I know this Thread has been done over a thousand times, and I used the search feature. However, from the 50+ Topics I checked out, almost all of the images people posted are now dead from the image hosting places going dead. So like the Interior Thread.. I was wondering if people could post pictures of their Exhausts/Tips etc... Im in the market to get a new 2.5" Downpipe and new muffler/exhaust for my 91 TSI. I can't find any good pictures of nipped out exhausts that I like. And then the pictures of the ones on pics.dsm.org I can't ask the owners about. So post em please :P

true 2.5" catback w/ magnaflow muffler. muff has dual 3" exits. Sound is deep and not TOO loud. at wot sound almost dissapears and you can hear the "whoosh" of the turbo. like it, but one of the tips is turning gold. starting to blue  Oh well, whole thing cost me $350.

My new exhaust...
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid56/p2246e50c476ba9ed9c54f71317794590/fc723dd9.jpg
It's an AHP 3" turboback, with a Magnaflow "Race series" straight through muffler. I hate how it sounds under part throttle acceleration (4 bangers sound like crap).
Now I look like every other DSM with fart cannon exhaust (IMO) :( I like twin tips, i'll have them again later too (aftermarket).
EDIT: I took down 2 more pics, i'll put them back up in a little while.

I have the Thermal R&D catback. This is the older model, as the new model is fully polished. The older model has only a polished tip, but the muffler itself is completely black. I really like it this way, and its extremely sleek this way. It definately is a true sleeper look.

The new exhaust. Much diffrent from the on above  (oops, it's on page 1), and quiter. I was going to do a side exit, that is what the hole on the side is, but I changed my mind. It's a Dynomax Bullit muffler in the middle and a Ultra-Flo at the end, oh and its 3.5in. I painted it balck so it wouldn't be too obvious, and that ugly ass mild steel color just isn't cool (hint hint Dr.Spock)

damn, i had that same exhaust (buschur 2.5" down/cat/exhaust) back in california in 1999. i think it might of had a different tip back then though. i ordered everything from him, had it on the car for like three days, i was doing engine work so i never got a chance to start the car and use the exhuast. came outside on the afternoon of the fourth day to work on my car and i saw that my exhaust was gone. from the O2 to Tip. someone got under my car and unbolted the entire thing at night and left me with a o2 housing and some washers.:realmad:

RS*R 3" Cat-back exhaust....with i believe a 5 inch tip. The exhaust is awesome. Doesn't sound a decibal over stock sound. Sometimes i have to check to see if the car is still running. Not exagerrating. The tip might look ricey but i love the exhaust. Just need a dp now.

I personally love Dr. Spock's exhuast, it may not be pretty, but who cares. It was cheap and I bet outflows all of the others on here by a lot. Nice work man, wish I knew how to weld, oh well, only one way to learn right.
This is in no way menat to say that I don't like the other exhausts, I just like to see what people make on their own.

thanks, yea cost me only 324.00 to make the turboback exhaust. 3in dp 3.5in catback. all bends were 15 degrees or less to keep restriction to a minimum. the muffler is a dynomax SS ultra-flow which is proven to flow more than a straight pipe. its pretty loud but i like the way its sounds, nice and deep, especially with the cams. a welder welded the pipes for me. all i basically did is do the measuring and cutting, marking the pipes up to be welded. pretty easy and simple. hey no one really cares how good my exhaust looks when im doin 141 down the road
not like ive done that before ;)

that's almost exactly like mine. 3" dp to a short straight section of 3" straight pipe, to a 3" morrosso spiralcore muffler with a turndown on it just under the back seats/in front of the gas tank. no bends, no crap. sounds good, flows excellent, i just get sick of everyone looking at the empty hole in the back of my rear fascia asking where my exhaust is! lol. i wish i was good with fiberglass, i'd fill in the whole, either that or hang like a 1" exhaust tip there, and make it look like i got some puny exhaust.

I built this over the winter. Still needs a flex section (have it) and a v-band assembly to seperate it roughly where the downpipe would end. I lucked out and found the 3" piping at a local salvage yard for cheap. Originally I was just going to make a full 3" downpipe to 3.5" Buschur cat-back, but they no longer sell it.

