With these hoods you must use hood pins though. For some this isnt a concern but when I wanted to do it, I didnt want hood pins and it is too much of a risk to just use the latch on the street.

why is it such a risk to have a carbon fiber hood'
on the street with the latch style, is it going
to come off at high speeds or something, i mean what
is the deal, cause im curious, isn't it pretty snug
with the latch??

There was a guy I meet this year on the superstreet tour that had just put a carbon hood on his car and it did blow off.Most all of th ones Ive seen are made very thin.If you dont put some kind off big flang or reinforcement where your hood pins are,they do have a bad habit of blowing off.But they will shave several pounds off your car and look cool too...except when some dumb ass ask you when you are going to get your hood painted...

damn B that sucks, i was wanting to get one real bad
but now you got me worried. Either way if anyone else
has experinces with this let me know what to do
to prevetn this. I don't want hood pins so i still;
want to use the stock latch.

Brian M by the way, thanks for email, REDRYDA, if you remember, i finally put on the Apex Ex, and it is definetly
bad asssss!!!!!

i've got the carisma carbon fiber hood, the risk (belive me on this one) is since the hood is only about 3-4 lbs, there's a GREAT chance that it can be torn up by the wind. mine got cracked only doing about 40 w/a pretty strong head wind. on the other hand i did about 110 for 50+ miles and the only time that it moved was when i was drafting a car in front of me. if you do get one, make sure that you get hood pins!!!
i got mine for 450 from the former discountautoworkz.com

You really don't NEED carbon fiber unless you want to
look like the honda boys who don't paint them just
to show off that they can afford a hood and not power
mods. Magnusmotorsports.com has them in fiberglass and
they are super light! They are $550.00 CDN which is like
$380.00 USD. An amazing price for an aftermarket hood.
It also comes with heat shields to protect your paint.

DUDE what in the hell are you talking about. Anytime you can get rid of useless weight it benefits you. As for showing it off. DAMN right I'd show it off too. They look sweet as hell plain.

The way I see it is no different then the old Chrysler's with their flat black hoods. It definitely not a honda only mod, many cars in Japan and Europe have them. In facted I've seen a Diablo with one.

It kills me that every time someone wants too do a mod that just because some honda's may have them also people think its "RICEY" or stupid.
I suppose that the people that make the McClaren F1 are really trying to be like the honda boys considering that car is completly made of hand laid carbon fiber. LOL

Weight is EXACTLY what I am talking about!
Depending on the Hood you get the Fiberglass ones
are LESS weight than the CARBON.
1. Fiberglass hood around here = 9 lbs - 10 lbs
and yes they are very thin and need hood pins.

2. Carbon fiber as seen at Extreme Motorsports = 17 lbs

AND I just saved 7 lbs! over your Carbon fiber and saved
over $500.00 USD to spend on another MOD!
Again, you don't NEED carbon fiber unless you want to show
everyone that you are a Moron that spends more money
trying to impress people than actually making your
car faster ( Or lighter as some expressed ).

McClaren's are wonderful machines and yes they are made
of carbon. But tell me this! Why the hell did everyone
remove the drivers wiperblade and put the passengers
up halfway a few years ago? Racecars had them must be good!
or what about the Tint that goes halfway down the front
windshield? Looks good right! .. NOT!

If a Carbon hood makes you happy then go ahead and get it!
Just know everytime you look at it think.. I could have
bought a REAL Mod for that money.

You still want the hood?

