Well gents it's that time. I've been waiting about a year to make this thread and its time. As most know its a 1999 GSX. I'm keeping the stock 7 bolt but going .020 over. Since money is tighter than first expected, I'm only doing the motor for now, I had plans to get a shep tranny and some DSS axles but that will be on hold for now. Alittle history of the car. I picked it up in 2005 from an older man completly stock with 107k on the dash. I started modding it shortly after and ran a best time of 12.6 @107 last year on a terrible tune and pump gas all on a stock motor. Well here we go...

The new parts going in:
Weisco HD Pistons 8.5:1
Eagle H beam connecting rods
OEM main bolts
OEM composite head gasket
Crower Valve springs
Crower retainers
ACL race rod bearings
ACL race main bearings
ACL thrust washers
HKS 272 cams
Findanza adj cam gears
L19 head studs
Ferrea copper exhaust valves
Ferrea bronze intake valves
Ferrea intake/exhaust valve seals
Ferrea valve locks
Balance shaft elminator kit
Greddy Timing belt
OEM oil pump
PTE 880's
Walbro 255
aero afpr
dsmlink
fp 4'' intake
JMF SMIM
Q45 Throttle body
PTE 5031E
GReddy Type S BOV
DSMLINK
SSAC FMIC with fogs!!!!
Megan Oil pressure gauge
Megan Boost gauge
Megan EGT gauge
NGK AFX WB
Greddy EO-1 Boost Controller

Have fun with those poly mounts. They are a PITA when you put the motor back in. I just got done putting my motor in with full poly mounts.

Looks good though, cant wait to see it all done. Good luck with your build.

I don't know why your using megan gauges. Why not at least go prosport?
L19 headstuds is a lot of money, why not use arp headstuds and the money you save can go to a better headgasket at least an MLS one.
Then you can get arp main and rod bolts.
I'd like to see how you put on fog lights with the ssac fmic. I kind of want to loose mine so I can put my fogs back in.
Also isn't the ngk the farthest from accurate wideband out there? I would get an uego.
Either way good luck with the build.

He wants Megan gauges because he saw them on my car and liked them (This is before I got my AEM WB). I have them illuminated all the time since they are tinted. You can barely see them if you're not in the driver's seat. I can see them clear as day.

What kind of numbers are you trying to get out of this build. I like how it sounds.

MacGSX
05-14-2009, 11:22 AM
I honestly dont have a HP/TQ goal. I just want it to be fast. Low 11's high 10's would be nice.

I have heard good and bad things about the NGK AFX just like anything else out there. I've used it for about a year and it's been good to me. The gauges, I like them. I had Autometer C2's which I wasted like 600 dollars on but they were to bright and flashy, so I went with these. The L19's are for reassurance :) And for the Head gasket, I've read a ton of reviews and everyone seems to be having luck with it so thats why I am doing what I am doing. I went with only parts that are tried and true.

Some more Pictures for people to stare at :D

Spent about an hour on her this morning just unbolting random things.

After Much dileberation and contemplating (I flipped a coin) The AC is getting pulled.

50trim is the pump gas king!

Yup, this is staying on pump gas 99% of the time so the 50trim is staying.

So, this is day three of my build. Things are going alittle slower than expected. I spent the whole weekend hanging with the girlfriend and didnt even see the car. Now that she is back to work so am I :D

Got the transfercase pulled along with the driver side axle. The passenger side is giving me MAJOR problems since EVERY BOLT is frozen. I got a few out but still none that I need to remove it. Not to mention I've sliced three fingers trying to pry the axle from the tranny which is still stuck in there :( All in all today hasnt been to great. I had to stop for the time being before I went crazy. However once that axle is out, the motor will pop right out and I'll be done with that.

Yey, for me. I heated up the bolt that holds the bottom of the fork together and I got the nut and the head of the stud off!!! To bad the rest of the bolt is still frozen in there :( I'm done for today, off to see the girlfriend for dinner. I hate my life.

Jordan

HOT97ECLIPSEGSX
05-18-2009, 02:06 PM
I'm jealous! You get to see the girlfriend for "dinner" :naughty:

Ask her...

You: "Have you ever had the num num treatment?"

Her: "Num num treatment?"

You: "You know...num num num num num num num num" (fast)

My car pissed me off because of a couple stupid things lately, too..

Marq97GSX
05-18-2009, 03:30 PM
..yeah, she won't be able to deny the num num treatment...

Sick build. I too hate frozen bolts, especially when 2 days of PB Blaster doesn't break them loose. Makes me want to kick a dog or a cat, except mine.

Good luck, and don't let these guys change your mind for you. I did some research myself as well. And I went with the OEM composit HG too!