Not really sure, I haven't measured it. It's slightly less than the last home made one I did a few years back. That second picture can be decieving because the front of the car was up in the air still, but you can't see that.

Just to correct you on that its actually 2 3/8" piping, I used to have that on my car when I bought it, which also came with the original HKS catalog. When I bought the car I thought it was a stock exhaust. But it's great to see somebody still with the old school HKS stuff.
Just noticed your car is FWD, but is that still the HKS Turbo Exhaust?

Yes, I know it's 2 3/8" piping. I just hate typing fractions with out the proper script keys. Close enough. Yes, it is a FWD car and that exhaust has been on that car for years - maybe since 2000, I don't recall. The previous owner did buy it brand new from HKS. It's just a catback. The car also had a 2.5" DP (I'm assuming HKS as well) but the flex pipe rotted out so I slapped the stocker DP back on there. I'm running a 2.5" test pipe as well. It's amazing how many people argue with me (even DSMers) when I tell them it's NOT the stock exhaust. :D

Ahh, I was beat to it. The RS*R was the best exhaust you could buy though, for street performance. It did run at stock sound levels, until you opened it up (or let off the gas and with the RPMs, there is an area where it's a tad droney for a few secs).

Awesome 3" manifold-back with the ricey-est tip on the market - but you get used to it. :D

3" 02 -> 3" DP -> 3.5" "muffler" and turndown tip.
Exits just behind front seats.
I love that idea but I wana go stealth sometimes so I plan on installing 3in down pipe (no cat) then have a 3in electric cut-out then reduce it to the stock exhaust. That way you can a seeming less stock car (sound and looks) then open her wide up. Another advantage for this is that it’s a lot cheaper than a complete turbo back setup.

Yes, I know it's 2 3/8" piping. I just hate typing fractions with out the proper script keys. Close enough. Okay I understand why you didn't put that down. I originally had that on my car as well, and I have the recipt from 1992 for the exhaust, when it was over $700 . This was also brand new from HKS. My brother actually told me to look a little closer to see if it was the HKS when I bought the car because I just assumed it was stock, except for the fact he had bought the HKS IC piping, throttle body elbow and intake. But I'm glad to see somebody still has one on their car!

For people with the apexi N1 catback, I know that when new it comes with a super clean polished Tip but whenever I see pictures of people who have had theirs for a while it always seems to look less shiny and more dirty and rusty...I know it is a stupid question because all exhausts end up like this but I was wondering if this is a constant problem with this exhaust or if I am exagerrating and it never happens...If it does, what kinds of things can you do to prevent it
- Hopefully I didn't just hi-jack this pic thread but I was inspired to ask after being reminded by the hot looks of the previous posters N1

Mine looks pretty shiny and clean even though it's over 2 years old and seen alot of miles (over 40K.) The outer side is a little scored from debris being thrown at it by the rear tire.

I did this same thing. N1 Downpipe with a 3" Dynomax Race Magnum Bullet muffler with a turndown on it dumping right before the rear diff. It is extremely loud in the car and sounds terrible, unless you're WOT. I have a RNR catback on order. Why? Because this thing makes so much dust it gets my car filthy. I also left the stock muffler on so it looks like I don't have exhaust. But I'll probably never get around to putting the RNR on.
Any more shots of the Apexi N-1? Any sound clips either? I wanna hear this bad boy!

is it possible to run the exhaust under rear instead of over on a fwd like i've seen on awd? sorry 91 talon tsi
I have recent experience with this issue. About a month ago I put a 2.5" mandrel homade exhaust on my 90' FWD Talon. I decided to go under the rear "axel". The first attempt I had the car up with jackstands on the body, and let the suspension free hang. I then built the exhaust underneath, this did not work. I ended up with about a half inch of clearance :P , so back up it went. This time I used my jackstands and weight of the car to put full load on the suspension, then cut apart the new exhaust and tried again. This time I held it about a half inch under the
"axel" and I clears fine, I have yet to try to pick the car up with a lift :o I'm not sure how that's going to work, I'm pretty sure I can just pop off my rubber mounts and let it hang a bit. What can I say, it flows 1000 times better than stock and with my ebay muffler about $50 (already had bends).
caddylac

i see...so loading the suspension and gettin pretty damn close with it seemed to give you enough ground clearance?

