Hey everyone I thought I would ask for tips on building a FWD eclipse.
Right now I have a holset he351cw (60mm compressor)
Im using a revhard manifold and I am on 750cc injectors with ds-map for tuning. I also have a walbro 255 fuel pump
I have an electronic 2-step controller that i will be using. Im hoping this will help me in third gear.
Ill be posting my status on this thread.

Ok here are some pics of the engine bay as of right now. I have a lot of work to do :-(
I just received my new compressor for my turbo. I guess the last compressor got chewed up from dirt or something.
on the last picture there is a rubber grommet and I was wondering if that led inside the car at all. if it does I can use it for my gauges (water temp, oil pressure, boost gauge.)

Looks like manifold is almost finished :) The welder that is doing this for me is doing a pretty good job.
The flange I had was a t3 and a mitsu flange, so now instead of the revhard manifold being t4 it is t3 and mitsu.
Now I need to get the oil line made, get the remote external wastegate flange made, I may buy new manifold studs......, get 3.5" narrow v-band flange put on my downpipe, make oil drain pipe, get new gaskets.
Im hoping to have this all finished by this week!!!

I think im actually one of the first dsm people to use the Holset HE351cw. There are a couple people using the he351ve which is the variable geometry turbo.
But I have only read of a couple of honda people using this specific turbo.
here are the specs on it
"60mm inducer / 85mm backface. The tubine housing is a 9cm^2.
Turbine wheel is a 65mm backface / 58mm inducer. "

Well I got a lot of work done today :-)
Finally did my gauges, yes it is ghetto but it is functional. I still need to mount my boost gauge but all the wiring is finished.
Currently I have two switches (ricer status ) One controls my fan and the other controls my dc inverter for my laptop. I will be installing one more switch that will be for the boost controller 8)
I Reinstalled my intake manifold, It was leaking pretty bad and I fixed all of the leaks in my throttle body :)
Next ill be installing my water pipe. Then I need to fix my dipstick, its moving pretty freely.

I should have like 41. I think when its in this thread they dont count as real posts...
So.....
Here we go guys down to the wire.
Here is what I need to purchase.
oil drain gasket to pan.
oil filter
OIL (still debating what type)
remote mount wastegate tube (racefab)
Downpipe modification (racefab)
temporary 180 degree radiator pipe for intercooler
get a dumptube to the atmosphere (???????? not sure where locally)
gasket from turbo to manifold (???????? not sure where locally)
v-band clamp for turbo
What I need to do?
Mount turbo and manifold
Hook up downpipe
Put filter on turbo
mod hotside intercooler piping.
hook up wastegate correctly.
Put oil in car
Put coolant in car
Hope there are no leaks!!!!!
I think thats it......Any other thoughts??? I hope im not forgetting anything
I like Royal Purple 10w30 personally, but more importantly just change your oil often, I do mine every 2500 miles. I know Red uses wallyworld everything and it has worked for him, but he just knows to keep up on his oil changes like you are supposed to.

Ehh not too much to actually put together in my opinion. Main thing is getting stuff fabbed up.
It's like 10 bucks more per oil change, its worth it IMHO. I would probably run redline oil though if I could find it locally.

Why dont you think im going to be impressed with the turbo?
The exhaust outlet flange is 3.5" narrow v--band. Which is almost a 4" v-band outlet. I have it going down to 3"
Honestly the only thing im worried about is when im going to see positive pressure.

Ok guys I realize it is not safe to run without a wastegate because this controls how much boost is being pushed out.
I was wondering If I can run it like this for only 7.1 miles down the road. Of course I would be really easy on the throttle. It would probably be impossible to stay out of boost but I would drive really slow the entire way.
any thoughts??
You can do it, people have driven with stuck wastegates and stuff as long as you are really easy on it like you said. Make sure you shift low too.

1.18?
Its gotta be huge, which equals lag.
And are those stock cams?

Hopefully my intake manifold helps the spool a little bit. We will so how it all plays out. IDK yet.

Without the wastegate it actually isnt producing any boost lol.
When im too high in the rpms it just backfired.
benjimatt
05-31-2009, 11:25 AM
I have a quick question. SInce I have a big exhaust leak on the wastegate hole under the manifold would that throw my AFR off.
When I started the car on my regular settings I was all the way at 26:1 way to lean at idle.
I tuned it where its around 14/15. But now im backfiring. DId I add way too much fuel??
My wideband is on the downpipe.
benjimatt
05-31-2009, 10:15 PM
So i'm really thinking about getting a 4" U pipe and cutting it where it is a 90 degree bend and using that pipe for a intake pipe.
The air should be cool since it will be coming in lower.
It will kind of me like a cold air intake, since it will sit low...
any thoughts?

They aren't that big. The hy35 and He351CW both have a 9cm^2 housing, which isn't that much larger than a 7cm^2 16g housing. They spool pretty quickly on small displacement engines.