Granted I entended to go with A1 head studs but my budget said I had to use ARP :( Oh well *shrug* Which reminds me I need to check the torque on them since they have been heat cycled a few times now.

Make sure to pull the differential off before trying to pull the motor, it makes it way easier. Yes you can get the motor out with the differential on but its a PITA.

WOOT! Got the engine pulled. All in all it wasnt bad considering I did it all alone and only had 4 mornings to work on it. Came out pretty easy with the tranny attached although I had to put my foot in its ass a few times. Now it sits on the hoist while I relax the rest of the day, then tommorow, the tear down of the block and head starts. I still never got that fork to play nice. What a PITA. Oh well, on to the pictures.

What was the reason for the oem HG?

And what happen to OP's transfer case?

The "fire rings" seal better than most other after market HG's and I didn't have the spare money at the time to afford a MLS Mitsu HG, nor the time to make sure the mating surface was perfect. Good seal, easy to seal and very affordable, so the choice was obvious to me.

Yea, I've heard no bad things about the OEM Comp HG, but anyways, we'll save that debate for the right thread :)

So I worked alittle bit the past day but didnt get to much done. Got most of the front case off but the crank pulley is giving me problems. When I pulled the tranny it made me very happy to see how clean it looked. Then I pulled the oil pan it made me even happier. Not a spec of dirt/ metal shaving in the pan....

Update: Things are still going slow for now. Took me awhile to get an engine stand. Once I pick up the bolts tommorow to mount the engine I should have the blocked stripped and ready to be sent in. So far so good, nothing bad has emerged which makes me happy. Some more pictures of the progress.

The clutch (Act 2600, Street disk and Light flywheel) Doesnt look to bad for the mileage and hard launches she has seen.

Doesn't look like he has much equipment let alone much ''shit'' to have all over the place.

That's because when I'm not using my tools, I roll and carry all my tool boxes into the basement and lock them up. What you see in the pictures is in my garage bay and I dont like to keep things out in the open. Not to mention I have 2 big plastic totes with all of my car parts to stay organized. It may look like I dont have alot of stuff but thats becasue I dont leave things laying around.

LOL, yea man it should be apart today. I had to wait and get help to get that freaking bolt off the front case, that thing was insane. I had a 10 foot pipe and it still gave me hell. I'm about to run and get some bolts for the engine stand and should have it striped by 10. Then I'm gonna try and run it down to the machine shop.

And there will be spanking Chris, but its going to be jen slapping you when you get passed by a "girly 2g" come august and my un defeated record stays in tact ;)

Man what a PITA. People over on purity insisted it was a 12mm 12pt, but I swore it was a 14. Ended up being a 13mm 12pt.... Go figure. Once I got that socket, everything went smooth like butter. I might actualy be ready by the showdown :D

Who checks it? Anyone who likes to keep their engine running.

A line hone not fix end play nor do bearings, if the surface of the crankshaft isn't consistent and rippled.

Since I'm waiting for the block to get machined and I didn't feel like getting dirty before I pick up the girl, I figured I would start the interior today. I ripped out the carpet in preperation to go power wash it(Was going to do it with mine but I figured the high pressure soap at the car wash would help) Ripped out all the unneeded wires under the dash, etc. Once the carpet goes back in I'll be running the guage wires and my WB wires and then all that will be needed is a nice deck. I think I will be looking for an inexpensive double din to put in. Here are some shots of the interior.

Well my carpet is done. At first today I was a bit upset not really seeing a major differance untill I Looked at the picture I took the other day  AMAZING! The only way to clean carpet from now on in my eyes is to remove it. For mine I did the following:

1. Removed carpet and got rid of all the loose dirt
2. Soaked the carpet in Resolve
3. Went to the local car wash and hosed it down real good
4. Let it dry completly
5. Soaked and scrubed with blue coral
6. Power washed clean
7. Vaccumed with wet vac(no filter)
8. Hung to dry

All in all I'm pretty happy. The bad stains that remain have no shot of comming out. I looked closely and the carpet is actualy dyed that color :( But I'm still happy.

A clean carpet always is nice. I work at a quick lube/detailing place and we do shampoo's and things of the sort. On a sunday we weren't open I took my Laser down and scrubbed the piss out of my carpet and shampoo'd it. World of difference, and it doesn't smell like a farm from the previous owner.

Your car is looking sharp mang. Are you keeping the exterior the same?

