View Full Version : Timing belt off?

I recently changed my timing belt and now the car seems to run really different. When I accelerate gently (barely touch the gas) it picks up speed smooth and easy. If I give it more than 1/4 throttle it seems to be laboring it still gains but seems to work too hard til around 3500 RPM. I followed the manual to the letter and am 99% sure it's right. Just wanted to see if these symptoms pointed to it being off before I tear into it again. Also if I hold it at about 1/4 throttle it labors for a few seconds then seems to correct itself and take off. I know I need a distributor also could this cause these symptoms? I'd truly appreciate any help here.
(base timing is right on)

Make sure that the timing marks are aligned properly.
Did you changed the balance shaft belt too??

Thanks for the reply.
Yes. I changed the balance shaft belt and water pump while I had it apart. When I opened it up I noticed the oil pump mark was off by about 4 teeth so I set it by the book-turned it 6 times and everything lined up again. I was hoping someone recognized these symptoms before I opened it again. Not lazy just busy I changed it while on vacation so I wouldn't have to rush. I'll look at it today but can't tear it down til the weekend.

I dunno I would be leaning to something other then the timing belt. If you did the belt wrong, say it was off a tooth or something, you would notice it immediatly when you started the car. It would run like total shit. Well at least mine did when i had it done.. (I didnt have alot of time to do it at the time) the shop was like 1-2 teeth off and the car ran horrible. So in other words I have no idea what the cars problem is but the belts probably not it.

I don't think it's the timing now because it seems to run pretty good except under a load(hot day,A/C on,and 450 lbs in the car getting on expressway) with just me and no A/C it runs OK (a little shaky). I'm going to change the TPS and distributor and see what happens. The primary resistance is .2 out of spec and the TPS is real touchy to set and won't stay exactly where I set it. Could these cause this kind of thing? I know it was overheated before I got the car could the HG cause this? I can't find a vacuum leak but it's at 18 hg. Supposed to be 20?
Thanks for the replies any input is appreciated:)

Try using a timing light to set the distributor correctly...

I did-I'm not new to wrenching. just new to DSM's. I'm an old V8 guy catching up on newer stuff.
