Brian, I noticed you have a Phantom Grip listed as one of
your mods. Get on the Parts Review Forum and post your
thoughts and experience with this. Inquiring FWD minds want
to know.
Per 99gst's request about my experience with the phantom grip.
Well I've had it on for the past two weeks now and I can't say enough about it. Probably the most fun part of it is the brake in period. Where you have to do 17 launch's in a row. :-)
And the nice thick two tire patch that you lay down is one of the first things you notice. the other is that smoke just isn't coming over the passanger side any more. :-)
Since then it's snow'd A LOT here in MN. It's still my daily driver and I personally think it out drive's the AWD Jeep that I used to use. I have yet ( knock on wood ) to slide through an intersection. And sit and spin (somewhat)
as bad as the other two FWD cars that I've owned. and I've almost thripled the hourse power as those. My roommate ( has an AWD JEEP ) and he can't believe how bad I beat him every where in this 6" snow packed state.
The other good thing about it in snow is that when you spin at an intersection you used to slide toward the car next to you. Doesn't happen any more.
The only possible bad thing I've noticed is - high way driving and you launch into a race the phantom grip doesn't grip right away so you get minor torque steer. But that could also be a good thing because you don't lose as much power trying to spin both tires.

My 2cents - Definetly worth it

17 launches in a row, nice! Ok, during that break in how was wheel hop? Less, the same, worse? I know I was able to get wheelhop while my car was still bone stock. How about wheelspin at launch. Harder to spin out in 1st or still pretty easy to spin out.

With that s-20g turbo you should be getting some pretty good hp and torque so it would be interesting to get an idea of how the phantom grip is able to hold all that power. Maybe when the snow is off the ground and you go to the track or put the smackdown on somebody on the street you can update this review. I've been debating whether to get a true LSD like the Quaife or a Phantom Grip. I know a true LSD would be better but if the Phantom Grip works ok it would be a good alternative to a Quaife considering the cost about 1/3 or 1/4 of the Quaife.
Thanks

The limited Slip is the best way to go. but you can't beat the price of a phantom grip. I have yet to get wheel hop with it. although with the Super 20 It just spins the hell out of the tires. I live in an apartment and have an under ground garage that runs the entire length of the building. this is where I started to do my launch's ( until the smoke got to much to handle + didn't want to get caught ) Any way I was able to get up to 60 mph in my garage from a stand still. And brake before I got halfway to the end. ( I had 6 people making sure it was clear ) and I laid 2 sets of tracks straight through third before I hit the brakes. (owner of speedwerks is guessing that I'm pushing between 300-350HP)
I have yet to race in a car with a limited slip but the difference between stock and phantom grip isn't comparable for Launch's. Know I let a guy who has a sponsored Civic Hatchback with an LS motor and a turbo with a Limited slip and he didn't notice a difference.

Did you install it yourself, or have a shop do it? I know the whole tranny has to be ripped apart, which is the part that scares me. I figure with friends helping it might not be bad..

I had a shop do the install. And yep they have to take
the tranny apart to install it. The shop I had do it has done a few and they say it's not that hard.
Sorry I can't give you any specific's on install. Good
luck with it if you deside to go that route.
I know the tech so next time I see him I'll see if he'll
give me a detailed descrition of the install.

my friend was rebulding the trans in a 90 Eclipse gs turbo and he was gonna spend 1200 on l/s. I told him to get the Phantom grip! He paid like 170$ and thats the best 200$ spend on the car sice. The car goes trough so much SH1T and it holds up VERY WELL!!!! we can accualy keep up with 4wd cars on straighter stages cause of the traction!! The guys from the company are great!!!!! :-) they made a mistake and send us the wrong unit, they realized ehat they did and send the good one the next day OVER NIGHT!!! so we just gave them the bad one back at the next rally!!

Brian I used to live in that Apartment building complex you are now living at. Becareful man, they do not tolerate crap there. I am glad you are enjoying the phantom grip, but remember all that sand & dust you are kicking up in the underground garage that is messing up other people's car. I use to get pissed at other people who sped through the garage kicking up crap on my 93 RX7-R1. I think another one of the FWD MN-DSM member might also purchase the Phantom Grip.

Most people so far are cool- My roommate and friends have
smoke sessions in the garage and I know most of my neighbors
who are now around my age. But there is this one guy
who is like 35 and still lives with his mother that is
a total jerk. Like I heard him say to this guy that was
washing his car and had his music on just barely enough
for us to hear it and the guy was like don't you think
that the people up stairs might not like that music.
I was thinking it's 3 in the afternoon and I can barely
hear it standing 15 feet away.
Then I go up stairs a day later and hear him playing his
acoustic guitar and singing cumbya or something. And I almost knocked on his door and said your playing to loud
I heard him all the way down the hall.
Another thing that pissed me off is the washing hose is right infront of my spot in the garage and I can't get out
if someones washing there car and the same guy wouldn't move his car. And the fallowing result was a nice scratch on the side of my car because I didn't clear the pole. I just looking for a way to get even. But can't seem to bring myself down to his level.

I have been hearing about Phantom Grip for about a year now. I wish I had know they started making them for the DSM's. The person I heard about them from has a ZC swap in the CRX. It changed his final drive, he doesn't have a fifth gear (overdrive) or hwy gear. It pulls in 5th, i thought it was great but it took away from his top end. Did you have any trouble in that department? Thanks.

I don't know about the "Phantom Grip" per se, but I know that a friend of mine with a Quaiffe LSD, was running the exact same mods as I was except I didn't have a LSD and he was turning 2-3 tenths faster than me.... so I think its safe to say you should gain a few tenths.

The gripping power is twice as before since now two wheels spin instead of 1. And I don't know about the top end disadvantage My car still does 130+ easily ( Uh... but I don't know who drove it that fast ;-)

what about turning? does it really cut into the turning radius of the car? from what i understood it actually locked the gears together, so I wasnt sure about this.

I have my tranny off right now.. and along with the ACT2600 and Fidanza Flywheel I just ordered... I am thinking about an LSD, how does this effect the turns?? are there any disadvantages at all to running this?? thanks.

How about an update on your appreciation of the Phantom Grip LSD? Usually aftermarket parts seem to be all good off the bat, but it's after a certain amount of use that you really get the feel on what they're all about.

Still satisfied with the LSD?

well from what i've heard it only will hold about 350 hp. i'm thinking about picking one up at the same time as a act 2100 and a NOS kit for my fwd.