I decided against doing it myself since I spent so much money on everything I didnt wanna mess it up. By next week the motor should be fully assemebled and then all I need is a tranny :D

I have no clue, I'm not looking  I'll try and start totaling up the cost maybe tonight. I'm kind of curious too. I've been getting ok deals on most of the stuff, nothing great but any break in price I'm greatful for. The machine work I expected to be a bit more expensive but so far it's been decent. To balance my rotating assembly push my pistons on my rods and to polish the crank all was only $189 so I was happy about that. I'll try and get a number soon. I still have my transmission to do too!!! thants another $2400 alone. I'm so poor it isnt even funny. I literally dont do ANYTHING. I just cant afford to. BUT my car will run again and be ready for the show down!!!!!!!

And you have to be very thankful that you found a shop that can machine a motor, I hate when things are out of my hands. I'll be taking my motor up for work at our local machine shop, I'm very nervous about it.

TRE? Dude. Make sure you do your research; I would hate to see you end up where I did to save a few dollars... But my TRE trans (the 3rd one they sent me, b/c the 1st 2 were too broken to even go in the car) did last a little longer than my PTE 50 trim, so maybe you'll have better luck. Unsprung is way smarter IMO, the biggest failure in the ACT disks is the springs popping out, if you are going with something as aggressive as a pucked disk just go unsprung.

ITS READY TO START!!!!! I just need to go buy oil. I've been having issues with the suspension the past few days so I've been working on that. I snapped the head and nut off the bolt that holds the arm to the fork so I needed to get a new arm and now cant get the bolt that holds it in  I'm gonna go out today and get the oil and swing by a few hardware stores.

That and my other big problem is IC piping. I was just going to use a 90* reducer at the TB for the time being but that will never work with the new SMIM so I'm trying to figure somthing out with that. It's a bunch of small gay ass problems holding me back :(

Yea, I get going on my OCD run somtimes and clean the shit out of it while I'm working, thats the only reason it looks clean.

It does look "busy" in the pics, but I still have the main harness just laying out, and some other wires sitting on top of things that I'm still working on. When the IC piping goes in, I'll start hiding all the wires better.

It's not fully bolted up. Got 2 screws on the top and the sides are just being held in by the little nubs.

It was somewhat fast but I have been rushing things to get done for the show down. This winter I'm going to probably tear into it again(not remove the trans or motor) but clean the bay up, paint alittle, etc.

Why did you build a 7 bolt?

lazylaser
08-12-2009, 10:38 PM
Why did you build a 7 bolt?

Its out of a '99, he'll be fine, few if any 99's cw. The cam/crank position pickups are better in the 7 bolt, hence kiggly came out with some of their products for the 6bolt. The seven bolt has improvements over the 6, esp with forged internals, the only reason not to use them is cw, which shouldnt be an issue for MAC.

Rule of thumb: If the 7bolt has been on the road for ten years, under 50trim boost and hasen't cw'd by now it should be just fine. I'd be more worried about the trans holding up than the motor, but that is where luck comes into play.

Gamble
08-12-2009, 10:51 PM
Why did you build a 7 bolt?

Nothing wrong with it. I have a BUILT 7 bolt as of 3 or 4 years ago. So far 10k miles on it and not a problem at all. My block was out of a 95.

Loner
08-12-2009, 11:10 PM
Ok, so mostly the crank walk was from the early years of the 2g's. Thanks for the info.

MacGSX
08-13-2009, 06:45 AM
Yea, I built it for the exact reason Lazy mentioned. The 99's are "supposed" to be a better deisgn and not walk. That and they say once they've reached 100k and havnt walked they most likely wont(like lazy mentioned) I havnt ever heard of one walking personally. The second small reason I stayed with a 7 bolt is becasue of all the morons in the world who say 6 bolts are superior to the 7 and it's retarded to build one etc etc.

I'm hoping this stage 3 TRE holds up but I dont think I have anything to worry about. The weakest part of the driveline right now is probably the transfer case :(

Well its off to the DMV to get my plate WOOT! Decided not to go with "Call AAA" I check for 2 plates every week to see if they become available and one did!! I really wanted "IM STOCK" but it's still taken so I'm settling for "IM SLOW"

So I havn't updated this in awhile becasue I have been to busy driving it! It's got about 150-200 miles on her now and two trips down the 1320 :tree: I used the break in method of deceling from high rpm, driving at various rpm, and then driving it like your going to its entire life. I am doing a compression test tommorow so lets hope everything seated!

So, the first time EVER down the track I babied it out of the hole and ran a 12.6 @ 111mph. I have a bad exhaust leak at the o2 housing, a ton of boost/vac leaks and I was at 17psi along with a tune that I mocked up with 2 pulls at 7am sunday morning(day of the showdown) which landed me a carless driving ticket :( . With everything fixed/tuned and the boost set at 30 I should be able to get my low 11 high 10 :D:D
