When i come to a stop the tranny bangs into gear while downshifting, it makes my whole car shake. Is it almost time for another rebuild? i hope not

Did your car start doing this all of a sudden? My car started doing the same thing from one day to they other. I thought that I needed a rebuild also! As a last resort I took apart the drivers side panel behind the radio. Then I made sure that all the wires on the torque converter module (TCM) were in right. The TCM is right behind the ECU. I pushed them in just in case. My car has never had the problem since. Hope this helps.I shot the CEL code on my car and it gave me codes 60 or 61 I don't remember.

Try re setting the computer by pulling the pos. battery cable for atleast 10-15min. Then go drive the car normal. Our cars computer senses how we drive our cars & adjust the quickness & smoothness of the the upshifts & downshifts. For instance on my car, if i drive it normal it will shift good & firm at low rpm's & not downshift hard. But if i dog it alot for a while it will firm the shifts at high rpm's & downshift hard sometimes. Then when i go to drive it normal for some time it will act like its slipping & sometimes downshift hard. I have done this countless times & it works for me. I have to reset my ecu all the time anyway b/c the check engine light comes on sometimes b/c of no cat. Just try it. Cant hurt anything. Hope this works for ya.

ive never heard of that.... i dont see how that would effect how u bang into gears, i think ur just shifting at diff rpms and engaging the clutch more properly..... as for the battery terminal itll delete a CEL... but never heard of the shifting problem, but dsm's 1g's mainly dont always like to shift nicely as we r all aware =)

These cars have a separate trans. computer & when you pull the battery cable for about 15-20min it'll reset the trans computer. & for shifting at diff. rpm's & engaging the clutch more properly; i dont know what you mean by that. An a/t will shift on its own which is controlled by the trans computer according to how much gas you give it. The throttle position sensor & the trans. computer talk to each other. Just try it. It works on my 97 talon a/t. I have talked to several other people about this & they tried it & said it helped.

When I bought my car in the summer of '99 there used to be a loud clunk whenever I shifted into the first gear. I managed to get around it by changing my driving style (braking hard just before it shifted). It didn't bother me at all. Recently I put in the Translab shiftkit and the problem become worse. It makes clunking noise whenever driving slow (1 - 2 gear). So finally yesterday I took it to the Chrysler dealership (I have a buddy who works there) and he had the mechanic look at it. The guy said that I needed new 'drive shaft mounts' the total estimate was about $550 (mounts, u-joints, etc.) and about 4 hours labour ($280). I'm a sudent so I'm not getting anythign done as yet.

Just get any type that works for sealing roofs on houses. They go for like 3 to 5 bucks on any harware store. Last time I did one I had to get 2 tubes...

My sister's car is an automatic 93 and it is having some shifting problems. When cold it will jerk into gear ( reverse or first) very hard and moves the car at least a foot. When driving normally the car will tend to what it seems like slip into gears. It is not consistant and it seems to be pretty random. Some times is will slip when downshifting and sometimes it decides to downshift even when accelerating. Is the transmission going? The tranny fluid is okay .. maybe it needs a change but it is not black
Suggestions needed - help

I know this is an old thread, but anyways ...
So I did the silicone thing to the drive shaft mounts. Yes I followed the instructions exactly and everything seemed to work just fine until I started drving my car again. After spending a lot of time under the car it had the same thumping noise. I just kept driving like that and now it has become worse. The car doesn't thump that much when I drive with the OD Off ... so I'm thinking the thumping happens when the car shifts from 4th to third.
Also, I took my car on the highway after a long time last Friday and the drivetrain was really really loud ... like I was sitting in an airplane. Could it be because of the driveshaft or do I have bad wheel bearings or somthing

From What I heard the knock sound you hear may be comming from the worn out splines in the t-case or the center diff. shaft.
My car does the same, but i ordered a new diff shaft and will install soon.

How much did it cost?
Do let us know how the installation went and if it fixed the problem or not. Thanks.

I should be installing it within the next couple of weeks. The cost was $78.95 from Conicelli Mitsubishi. They have the BEST prices for OEM parts!!! To get to the site go to dsm.org them click on vendors and click on Conicelli Mitsubishi... they offer a 25% discount on all parts.:D Anyway I will keep you posted.

Check the transmission mount(s) and other engine mounts first -- they go bad and when they do they are often the cause of CLUNKING problems.
CHECK THE SIMPLE THINGS FIRST WHEN TROUBLESHOOTING THEN MOVE ON TO THE MORE COMPLICATED

Well, just fixed the 2-1 downshift clunk in my car. I removed the TB to replace the shaft seals and upon re-installing it, I calibrated the TPS to read exactly 0% at 0% throttle. Prior to this, I know the TPS was reading a minimum of 2%. I obtained these values from the datalogger built into DSM Link, but I imagine there are other ways. Anyways, the point is that my car does not clunk anymore while slowing down.

I have a 1.8 auto (sad i know) and it used to clunk when downshifting, now it doesn't because something is wrong with the tcu and it's in failsafe mode, so it's always in 3rd gear when in drive:( . I know it's supposed to be next to the ecu, but what does a TCU look like (a pic would help).
