OK, this is my attempt to make some things clear for all of us 1.8L guys wanting to get more power out of our little engines.
This is a culmination of every aftermarket component spoken about in "all thing 1.8 in here". I figured, why put this in the
middle of a thread that, at this point is 17 pages long. It would be easier to find being in it's own thread. But please,
keep the "all thing 1.8 in here" thread going. It is where you will find most of your answers to technical questions. I just
spent three hours, going through "all thing 1.8 in here" just to come up with this helpfull post.

Some mod notes:
Short shifters from 2.0's will fit in 1.8's.
Suposedly there is a little dark secret in the dsm world. It is said the 1.8 is a 6 bolt type and that you could
pop a 2.0 flywheel (6 bolt) and it would work just fine.

From my research, there are plenty more things we can do. Most of which I found at http://www.nopi.com. But the rest of the
above sites mentioned have more for us as well. Hope you get a lot of info out of it. I think I'm going to go lie down now as my head has swollen from all of the knowlege gained from reading that post.

Nice list Saturdaynight...
There is a little something here. The 1.8ltr. engine uses a 5-bolt pattern flywheel. So a 6-bolt or a 7-bolt flywheel from a 2.0 engine will not go in there or work. :(

Thanks for the heads up. This is stuff that I read, verbatim, from that post. I wasn't sure if that was correct or not about the flywheel but I figured I would post it and if it turned out to be wrong, then so be it.

Per indy1979, from post, "all thing 1.8 in here"
the 1.8 gear box will bolt up to the 2.0 block. The only problem is that since the 1.8 flywheel is smaller than the 2.0, the starter is set lower on the tranny. What I'm saying is that there will be engagement problems with the starter if its mounted to the 1.8 tranny on the 2.0.

"This pulley works on any Eclipse, Talon, or Laser 1.8L made from 1990-1993. The lightened underdrive crank pulley is for street & track use. This unit drives all accessories. PLEASE CHOOSE THE DESIRED COLOR OF YOUR CRANK PULLEY UNDER **MORE INFO"
I have a 94, i'm assuming since the motor is the same, the pulley will still fit my car?

In my common sense reading this list, I have read some of these posts that include bull, so dont' mind me if I let us in on some real things.
Okay, first off 1 is that a 2.0 Flywheel will bolt onto the 1.8L
The truth is guys, the patern from both is totally different, I mean the spacing is much tighter on the 6/7 bolt then the 5 bolt. Your crank would never bolt onto the flywheel, so try that again.
Porting and polishing without a turbocharger on it will not be a very big gain unless you do all the VE modifications, such as porting and polishing your intake and exhaust manifold, and putting a intake on that motor with an open filter. Still I do believe the gain would be very minimal.
Your best bet for an ignition system is to take it direct ignition like the 2.0, I heard from Kalani it is possible to take a MSD system and do that. Very good thing for a modification.
Nitrous, yeah, lets do it, but not with a dry kit. Oh and make sure you have an air fuel mixture gauge atleast, I don't want to read on here how you detonated and cracked your cylinder head.
That is all I can think of that will make a difference, the Injen Intake and an Exhaust wont' make much progress.

There is a 5 bolt flywheel for a 1.8L eclipse at http://www.optauto.com for $369

Indigo HP has an aluminum flywheel for the 1.8, and they'll bundle it with an ACT disc and plate (you should be changing your clutch anyway if you're taking the flywheel out) The flywheel weighs about 10.5 lbs. Great people. I paid about $700 for a set.
The Indigo HP flywheel winds up pretty quick, and there's so little resistance from rotating inertia that I can't even get fully spooled in 1st gear before I hit redline. :D Downside is, you have to slip the clutch more on launches and you tend to stall out a lot when you're launching against a steep grade. Well worth the increase in available power, though. It doesn't change your final peak power, it just makes your motor wind up a hell of a lot faster. It forces you to shift quicker, but the speeds are better synchronized so you don't heat up your clutch as much during spirited driving. Aside from the occasional stalling, and the slightly higher idle speed required to keep it running, I'm loving every bit of it.

Hey fast1.8sohcDSM, I realise there are some mistakes. when I first got on this board, I had very little experience with DSM's. The mod lists were derived from reading "All thing 1.8 in here" So I have some of that to blame for my mistakes. I've since found that some of these things just don't work and as you can see, early on in this thread, blackboost corrected me about the flywheel issue. But anyway, nice info you posted. :)

4. 2.0 1g cam gears will fit the 1.8 just remove the shroud (you might have to remove the engine mount to put it get in... and dont forget to put it back on)
will this mod still work then?

Yes, but it's a waste of money. Adjustable cam gears are to allow you to change the overlap and fine-tune DOHC motors. Changing the timing on a SOHC motor anywhere out of spec is only costing you power. Guess I need to make a FAQ on useless parts for the 1.8 to point people to.

I don't think we need an FAQ. I think people are actually starting to get the point.
