progress just figured I would post them up a bit at a time. As far as the bell housing goes Im thinking about taking the auto trans out of my other car and dropping it in. Unless I can get my hands on a tig welder tomorrow.

So my bep housing showed up today! I cant wait to get my trans back from being welded to bolt the turbo on. Im down to just needing the oil feed, return and exhaust. Maybe a few other things. I will snap some pics of the turbo when I get back from work. For now here are some pics of my bottom end.

When I got this thing back from the machine shop I realized my pistons were in backwards. It was the weekend and I wanted to get the motor in so I pulled it apart and flipped them around. I was kinda pissed but didnt want to deal with taking it back and waiting for him to get it done.

I bought it cut it and took it to a local welding shop to get tigged together. Nice work at a very cheap price. Im waiting for my bov flange to show up so I cant get my upper pipe finished. My lower pipe needs to be taken back in and shortened up since Im not going with the 16g anymore.

Are you reusing the water pump and oil pump/case?
Are you using the internal w/g?
So far have you learned anything new from this build in particular?

My water pump only has a few thousand on it and my case prolly has about 60k on it and its still orig. My first dsm was an auto. The kid told me it was a white 5 speed. Turned out to be a black auto. Been hooked ever since and then 2 years later I bought the white one. Its rusty so prolly in the spring everything will get moved to the black one and I will get rid of the white one. I learned a lot more from my first build with a fp green. A lot of what not to do. This one Im going to be learning a lot more on how to tune. I had my green set up tuned in at 11.8 at wot and 14.7 cruising on just a translator. The green build only lasted for a summer. Didnt get a wide band in it until a day before I melted a piston down. I messed with my exs car and learned a lot from that too. 14b 15psi made 273whp. Thing was a blast bein a front wheel. Im learning to be more patient and buy quality parts. Dont half ass things either. Thats why these cars have some what of a terrible rep in my opinion. All I here from my parents is how I need to get rid of both of them. Hopefully I will be moving out in a week or so. That will make me much happier.

I'm impressed.
I ask questions about this build because it sounds like you have your shit together and I might be able to learn something from you.
This speaks to your wisdom:

As you can see if you follow pittsburgh builds, quality parts are a must.

Yes. I hit up ebay from time to time. I use to rely on it. Now I only go there when its like a flange or something like that. Anything else I rely on extrempsi pretty much. The 14b setup had minimal things done to it and again was only tuned with a logger and translator. I went to school to be a mechanic and while I was there I took the high performance part and got to learn how to tig weld. Im just not good with aluminum still. Learned how to do some sheet metal work, and engine machining. We had a 4 axis cnc mill thing and I did a 350 block in 30 min. It was awesome. Decked and bored which in most shops would take an hour or two. Ive got a lot of mechanical knowledge and I have the basic idea on how to tune. Im just nervous with using link. Im going to be running sd too so its going to be a really big learning curve. The plans for the car are low 11s. If I get into the 10s Im going to be ecstatic. This thing should be on the road here in a few weeks. There are 0 dsmers around here so it sucks. We just have some rice buckets in town that Im going to have some fun fucking with. Maybe some 600s just for fun. Not saying Ill win but it would be more fun. Im just wondering if I will be able to spool on the stock converter in a decently quick time.

I was expecting it to basically be a 7cm housing but its not like that at all. Its a .55 are and the opening down to the wheel is really wide so it should work very considering its still on the pos mits flange.

Ive decided that I want to have a polished compressor housing. I don't know why I do these things. Its very time consuming. Although it does look nice when its shiny. :) Im not real good at shaving yet. I got some deeper grooves that will take for ever to get the scratches out. So it won't be perfect but it will look nice still.

I made tons of progress today. If I can get photobucket to work I will have some pics to show for it.
Today
I got my trans back so I got that and my motor in.
Everything is plugged in
Turbo is on
Intake mani is on
Got the external oil cooler finished up
Bumper is on lights are on
Finished up some of the wiring
Tomorrow
Get the fuel side of things done
Wire up the wideband to the ecu
Wire up the map sensor
Have to get a IAT pigtail still
Hook up the boost gauge
Rad hoses and fill it with water and oil
Paint the vc and install
Put the plugs in it
Also have to finish the throttle cable
Work on getting SD loaded onto V3
Go through and do all my inital checks and make sure everything is there
Then I will have to order more parts before I can move on.

I will. Ive been doing tons of reading on the link forums. Trying to read logs and such. It seems like it has tons of potential. Plus I hate having the gm maf in my IC pipe it looks like poo. I have a evo maf but just dont want to go with a draw through. So for now its off to breakfast. Is there a better picture hosting website than photobucket? Not happy with how the -10 line fit. I had to remove just a small bit of metal from my motor mount and the hose clamps are to keep the line from kinking. I need to buy some more -10 line and maybe shorten up the barbs so the line will flex better and wont kink.

So I got it running today. No major things really occurred so that was nice. I currently dont have brakes because one of my rusty ass rear lines took a shit on me so Im blocking them off for this week and will be replacing both lines and the fuel return this coming weekend. Took it for a trip back our lane. Seems to be the ritual brake in procedure for my cars. Did a couple first gear pulls just because. Got lots of knock and I need to get my ve table dialed in before I do anything of the sort again. Its only on 8psi until I get some exhaust on the car. I tried making my own O2 housing. Failed miserably not proud of how it turned out at all. So instead of sacrificing other parts to have a decent exhaust I will be running open a O2 housing for a short while. I intend on keeping this thing in closed loop as much as possible. It does pull pretty good for only being on 8psi and seen as much as 30lbs/min airflow out of it. Only went to 6k. I still have to make a intake pipe and install a oil catch can. Power wash it as well. Another thing I have to do is secure the bosch O44 pump a little better. That will get done this week after work some time. Anyways here are some somewhat complete engine bay pics.

