Why do Evo's sound better?

After seeing yet another bad ass car since I sold my DSM, the Evo that took off from campus had one of the best sounding exhaust notes I have ever heard (For a 4cyl). It had a BR bullet exhaust, and sounded just super bad ass. How come quite a few Evo's have that deep tractor sound to it and I can't recall a DSM sounding that good?

Is there a reason? Or is it just the twin scroll setup and the fact that the design, although still a 4g63, is different?

Those videos are a little misleading. I have a BR turbo back catless with a bullet mufler and it does not sound quite that open. If you want a DSM to sound good, just dump it at the rear axle with a turn down. The video doesn't do the tone justice but it is very deep when idling.

Bsmart, how does the car sound at wide open throttle/part throttle cruising? That is the only thing. I ran an open downpipe for a little while and it did sound very low, but didn't sound good while actually driving. MAybe it is just me, but everytime I see an Evo, they sound amazing. Only a handful of DSM's sound decent.

Wot is just loud. I also have a tial 44 dumped off of an ERL manifold so that is what I usually hear at wot once spooled. Cruising is loud but is a deep sound. It is dumped right past the rear end and I am using a Dynomax bullet muffler.

The muffler is long but only 4" diameter so it tucks under ok. I have maybe 6" of pipe past the muffler and then a 45* turn down that is angled to the left slightly.

Maybe you're used to hearing cammed dsms vs. stock cam evos. Honestly, I'm not a fan of lope, so I doubt I'll ever have a set on a street car. Won't ever need to go that fast on the street anyway.

Also it could be the fact that generally, if the vid is of a DSM, they either don't have the money for a cam with a quality mic, or they spent the money they would have used, on something DSM related :P

That car sounds like every other DSM out there. It must be the fact that you don't like lope. I think the lope is what makes the idle. But yeah, I have thought about the fact that the camera is most likely better. I just like how you put it into perspective that DSMer's are broke! :D

I have to agree with the OP. Recordings aside, in person I can tell an EVO from a DSM regardless of exhaust and/or cams. Its a subtle difference similar to a GenI small block Chevy and a LT1/4. The Gen3 and 4 SBCs are easy to to pick out by sound because the firing order id different from previous generations. Odd enough the OHV small block Ford V8s and OHC mod motors sound the same despite head design differences. Although the firing order is the same.

My only wild guess for the Mitsu sound difference is the fact the EVO's 4Gs are opposite of the DSM's. From a standpoint of exhaust pulses based of firing order the #1 cylinder on the EVO is on the pass side and the DSM on the driver's. Therefore the order in which the exhaust pulses enter the manifold is different almost as if the firing order was different.

The CR will also make the sound different.. And evo's are 8.8:1 factory.

Turbo and manifold choice makes the biggest diference. A stock turbo'd car will sound different than one with a header and a fat t3 hotside.

Stock turbo Evo's all sound the same... but 35r evos sound scary. That slight honda-sound that's just awesome IMO.

My car with the FP race manifold on a 16g sounds NOTHING like any other dsm with a td05 turbo and a stock style manifold. The exhaust tone from my car is way diferent then most DSM's I've heard, it is more evo-ish or bigturbo-ish. It's diferent. I like it.

The burbly off kilter subie sound is far worse than an SRT4.


Evo's do sound different than a DSM. Big turbo evo's are really dependent on the exhaust system for a good note, or that raspy dog shit honda sounding exhaust.

I have the Buschur 2 muffler setup, with the canister in the middle of the car, and the 4" resonator style in the rear where it exits. It cleans the look up with the JDM IX rear. And keeps the tone from being raspy. It is however still extremely loud. That being said, I've driven with just the 4" rear section (no mid muffler) and it is ungodly loud. It sounds amazing. But you cannot even talk inside the car. You have to yell.

With 2 mufflers... you only have to casually shout. And you can hear the radio if you tun it most of the way up.

I have the HAFE SS cast T3 manifold and a T3 GT3076R, HAFE SS 02 housing, 3" Buschur DP / mid muffler (Buschur's bullet muffler) 3" back to a 4" resonator and tip.

And it's louder than evo's way faster than mine. lol! It has to be the HAFE stuff. Because as soon as I put that stuff on the volume went way way up. And just got louder and louder.

my talon and my evo had a pretty equal sounding exhausts, but thats because i had an apexi N1 on both cars. but my GVR-4 sounds way diff than both of them and it has a custom 3" exhaust with a magnaflow muffler.
