Alright, my girlfriends '90 Laser (1.8l) has the usual problem of OD not working. The symptoms point to the end clutch problem.

With the OD turned on, the car slips abruptly into neutral after 3rd gear. With OD turned off, the car shifts normally, but w/o OD highway driving results in horrible gas mileage and the nerve-racking noise of the constantly high RPMs.

I purchased the alto power pack and replaced the clutches fairly easily. Unfortunately, the old clutches didn't look too bad and the new ones didn't fix the problem.

What's next? What else can I check/replace to address this problem? I imagine the problem may be linked to the tranny ECU or the valve body?? Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

There is more than clutches that can go wrong. There is an overdrive rebuild kit. I belive tran tech sells it. I bought it but never used it I decided to get a new tranny because mine was going really bad.

It is a kit with all the o rings and gaskets and some new screws. You replace it all so you can get better pressure. Atleast that is what my tranny parts person told me.

It was 60 dollars.

I would still look in the end clutch section ,as a matter of fact it does sound like there is a bad seal ,and the way that you described the friction clutches (not being worn) that tells you that the leak while in 4th is Huge. I would suspect the lip seal in the middle of the o/d drum that seals the shaft.

Good luck,