Grr everything is almost ready. But just almost. I installed the wastegate and the turbo but when installing the downpipe I noticed that it wouldn't fit. Its hitting my intercooler pipe. So I need to fix this somehow.
Then I lost my stainless steel oil return hose. SO once I find that and once I get my downpipe to clearn my oil pressure sending unit and my intercooler piping ill be on the road testing this thing out. :-)
Hey AeroOrion how do you like that VGT turb? Hiow does it spool?
benjimatt
06-05-2009, 09:31 PM
Ok guys I have some problems :-(
First of all I think I have a lot of leaks :-(
I tested the car on this road and in second gear I didnt hit full boost till like 6500 rpms.
Ok yes I know that this turbo is big and that it will spool slower than a smaller turbo. But 6800 rpms :-( no way.
So eventually it stopped making boost at all so I pulled over and noticed that one of my couplers fell off :-( It was on the hot side right at the turbo so I knew this was why I wasn't making anymore boost.
So I still cant tell if my boost gauge works or not. If I suck on the boost gauge it goes to 30 vacuum. When I blow on the boost gauge I may be able to make it to 5 psi. When I disconnect the line at idle it is barely sucking. I have it teed to the pcv valve and the Magnus intake, is this incorrect? I may try and put it at the throttle body.
When it is in my car on idle it shows no vacuum at all???
In boost it eventually climbs but it takes a while. It climbed all the way to 15 psi but I thought my wastegate spring was at 8 psi???
Some things are wrong and I am going to try and figure them out tomorrow.

Ok guys boost gauge works Smile At idle I get 17.5 psi vacuum and when driving and not accelerating my vacuum is 20 psi.
My boost is going up to 15 psi and sometimes 17 psi. So im just going to lay off the throttle completely until I install this fuel pump.
Now I have to install this boost controller.
Right not im running a line straight to the wastegate from the compressor housing. This will be changed soon.

SO the pipes are beaded and they finally stopped blowing off.
Things seem to be running fine. But im pretty sure there is something wrong with my wastegate :(
The wastegate spring is supposed to be 8 psi but whatever I do it always goes to like 20 psi!!!!
So hopefully in the next couple of days I can take the wastegate apart and see whats up. Hopefully there isnt much wrong.....
SPOOL!!! Im confused. SO no I have still not been able to get the boost leak test done yet. That will get done soon I promise.

I like the third gear stats. Im confused because I thought the statistics are supposed to be consistent in each gear??

I think with an exhaust housing of .65 a/r I should spool a little quicker.
Anyways I just took apart the Tial wastegate and it looks like I have a Large Blue spring which is 1 bar which is 14.7 psi. I'm not too sure why I am overboosting but Im going to run my lines to the eBay controller differently.
I had some extra pipe around (its a little bigger diameter but it should work) I'm getting it cut the way I need it tomorrow.
My 2.5 to 3" coupler melted Sad So i'm going to get another one tomorrow but not autozones spectre Sad

06-09-2009, 09:13 PM
Changed the setup and now its not going to 20psi!!! But it holds at 17 psi with the wastegate deactivated and with it activated (on the lowest boost) I wont test the boost controller further until this fuel pump goes on my car.
Oh and I now have a filter!!!
It seems the spool it a little better since fixing the piping. It seems that this turbo is slower than my 16g but maybe i'm just tripping??? It might be that I am use to spooling instantly lol.
Well now time for fuel pump install!!!

oh shoot my bad. I forgot to answer. The clearance is great. It doesnt touch the water pipe at all. Im so glad they made this manifold. And it was only $220

Ok things seem to be working correctly. Boost holds at 17psi....
I went and got part of my intercooler pipe welded. So i'm not worrying about leaks from there.
Car is spooling faster and I like it lol. I put a picture of the block clearance that the revhard manifold gives. Revhard FTW!!!
Once I put the fuel pump in the car I will tune and take it to the dyno :) Then I can have some real statistics for you guys :)

So I am installing my fuel pump and the removal was pretty easy. But the top hard line that is welded to the hanger got a little twisted. SO I am going to make everything 3/8ths instead of the stock size.
Well im not going to do everything on the hanger 3/8ths. Im not going to go all the way to the fuel rail just yet. This will be just a small step toward the future.
So I will just be using the 3/8 high pressure hose but what fitting can I use to make this work. I want like an inch or inch and a half to be on the inside. Ill put a hose from there to the fuel pump and it will be clamped down with good clamps.
On the top I want it to be 90 degrees so I can put a hose on the end of that to the hard line.

