Checking Fluid level
TO check the fluid do this. Warm car to normal operating temp (drive it). Take shifter (E Brake on, so you dont move around during this and on level ground) and run thru the gears. P-R-N-3-2-1-2-3-N. Clean the dipstick off. Put it back in.......Check dipstick while car is in Neutral.
It should be at the Hot mark when car is good and hot (normal operating temp).
This pushes the fluid around thru the valve body and tranny channels to a checkable level.
Overfill and you will know once it gets Hot, it usually spews out of dipstick. This creates a mess of smoke and scares you and other motorists around you..... That happened to me 100 miles into a trip many years ago AFTER a Dealer/Shop changed my fluid and filter..
So check it yourself to be safe!

Not being an AT owner are there any pics of where the dipstick is? We could make this a nice little front page feature.... :)

I will snap a pic when I have the 5 speed out of the garage :)
And then let you know or drop a link. I am still planning to do an AT page for different things, but work is too busy.

i thought you were suppose to check the fluid level in park not neutral for this car. 2g that is.

My 2G has a shifter thingy, 5 gears and a clutch :)
Anyone want to comment on the 2Gs??
The Hayne's or one of those says Park for the 1G which is wrong. I have asked a bunch of folks including Dean Mason and it seems Neutral is the way to go..... This applies to most AT cars in general.
Feedback appreciated.

if your sposta check it when its hot then whats the cold mark for????

Cause it is a good reference for those who do not bother to read the way to check it for accuracy.
Transmission fluid........ What happens when it is hot?
It basically causes the level to rise. When it is cold what happens? You guessed it.
Example: When you first crank an AT DSM that is sitting cold and you put the drilled plug in the Manual valve per Translab after doing the kit. You hear a hissing and spitting noise in the Pan. That is fluid squirting out onto the top of the fluid. When the car heats up, the noise goes away. Cause the fluid level has risen to above the Manual Valve plug.(For all you folks wondering what that damn noise is in the tranny). Btw, this is normal per Dean Mason.
Note the cold mark is lower on the stick. Now, If I want to be 100% certain of my fluid level when would I check knowing the mentioned aboved. Why Hot?
Well, lets say Brand X Fluid rises more than brand Y. We use the cold mark. Brand X rises much more than Brand Y well above the distance on the dipstick (space between hot and cold). You use the cold mark. You are not concerned because you ran Brand Y, checked it cold using the mark and never had a problem. You switch to Brand X ands check it cold as before with Y. You go for a 200 Mile drive, you notice Brand X is all over the Transmission and burning white smoke is behind you due to it coming out out the dipstick hole or seals.....
By checking Hot you are certain of the Maximum level the fluid rises, hence avoiding overfilling and blowing seals etc.
Just a theory.

I don't know about you guys, but I have to keep the tranny level way over the full mark on the dipstick since the Translab shift kit was installed. It would actually lose suction and drop out of gear on hard launches with the level right at the full mark.

I think the owner's manual for mine says to check it in Neutral as well.

Does the car need to be running or off while the fluid is checked?

Not that many of you own one. But Honda's you are supposed to check not running. Or they will always read full when they aren't.

Way to bring back a 5+ year old thread. Last time I checked, this site had nothing to do with Honda's so who cares?

Last I checked the last post was 1.5 years ago.
And if I recall correctly there was a picture post of some1 throwing up their RHD honda. I dont think I remember seeing any1 say this is a DSM site. Who cares? Some of us like to reach out for knowledge behond the car we drive everyday. Excuse me for handing it out.
Besides...how many of you actually use your DSM as your DD? Of those that don't. I'm willing to bet one of them is a Honda owner.

I said nothing about the last post, just the age of the thread. The name of the site is DSMtalk. To me that says this is a DSM site, not Honda. Read the rules also. Any1 and some1 are not in the English langauge.

Well I contributed to the thread. Regardless of the type of vehicle. It wasnt the *bump* thats you guys speak of in the rules and it wasnt just garbage unlike these last two posts that are frowned upon.
If we are going to get in a spelling/grammar war then your first post to me you used the word Honda's with an apostrophe to show ownership when in fact the "site" does not own a "Honda".

On the forum, yes I may not win, but judging by your tone I already won. Ban me if you want. It's not like I've been here long enough to miss out on anything. Especially since you'll basically be banning me for, in the beginning, being helpful.

Yup, you won alright. Give me just a little more shit and you can have your ban wish filled. How exactly did you help anybody here by telling us about your Honda tranny? Stupid.:wall:

First off I don't drive a Honda. Im just an alignment tech and do General Service. But as I stated before. We all don't drive just DSM's. All of our significant others don't drive DSMs. See, the forum I yousta frequent we were mainly one car. Like this place. But if a subject was brought up about a differant car in the same post we would help them. And I even stated in my first post that I know not many of you own Hondas. So sorry for adding a little knowledge into a unknowing persons head.
For instance if I didnt say anything. Would you have known Hondas work that way? Maybe you do know. But if you didnt, I bet my post would be the first thing to smack you upside the head.
That is my entire point. Im not DSM or nothing. I like to help expand the mind behond the wheel you sit behind.
Im done responding to this post so feel free if you like, but all it looks like is a "way of the post whores" and Im not one to do so. Especially arguing with someone who is set in there message board ways.

I don't care what you were trying to do. You brought back a dead thread and added useless info to it. If I hear anything else from you on the argumentative side, you are done. This is your final warning.
