hey guys i was drivin home the other day and i heard a snap klunk klunk noise under my hood i was like oh shit then i looked under my hood and i saw that one of my belts was missin, its not the big belt for the water pump and all that other stuff its the small one for the airconditioner and i dont know what else. the car runs fine and every thing works normal and i noticed a BIG power gain and i think i could keep up with some 2.0 NTs now. Im just guna leave the belt off cause my airconditioner never worked anyway. if any of you guys airconditioner dont work or you dont need it you should take that belt off

Well, looks like I'm gonna have to go modding this evening, that sounds like the best free mod I've ever heard of. Oh, and since the subject of this thread is "more power", does anyone have an underdrive pulley from UR or anyone else? I just wanna know if it really gives you a noticeable power gain before I waste 50 bucks.

<---wants to know about the underdrive pulley too :) I don't use my A/C, even in this 120 degree weather, so i'll consider that "mod", but only if they make underdrive pullies for our 1.8L's :)

I think that UR makes underdrive pullies foe the 1.8 cars too.
As for the A/C belt removal mod...
Think of it this way, when you take out that belt you remove parasitic drag from the engine which in turns let's the engine feel a little bit more free and make a little bit more power.

Okay, I've decided to take off the belt...however, exactly which belt is it? Cuz I don't wanna end up rippin out a belt that I need, so someone please try to describe to me which one it is...like, from the front of the car, it has to be on the right side, but from the driver side, which is it as far as depth goes? Is it the small one that's closest to the outside of the car??

its the one towards the back on the right side. its not the real big one the goes on your altanator and astuff its the smaller on, its only on 2 pulleys i think

Looking at the engine from the driver's side; the one closes to the firewall. The A/C compressor is located behind the distributor, looking form the top of the engine that's. BTW, I don't think it's much of a difference and the A/C is a nice feature for this hot temperatures...:(

Okay, so it's the belt that runs on 3 pulleys, right? The distributor is like directly over it, and there's 2 big pulleys and one small one, correct? I need to know by tonight, I have to race tomorrow and I don't wanna have to mess around with stuff at the last second.

Is it a power gain? My A/C was just charged today, and I can't use it anyway, cuz when I turn it on, my car stalls out:( This hot weather is a pain in the ass too, but I don't see the point in keepin the belt on if the A/C doesn't work anyway, especially if it'll help me out in the power department!;)

True!!! If the A/C isn't working then go ahead and take out the belt...;)

Hey guys, I cut the belt tonight...I didn't feel like taking my time, so I just hacked it with a utility knife. And YES, it does make a difference. Not the most noticeable in the world, but a difference...I went down a road at half throttle and hit 70 like nothin...normally on that road I can only hit around 60 before this huge ass turn, so yeah, it helped. Thanks to everyone for helpin me out with it too, it's greatly appreciated.:)

I did this mod a few days ago. :) Heard this really wierd cracking sound when I shifted and it all of a sudden it went away and I lost my oil pressure. Got under the car and saw that the sensor was just unpluged and right next to it was a really chewed up airconditioner belt. Didn't notice any power gain though. I'll have to check that out.

I know this is an old thread, but my car never came with an air condition. I guess I am lucky. Though I already knew that about the AC belt. I'm not a master mechanic but I know that A/C sucks power from the car because the engine has to turn another belt. I'm not sure of the actual gains but there is a slight increase in power.