So base tune is almost complete. I'm a little lean in 5000 to 7000 range. lean as in 11.7: which isn't too lean buy my AFR is set at 11.0:1 I'm thinking about dropping the fuel map to 10.8:1 but I live in New Mexico. I really need to get a new knock sensor. Im throwing a code and all it ever says is 9 when I am on the gas at all. In vacuum or in boost. :(
I have been looking at my injector duty cycles. and at 17psi my highest duty cycle was at 59.9 % and that only happened once.
So I used my electronic 2-step boost controller and cranked the boost to 27 psi. WOW!!!! It feels great and really addicting. So I logged it to check my duty cycles again just to be safe and the highest duty cycle at WOT is 82.7% The average was in the mid to low 70%.
These Siemens 750cc injectors are pretty efficient I could probably go up to 30 or 32 before its really time to change the injectors. I have read that when the duty cycles are 80% to 90% its time to look for bigger
Oh and by the way I still need to rewire my 255 fuel pump :-( Its just kind of a pain on us 1g FWD folk.

Well I did a compression test and it seems that two of my cylinders are lower than when I got the car. My compression is now 120-120-110-120
with the altitude conversion 5500ft = 0.853
my compression at sea level would be
140-140-129-140
So i'm kinda worried but not really stressing it right this second.
I just checked my spark plugs and I think they looks decent.... I'm not really 100 percent sure. I bought bpr7's at NAPA and I have some sea foam that i'm going to use next week when I buy some oil first.
Good news!!! People got me scared about making tons of power on 91 octane so Today I upgraded to e85 so I am now excited.
Tuning is weird. Right now I still have my Wideband set to gasoline so I can understand the readings.
My injectors are just at the max right....well average in the 80% duty cycle at WOT. By the way I am running super rich so this will change. I think i'm going to bump the FPR to 43 psi just until I purchase my bigger injectors.

Do a leakdown test buddy. If you have a compressor and a compression gauge you can kinda do a ghetto leak down test by using the air hose on the compression gauge to air up your cylinders and listen to air from the exhaust or intake or oil cap.

Now I need my bigger injectors but I cant find them for the price that I want to find them Sad
Also my whole knock sensor setup is all messed up. I installed the new sensor and removed the error and 15 seconds later with the car in the on position The error comes back up.
I figured since maybe i had messed with the wire a long time ago that it could be not getting good contact. I pulled the ecu out and soldered a wire directly to pin nice. Still gets knock sensor error.
I checked for continuity and ground goes to ground and the sensor wire goes to ground and the pin nice input. So i'm stumped.

Hey guys some updates. Right now im looking for a -8 or 1/2" tap so if anyone knows where I can find one let me know please.
So one of my fittings and my walbro inline just came in. so now I have my golan filter, one fitting, and my inline walbro 255 fuel pump :-)
Here is my list as of now of stuff I am going to need to install/just bought.
Modified left and right motor mounts
Welded front and rear motor mounts
various fittings
20ft stainless steel hose -8 an
Walbro inline 255 fuel pump
Golan fuel filter
1/2" tapped stock fuel rail
Tanabe GF210 Springs (may not install until I get adjustable struts)
100' header wrap (for intercooler pipe)
Black ceramic 1200 degree paint
Going to install my New NoN chewed up compressor (maybe)
Cut of second radiator cap off of radiator
Smaller battery
Looped coolant lines

SO I just got the fitting welded on because getting it tapped would be 20 and welded 25. So I went with the welding. I did the rear motor mount which was pretty easy IMHO. I dont know why everyone complains about it. For me the front mount is killing me . I still dont know what to do :(
So I finished my fuel system and its great. -8 an feed and -8 an return. I put pressure in the fuel system today and I was leaking like crazy :( Fixed those leaks which were all from the fittings at the fuel filter which is now under the car with my inline fuel pump which is rewired with the in-tank fuel pump :D
I need to figure out some kind of shield I can put on the filter and pump because they are lower to the ground than I expected and ill get paronoid.
Tomorrow hopefully my exhaust wrap gets in and hopefully I can put on the front motor mount.

Why not ditch the front motor mount? I had oil drain clearance problems with my 50 trim last fall so I picked up a set of Prothane mount inserts and got rid of the front roll stop/mount. It makes working around the turbo much easier.
Good to see it coming along.

Well my whole reaon for welded motor mounts is for wheel hope and it seems like it will still hop if I have only the rear mount???

Seriously? Why would you get rid of the front motor mount?
The factory designed it with 4 mounts. I can't wrap my head around how that would be considered a good idea.

Unfortunately I am holding off on the 1600 injectors until I can get an FJO injector driver.
Yay no more idle surging lol.. I love having the isc and faiv blocked. It is pretty nice and I havent had any issues.
Also having a n/a throttle body is nice too. Now I can change my battery by just taking off a couple clamps. No more removing the elbow.
Fuel system is working out great. I have the 750cc injectors in running a base pressure of 50 psi. I'm trying to get 20 psi at 85%-90%, we will see what happens. I also finally rewired the fuel pump :-)
The solid motor mounts are great but I think im going to get my left and right mounts welded also. I also dont feel any vibration like everyone says...
