I'm just wondering if any of you have after market cams installed and if you noticed any lack of torque or encreased spool up time. I just got Crower Stage 2 cams installed and I can defenetly feel a lack of torque between 2200 and 4000rpm when driven hard. When driven normally it feels just like if the stock cams where in. But i think a lot of it is caused the turbo dosen't reach full boost untill 3500rpm. It used to fully spool by 2800rpm but now it starts to build boost at about 2200rpm like it always has and reaches 10psi by 2800rpm then it just stays there untill it suddenly reaches 20psi at 3500rpm. Now I also have to power brake the car to 3700rpm to get a decent launch and takes a lot longer to get there. I know for sure I have no intake, preasure or exhaust leaks. I've done a preasure test and I've checked for exhaust leaks and there's none. Some have mentioned that the cams might be out of timming or they might be out of spec. But from the research i've done it seems that if the head hasn't been resurfaced or out of the car it seldomly needs to be degreed. And the cams are defenetly timed correctly. Car runs good and all idles as good as my other friends with cower stage 2 cams. But they have big green turbos that don't fully spooll to 4krpm so they don't noticed the lag difference down low. But with my T28 and being an automatic it's obvious and I was wondering if anyone here has ran into the same problem.

I have HKS cams 264i/272e, but I don't have them installed yet. I've seen numerous dyno sheets w/ cams and they seem to have lower numbers across the power band until you reach higher rpms. I'd take it out on the highway and get up around 5000-6500 in 3rd and see if you can feel that much of a difference. If you don't have the head ported and what not or a 1g TB/1G IM, you might not feel that much difference. Get that stuff done and you'll feel the full effect of cams. Good Luck!!

Aftermarket cams sacrifice low end torque for better top end power, that's obvious. The different lift and duration are made to be optimal at rpms above 5000rpms so you should notice a lack of low end torque and slower spool up; that's just the trade off.

I have nothing from personal experience since I just have 1G turbo M/T cams with a 1G head and 1G intake manifold. While it is still a daily driver, I will probably stay away from aftermarket cams, especially now with the laggy Green.

I knew there might be a sacrifice in torque down low. The dyno sheets I've seen with these cams showed not too much of a loss in torque as the web cams. But I thought the spool up thing was strange since no one else has had that problem. But i'm also one of the few running a T28 with them.
These cams pull much harder then the stock ones. It's like they switch on at 4krpm and pull hard and strong all the way to 7000rpm. I guess that if the turbo spools at 4000rpm there shouldn't be that much more extra lag though since that's when they start to pull preaty hard. 97TSIAWD how's the green working out? Can you powerbrake it off the line?

Now that I have the Protorque converter, I can get 10+ psi off the line but I haven't tested it out thoroughly. Unfortunately, I don't have any good track numbers yet. The car has been together for about a week now but I did go to the track on Wed with some not so good results. First run was a 13.4 @ 107 with a 2.2 60ft and second was a 14.4 @ 108 with a 2.6 60ft, first with 18psi, second with 20psi.

Turns out I was leaking a good deal of tranny fluid which didn't put a load on the engine which in turn lead to low boost and shitty launches. I was also leaking fuel from where my FP gauge sender was so I packed it up and went home. I didn't want to play with fire, literally. :)

Now, I have both leaks fixed (I lost about a quart of AT fluid, not too much fuel), and the car is running nicely. Hopefully I'll be able to go to the track within the next two weeks when I return to college.

Sorry for the off topic post. Let the cams talk continue.

Just because I don't respond the same day doesn't mean I've disappeared. ;)

Good to hear you got your car running good again. I'm very insterested in the final results one's you do get there. Just one more question.. What is the stall speed on the protorque TC you got? And up to what rpm can you power brake with it? Thanks.

As for the cams I noticed better results ones I tuned them better. I had to lean it out to -20 for most of the low throttle settings and it has a lot more torque down low and spools a bit quicker. The launches are preaty strong now too. I'm preaty happy with them. Idle is preaty lopy sounding but from inside of the car they feel stock and they stay at a steady 720rpm.
