View Full Version : Not sure if this is a transmission problem?

Hey guys see if you can help me with this one...

A majority of the time when I give it a bit of gas, around 2500 - 3000 RPM the car begins to sputter really bad and won't gain anymore speed unless I give it more gas; once it gets above 3000 - 3500 it doesn't really sputter anymore. And sometimes it sputters really bad when idling, like it almost dies.

I've thought maybe it was a bad fuel injector or fuel pump, but I don't think that's the problem because the car also makes a semi-loud banging noise when sputtering (only if I say give it quite a bit of gas when coming from a stop on a hill or something that puts a lot of strain on it).

Any help is greatly appreciated as I don't have any money to have it inspected by a professional.

between 2000 and 2500 rpm when the spark plug gap is too large. Check.

Heh, that brings me to another thing. I opened the hood up last night and watched it for a while waiting for it to sputter. And it just so happened when it sputtered (not sure if it happened at the same time) that a couple of sparks flew from the spark plug wire where there is a teeny-tiny little hole. I hope that's just the problem.

Does it sound like it could be?

Also, it just started happening one day. I did have the engine completely rebuilt a couple of months ago, but nothing since then.

Hey espilce,

I have a question, along with your sputtering has your car ever "stalled"? I have been driving along and have my car die! I pull over to the side of the road throw it into park, remove key and wait 10-15 seconds. Re-insert key and it starts no prob. but while it is dieing I am getting "clicks" from my dash (which I understand is my e.c.u. telling me something is wrong) I have tried to manually tried to pull the codes out using an analogue voltmeter to no avail:( I need to find someone with a pocket logger ( shelling out $55.00 cdn to Satan to read the codes burns my ass) Would replacing plugs (properly gapped) and wires fix this?

(sorry about the newbie rant, I just want this problem to vanish)

Arching of the plug wire will kill the power. Replace the plug wire. Pull it somewhere dark, let it run and you will see any sparks from bad wires.

I had a boot slip exposing the lead on mine. Was reeeeally sputtering.

Also, try not to touch the wires (my thumb joint still hurts).

Hey, I failed to mention that in my previous posts, when I popped the hood one night to listen to the engine (while it was sputtering) sparks was flying out of one of the wires.

Could this be my problem?

And no my car has never died, although at times it seems like it would/should. It has dropped to low as 500 rpm which then I gave it a little gas to prevent it from stalling.

Replace the wire or your car will die eventually. Make sure they are all the way in the coil pack and the boots are covering the metal on wires (Contacts)! Sparks flying=bad.

Remember your fuel rail is right there. DSM car fires look very very nasty.

Look at this link on my site: http://www.plymouthlaser.com/fire.htm

That story (he is a local guy):This guy saw sparks, got out, popped hood, went to get fire extiguisher in the back, saw fuel rail catch, rather than get extinguisher, ran for his life the other way, boom! :( It happened really fast. Lucky he bailed or ....well just look at the interior. All within minutes.

Check That Wire!!!!

Agree...

Replace those wires as soon as possible. A set of Accel 8mm ones from Pep Boys retail for about $50. That's what I have on my car right now...

Replaced the wires yesterday, got BOSCH 7mm, should I have went with 8mm? But anyways, the sputtering is gone now and it runs like a charm!

It's okay to stay with the 7mm ones. Glad to hear that it's working right once again...

Yikes! found out what my problem was, I burned out the ECU. That explains the stalling and sputtering apparently.