I funded about half of this out of pocket and the other half in the form of a small loan from my grandparents. I cant wait to get this thing to the track at least once before the shoot out. Im hoping for some good times and plan on switching to E85 by the end of the summer.

So my car has been on the road for a little over a month now. SD is freakin awesome. I love it. Its so easy to use. Ive had my troubles already. My poorly made o2 housing was ditched after a week or two. I got a ebay housing. Its a nice piece. Had to file the flange surface flat be cause it wad a bad warp spot around the wastegate tube and leaked like a sieve. Ive been through one turbo due to some return line problems and my boost supply to the wastegate being blocked causing some huge boost spikes. I was running push lock line from the 044 to the rail and it kept blowing up so I got rid of that and switched to some nylon braided -6 line. Had some troubles with the ebay wastegate as well. The base came loose and was spinning around burning my control line. My trans has been going into limp mode when it rains and I had a pulse generator go bad as well. Ive broke an oil squirter and had a crack in my pan. Both are fixed. The pan was cracked when I put it on it was just a small hair line and it would only leak when running. Now it has some terrible lifter tick that has to be seen to. Also last week my crank sprocket came loose and slid off the crank. Luckily it was only at idle and it only bent the exhaust valves. I got the head fixed and put it back on this week. Ditched the BC280s and now have some HKS272s. I can now finally build full boost at the line and the G-Tech said 11.88@127 compared to me run at the track which netted my a 15.42@105 with a 3.2 60ft on the 280s. The top end is a bit less but my drive ability has improved some and I can now launch and the top end loss isnt that much really. Ive also had some overheating issues but that has stopped now that I retorqued the head to 120ft/lbs instead of 100ft/lbs. I still have an exhaust leak to fix, aluminum radiator, and adjustable cam gears to install this week before we go back to the track on Friday.

I will be going to the track this Friday. Im sure I can have one of my sisters run a camera for me.:) Well some of the stuff going wrong is either from me not finishing the job properly and others just kinda happened. Its a learning process and I learn something new every time something breaks and I put it back together.

I degreased the engine bay at work and it is much cleaner now. I dont plan on keeping the car for a whole lot longer. I seem to wash it about once every other week. I do understand where you are coming from.

Well Friday went terrible. Got up there in good time and everything but my car decided to be a whore. I had to get gas and the pumps at the track were closed. I drove down the street to get some gas. I was having some fun it was running pretty good. Then as we are getting ready to renter the track the car dies. It would not start after this. When it did it was about 3 hours later and I am still not sure what went wrong. We swapped the cas, pulled the o2 sensor. It had spark and I could hear the injectors clicking and the fuel pressure was up. The mechnical timing was on too. Once it started it ran great even pulled good. Put it in the staging lanes was going to leave it run but it started getting warm so I had to shut if off. I got it to start again and moved it ahead. When it was time to pull onto the track it wouldnt start and I had to push it off.
When I was messing with it it I found that bumping the starter gave it the best chance of starting and that I could see my intake manifold gasket glow some times when cranking. Finally it started and I took it to one of the empty pit roads and tried to launch it. Boost was building slower than normal and it left pretty slow. So I took it over to the trailer and we retarded the timing and it wouldnt start. So then we advanced it a whole bunch and it fired up. Took it back to the staging lanes and it was now last call. I shut it off and we pushed it up to the track where it started. Got to the line tried brake boosting and nothing. So I just let it roll out and boost came and the car felt like a turd. I was looking at the gauges and the only thing I could see wrong was the afrs were 10 flat for some reason. Every other pull has been around mid 11's. At 7k the thing felt like it was falling on its face. I shifted and things got worse. It pulled for a second then the trans down shifted and then went back into gear and the motor died. I had the pedal to the floor and put it in first but there was no saving it. I rolled across the line with a 22.90@17.23. I had water coming from somewhere I couldn't see. The check engine light never cam on to indicate over heating.
I ended up being towed off the track where we put the car on the traler and headed home. The DSM is now sitting in the barn where the motor and trans are working on being pulled and torn apart. The only other time Ive had this starting issue was when I washed the enging bay of the car and I just chalked it up to water being in a plug somewhere. This car is frustrating but its not making me what to get rid of it. Just say how much is it to fix it this time.
car_freak66
09-20-2009, 10:30 PM
Turns out I had a oiling failure. No spun bearings but pistons and crank are trashed. The car is going back under the knife. I want to get rid of it but for once my father is saying I should keep it and he will be getting involved on this go around.
The plans now are to switch to a stroker. Eagle crank, Scat rods and Weiscos. Kiggly flex plate restalled converter and a rebuilt trans with a better front clutch pack, maybe a reworked valve body. Still plan on running the HX35 but ditching the FP mani for a header. I will be stripping the interior to make the car as light as possible. We plan on it being a track oriented car that might see the street twice a month. At the moment next seasons build is quite young in our minds and Im sure there will be some changes as to what we are doing since its a rough sketch. My goal for the car is to be a mid 10 car. That means Im going to have to make it a full second faster than it is now. I dont think it will be hard but only time will tell.