Grrr, one more thing to envy you AWD DSMs for. Im still deciding on if i want to take it under my FWD rear or if I should just go over it. wanted to do 2.5in pipe at least. Any FWD routing pics to give me ideas?

my tsudo goes over the rear suspension, and it's a 3". i'd go over, to avoid bottoming it out.

Hey guys, got a question:
My car came with the 3" Buschur Racing Turbo-back....I think there might be an exhaust leak...I like how it's 1 completely straight piece of pipe for the downpipe/straight pipe area, but does your exhaust have clamps holding the pieces on? Mine looks like it's just slip fit and there might be exhaust leaking from that area...
Sounds very different...my car with the full 3" BR has a 'cammed' sound to it...The idle is very lopey at 750rpm range....The sound of 272'swithout the benefit of them
BTW, my Buschur has a magnaflow muffler on the end

04-23-2006, 10:31 AM
My car has a Pacesetter 3 inch downpipe (I want a new one) into a High Flow into the Exhaust...There is a clamp on the cat off the downpipe and a band clamp off the cat onto the Exhaust...But it's horrible and is definatly leaking. I'm gonna have it welded up very soon...My cat has came off 3 times already while driving down the road.
EDIT. I took a picture for you.

i just got my exhaust done. i did 3 inch turbo back. no cat, just a 3" magnaflow race series muffler with 4" tip. its not too loud, and has a great tone. at cruising speed the exhaust is not quiet, but not at all loud. it is just about right. under hard acceleration it does get a bit loud from 3k rpm to 5k rpm, but still very tollerable
hopefully the attachments will work.. sorry for the poor quality, i took them with my phone

I ended redoing the routing of the piping to gain more ground clearance (was able to get about 3/4" more at minimum) and wanted to make sure it'd fit on a 90-91 bumper car, so I finished her up last night using a different car. The last pic is next to a 3.5" stainless exhaust which is freakin heavy.

i have a question. I got a price quote from a local shop to do my 3 in turboback and it is $150. He said he probably wouldn't be able to do it because he'll have to go up and over the rear axles and he doesn't know if a 3 in will fit but i see that you guys have just been going under the axles and rear diff so i was wondering how good of a ground clearance do you guys have when its like this. I told him i wanted to do it this way and he said he would but it would probably get all beat up from the road and everything.just wanted to know wat you guys think.

Find another exhaust shop, from the factory the exhaust goes under the rear differential on awd's. Only time it goes over the axle is on a fwd with a trailing axle. ;)

Everything is V-Band clamped except for the muffler to the piping and the 02 flange to the turbo.
Burns muffler in the first pictures. Replaced it with a Magnaflow muffler in the latter pictures. The whole exhaust has two bends that are no more than 15 degrees each.

2.5 long DP (idk brand) with 2.5" piping and a magnaflow performance muffler.. I wish it didnt stick out so much, might cut it. but I really love how it sounds.. its almost completely quiet driving, under WOT it sounds like a jet :D

Nice workmanship, I'm done with flanges and gasket's, nut's and bolts in imossible places. V-bands are the way to go and plane to use them over flanges anyplace I can.
Also, the wheels are pretty nice but the offset seem's like a bit much. It kinda look's like an r/c stadium truck :P no offence of course. I love all galant's, and once again good job on the exhaust!

Heres the only one of mine I got...
3 in back, no cat, no muffler. I think it used to have one...but was cut off right behind the wheel. You can see the end from the side.
Its pretty loud from the 4 miles I drove it.

Here is my new complete 3" stainless T304 v-band exhaust. All parts are vibrant performance pieces which are very nice and affordable. Also the v-bands inter-lock with another to make sure there are no leaks. Pics do no justice for the welds and the added tab on the downpipe flange is there for extra strength, since I wrapped it cosmetics were no problem.
Hope you enjoy,
Jason