Here is a list of other must haves then
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. 5" or larger Exhust TIP only on stock exhaust
2. Damaged Full Body Kit ( From bottoming out )with a massive wing
3. Wiper blade half way up windshield
4. GTI Volkswagon FUBU Antenna
5. Chrome 5 stars or any heavy rims from the early 90's
5a. Better yet Plastic Covers for your Steel Wheels
That include a fake cross drilled rotors.
6. Chinese Stickers that NO one know what they say.
6a. Better yet! Cover the car in stickers from manufactures
of performace parts that don't even make parts for
your car! ( Powered by .... IS a real intimidating one!)
7. Chop your springs with a hack-saw and reinstall them
with your factory (Shot) Shocks. Camber/Caster/TOE ... What?
8. Tint it black as you can or better yet Rainbow and
coloured tints are better! Don't forget to cover the
windshield at least half way!
9. A good one that may be a little old school but get
a gold crown and stick it on your dash!
10. Place ALL the POKEMAN MEMBERS along your dash!
as low as it goes.. bolt it to the floor and recline
it as far back as possible and drive with one arm IF you
can reach it.
14. Paint your interior without sanding or priming
and have half of it flake off ( Really Cute )
15. Have an extingisher bolted on the passengers side
A-piller that couldn't even put out a cigerette! (Chrome is better!)
16. Put in a high powered system in your car that costs
more than your entire car! Example. $2000.00 car with a
$6000.00 Stereo with six 12". Really impressive!
17. Type R stickers and Badges make ANY car look fast
even when still.
18. Blue headlight must I say more!
19. Neon lights UNDER the car and around the licence plate
or a chain link frame is completely acceptable.
20. Additude is another essential ingredent , act like a
gangster and wear as baggy clothes as you can. Show
up at the track and run 16-18 ET's with your bad A**
car with a carbon fiber hood!
Ok first off i've seen carbon fiber hoods weighting 5 pounds, so yes they can be just as light as fiberglass hoods. Secondly I don't drive a HONDA and I'm not trying to make my ECLIPSE look like one. I want to be different from the norm crowd of DSM's. I suppose the next thing your gonna try and rip me for is I have an auto. Man it's just something different, that's all. And yes the one wiper, tint that goes halfway down the windshield, and CARBON FIBER hoods all came from the race curcuit not the HONDA scene. I personally don't like the one wiper and tint thing, so no complaints there. And by the way i also have a 5" tip(TR&D catback), 17" Chrome wheels, and 2 10" subs. So I guess I'm a gangster according to your list. The fact is that's really the norm(maybe not chrome but atleast 17" wheels) with most of the people on this board, probably including you. But I guess that means we're all just gangsters then:).
What the fuck is up with these bullshit posts,
If you want a hood, carbon fiber, fiberglass, plastic
paper go for it. Its your Fucken car. Who gives
a shit, if you have done the engine, suspension mods
and so forth and want a body kit, so get it. I think
if people have their opinions go ahead and post but
don't start calling people riceboys, and all this
fucken bullshit. I'm Hawaiian and i dont mind some
of the rice shit but as far as people wanting to get some
info on hoods, body kits, help them. SOme want to go fast
some want to look fast, and yes i rather go fast and look
good doing it. Either way, i was asking earlier in these
posts about HOODS. If anyone can help me out picking one
out, i did not know they come that light 5lbs. Shit
i was thinking around 15 would be good. I dont really
want to mess with anything too light. Wha tis the deal
with hood pins, or using the stock latch. I want
'this for the street so if you guys have some helpful
advice let me know further of shops, installing, and
ways to prevent them from this flying off yuour car. If
that were true how are people even buying this.
PEACE REDRYDAAAAAA
utrkos....
so why the hell are you rippin on those of us that have a different taste than you?
so hondas have the carbon fiber hood, so what? that means that we're jumping on the bandwagon? have you even seen carbon fiber in person? my hood changes a good 8 or 9 different colors when the sun hits it, better than any ppg paint out there. my hood tipped in the scales at a whopping 4 lbs, still in the box. it was $450 of insurance money, so i don't want to here it. not everyone here is all into the drag strip, if you don't agree with the posts, than why don't you just go to a different forum? besides, i've got show and go. you've got to balance yourself out man. sleepers are nice, and i respect them more than anything, but to turn your car into art, that's something else that you obviously don't understand.
the hood pins are a safety issue. i wouldn't go without mine. although i did adverage 110 for about a half hour without them, you could see it lift a little in the draft. ME personnaly, i'm going to remove the latch and just go with the hood pins. i don't know about the fiberglass hoods, i've never had one. but as far as the c/f goes, GET THE PINS. summit has them for 9 shipped, but i like the sparco pins, no seperate pieces (nothing to fall of or loose)
All I can say is that this is the Body Tech/Appearance forum so this question is exactly what the forum is for. I for one really like the look of the c/f hoods on certain color cars whether it be a Honda or a DSM. There is no reason someone should catch shit for saying they want one. As far as using that money for mods instead-hey everyone spends there money as they see fit.
man you got me worried now, fuck i wanted one for
my gst 96. Now with all this talk about blowing off
now i dont know. What can i do, what style do you
know off. How does it stay down with hood pins, i dont
know shit about this topic. I tought the ones that
fit OEM sytle with the latch is okay for street driving
now i hear the need for hood pins. Do you drill into
the hood, Let me know anything you can or others who
also help me out APPRECIATE IT
1) Too much cursing
2) C/F is much stronger than fiber or any other light weight material (that's why it is used in racing - trust me not for looks!)
3) utrkos what's up with you - seems like you were killed by riced out civic and you are pissed, NO?
4) BTW most hondas don't have C/F hoods - mostly fake and half/half fiber glass. The only model I know with a real C/F are Spoon Racing Hondas (yellow paing, not painted C/F hood) - which are not available in the US - but I did see some fakes :)
the hoods are great, and they will stand up to normal street driving/racing. my hood is a little warped and so the corner catches the draft of other cars, if i had my hood pins in, then i wouldn't even have to worry about it.
(getting a replacement soon i hope-shawn!!) i love mine and i wouldn't go back for anything. they are safe!
hood pins work like this:the hood pin attaches to the chassis and goes through the hood. the scratch plate is just that. the torsion pin goes through a hole in the hood pin to keep it secured.
sorry i don't have a more "high tech" picture for you. =)
I know this post is a little late but..... I have seen two types of OEM latches. One has a full metal latch. The other is just a "D" type ring molded into the fiberglass with epoxy, thus over time of closing the hood will make this area weak and the ring MAY come out and require hood pins. The way I see it, if you get a good hood with the full metal support then there should be no reason to get pins. Although some still do put them on the outsides of the hood to keep the vibration to a minimun and prevent stress cracking in the gel coat.
