View Full Version : BIG BRAKE UPGRADE

I just did this brake swap on my 90 AWD. I got the calipers, assemblies and rotors from a 3000gt for 80 dollars at a junk yard. I then bought bendix pads for 34.00 from my job and resurfaced the rotors. The brakes are an easy swap. All you need is a 17 mm socket, ratchet, 8 mm wrench and a 16 mm wrench. It takes about 30 mins, if your stock rotors are not "welded on" from being there so long like mine were, if this is the case you need a lot of wd40, big hammer and aspirin for the headache. Once you get the rotors off just do everything backwards and your done. I used fresh Dot 3 fluid. They fit perfect on the stock wheel so an after-market will be no problem. Once completely set up, I took the car out for a test.....HUGE DIFFERENCE!!! They stop on the dime, compared to stock. Very efficient way to upgrade brakes and leaves money for more HP mods. Only downside to the brakes is that they are a little on the heavy side, overall they are definitely worth the money.

Sounds like a great swap!
Are the calipers aluminum?
Thanks for the review.

Thanks, the calipers are more than likely cast Iron or some very very heavy metarial. But they stop real good.

I think AWD 2gs have them on already. FWD dont though so yep you can problably do it.

YEp, Im pretty sure you can upgrade those. They came on the Diamonte, 3000gt(non-TT) stealth, and on 93 -94 AWD til present I think. But yeah you problably can upgrade them.

So i suppose the TT 3000gt aluminum calipers wont fit then unless you get bigger wheels, right. Only the smaller calipers will fit, right.
thanks

TT calipers have a whole differtent assembly, you would need the spindles to do that swao, and possibly more

93-94 awd, come with them, 95 up awd have them too but different i think. 2g fwd can upgrade to these.

my 1g brakes suck...
Actually most 92s have single piston calipers. I upgraded my 92 AWD using the kit from DSS because they offered a core rebate for the old calipers and included everything. Very happy with them.

Tonight I replaced the warped rotors and worn pads on my 93 Talon AWD with Powerslot Rotors and semi-metallic pads. :D Obviously, I have the "big brakes" already , but I actually referenced the VFAQ for the 90-91 DSM upgrade to "big brakes" to do the swap. So I was basically doing everything that an upgrade would involve - removing the caliper and rotor, and swapping in new ones. Judging from my experience tonight, it's not difficult at all. A lot simpler than you might imagine, and doesn't take long at all.
BTW, for anyone wondering, the new rotor/pad combo works really well so far! :D Also, the shaking when high-speed braking ( > 60 mph) is gone, which is the main reason I decided to replace/upgrade. I just took it out for a long test drive/break-in, and they stop really well. :D
