ok recently my car has been wanting to die ( and sometimes does) when ever i come to a dead stop. The idle just bounces around alot and it sounds like it is missing thru exhaust but there is no backfire nor misfire under acceleration. oh yeah and the problem only occurs every once in a while not at every stop. My car is an auto and a 1.8 so if anyone can help me find the problem here i would greatly appreciate it..!!!

I will move this for you to the new 1.8ltr. sub-forum...;)
As for the bouncing idle...
Try adjusting the idle speed screw a little bit...

Check your vacuum lines. Mine does the same thing, but for me it's due to the Injen intake filter being too close to the MAS. Maybe try re-setting your ECU. That might help.

i have tried doing that and it helped none what so ever. I just changed my spark plugs and oil yesterday and none of that helped either. I am going to go reset my ecu in a sec. and see if that may help me any. thanx for the help though. more suggestions needed asap.

Did resetting the ECU work?

TaLoNBLiNGBLiNG, what does the filter being too close to the MAS got to do with it? i've been having the same problem and have already tried everything, but now that i've heard what you said, im thinking may be there is no solution!

Try cleaning the throttle boddy and adjusting the biss screw. Mine was doing the same thing a long time ago, and it ended up that I had sucked some gunk in and it was keeping the TB open just enough to we're the RPM's would go up, then the computer would try to keep the car at 800 rpms or so, but the car was running at 1200 or so. It's weird to explain just try doing that.

ok i tried resetting the ecu and no luck there so i guess now to try and clean out the tb!! this is just so irritating though!!! about to break down and bring it to a shop.. oh yeah would a failing o2 sensor be the problem maybe cuz i have noticed a huge loss in mpg since it started doing this and since i have read that the o2 sensor usually makes u lose mpg i guesss that could maybe it >> Let me know if that could be the culprit and thanx again for the help!

With the filter that came with my Injen intake, i have the idle problem, but when I had the K&N on there, I didn't have that problem. Although i need a new K&N though :(

I have the "car dieing at idle" problem too. Its an ongoing battle that I have been screwing with since about november of last year. I have done almost everything to try to fix it and not much has worked. I have gotten a new isc motor (the servo side), changed oil/plugs/wires/air filter/fuel filter, reset ecu numerous times, and even did a complete top end rebuild where i cleaned the whole intake manifold-plume-throttle body assembly inside and out. (as well as having the head rebuilt) and of course did all new gaskets for everything in the top end. The things that worked the best were when i got the new isc and when i adjusted the throttle position sensor to the point where it threw a code. The tps, after i adjusted it, would throw a code every time i was off the gas quickly after I had pressed it to @half throttle or more. (So basically it was almost every time I let off the gas.) My next things that I am going to do are a new o2 sensor, even though its not supposed to have anything at all to do with idle I need a new one anyways. And I think I want to try to swap a tps off one of my friends cars that has a 1.8 for a day or so. To see if that solves the problem. I will find what it is guys, that or I will go crazy and build a whole new motor.. lol.

I think it's the alternator. I was adjusting my idle tonight (after resetting the ECU) with the Set-screw. I adjusted it perfectly, bounced maybe a tad, but then i turned on the headlights and it dropped about 200 rpms. I adjusted it with the headlights on and then turned them off, bounced up 200 rpms. So it's something to do with power supply I believe. Hmm...i think a bouncing idle is just part of owning a 1.8L.

I was thinking of something else....I dont think my car ever stalls with the ac on. I noticed that the other day cause its been BLAZING hot here in CT the past 4 days or so. Thats kinda weird. But then again its so rare that I use the ac just because it drains soooo much power.

Could the alternator be my problem too? Mine doesn't bounce but it refuses to idle above 600 when stopped in drive. A/C on or off- foot or hand brake-lights on or off if I take my foot off the brake and just touch the gas it goes straight to 750(not moving) then drops to 600 again. I know the ISC works. Vac is at 17hg. If I could get it to stay at 700 I would be happy. Adjusting the screw doesn't help maybe I'm doing it wrong?
92eclipse1.8-check the insulator inside the dist(looks like where the plug wires go on the outside)-mine was cracked and it caused what you describe.

^^^
clean ur TB
mine did the same thing ,i cleaned my tb, and idle is now 2000?!?!
so i guess i have to back down the idle screw, cuz it looks like its out all the way

Mine is definately the distributor-replacing it when I get the $200
for a rebuilt one. I cleaned the TB as soon as I got the car. Maybe needs it again but it doesn't help the idle for me.
Thanks Gene

I had the same problem..I took off my distibutor cap and cleaned it with a wire brush and it helped out.

Hi Guys,
I've just recently registered on DSMTalk but have been following the DSM scene since about 1994.
What you are seeing with the stalling at stop lights and idle, could be the vehicle speed sensor (reed switch) gone bad.
There are a few references to the vehicle speed sensor, but they are few and far between. The test is quick and easy and more or less the most cost effective. It can be found in the Service Manuals.
See if the following links could be of any help.
http://www.tmo.com/prod/eprom/conv.shtml Bottom of the page.
http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q/answers-genops.htm Third FAQ. And follow the included links.
Also, if you have the DSM Manual CD, search for speed sensor and reed switch.
There are differences between the 1G and 2G speed sensors, so take note of that as you do your research.
I hope this will help in getting your stalling fixed.
Thanks,
JJNovo

Hey guys, I didnt want to start a new thread for this, or suscribe to another one..lol.. but I just wanted to say tot he 1.8ers to check out the post in the lounge thats titled "free tech info" and go to the site and sign up. There has been a few things that were written about 1.8s. Including a technical service bulletin about idle problems. There is probably more but I just dont have the time to look right now. anyways here it is..

MITSUBISHI
MOTOR SALES OF AMERICA, Inc. TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
SUBJECT :
DTC 15 IDLE SPEED CONTROL MOTOR POSITION No: TSB-94-13-002
DATE: September, 1994
MODEL: See Below
CIRCULATE TO: [ ] GENERAL MANAGER [X] PARTS MANAGER [X] TECHNICIAN
[X] SERVICE ADVISOR [X] SERVICE MANAGER [ ] WARRANTY PROCESSOR [ ] SALES MANAGER
PURPOSE
This bulletin provides a repair method for Diamond Star manufactured Eclipse 1.8L and Mirage 1.5L vehicles which have DTC 15 stored in the ECM computer. DTC 15 - idle speed control motor position sensor - may be caused by a high resistance condition between the engine ground and the connector to the sensor. The vehicle may exhibit intermittent symptoms such as: poor idle, rough idle, or may cease to run.
GENERAL INFORMATION
There are 2 splice connections inside the wiring harness leading to the sensors as the harness passes along the forward bulkhead near the battery. The repair method involves soldering these 2 connections and adding an additional ground wire to a splice to ensure a proper ground circuit.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1990-94 Eclipse 1.8L
1991-92 Mirage 1.5L (Diamond Star manufactured only)
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Standard warranty procedures and coverage apply.
Pre-Inspection Procedure
1.Test the throttle position sensor and the idle speed control motor position sensor using all the tests as shown in the appropriate service manual. Both components must test OK before continuing this procedure.
2.Inspect the condition of the 5 ground connections in the engine compartment and the ECU's ground connection as shown in the service manual. Remove, clean, and secure these ground connections to ensure that they are clean and tight.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.Record the radio station presets.
2.Remove the battery, negative (-) terminal first, to gain access to the harness.
3.Remove the tape covering the corrugated harness protector. The length to be uncovered is from behind the battery to where the harness splits behind the engine.
4.Isolate the green/black stripe wire in the harness. Follow its length and find the 2 taped splice connections. Remove the tape and inspect the splices. If the splices or the wires look corroded, cut the bad section out and solder in new wire using proper soldering techniques and rosin core (electronic grade) solder. If the splices appear to be in good condition, re-solder the splices to ensure a good electrical connection. Solder in an additional ground wire to the splice connection nearest the ISC motor and connect it to the forward bulkhead ground.
5.Using electrical tape, securely insulate the newly soldered splices. Insert the harness wires into the corrugated protector and retape its entire length.
NOTE: Make certain the connections are securely insulated .
6.Install the battery and reconnect the positive (+) terminal first.
7.Reprogram the radio station presets. Start and run the engine for 5 minutes so the ECM can develop (relearn) the base idle conditions.
NOTE: After completing this ground repair procedure, technicians may find the ISC and/or TPS adjustments are necessary.
8.Test drive the vehicle to ensure a normal idle condition and that DTC 15 does not reappear.

Guys, I did a quick scan of this thread an no one has even mentioned the Coil wire. Mine was loose and doing exaclty what was described. Idle jumping all over the place and sometimes it just died. I refitted the connection and it runs like a charm.
BluePlymouth, when you removed your distributor, did you happen to remove your coil wire. ;) Just a though. Could be totaly unrelated in your case. :dunno:
Note: At a glance the coil wire looked like it was on. But once I got my hands dirty I noticed it was loose.
