i have a buddy who just had a alto endclutch and the translab shift kit installed in his 97 gsx. his car is staying in 3rd gear and won't downshift or upshift even when he comes to a compete stop. it only happens every once and awhile but more freq. now. the only way he can get it to shift is to shut the car off and restart it. he took it back to the guy who installed the upgrades and he says there is nothing wrong with it. any help would be appreciated.

Does have any check engine lights??? Like the TCU failing? Does it go into reverse and 3rd only (NO 1st, 2nd)?? That is limp mode, meaning something electrical is wrong, possibly solenoids or PCSV on the VB.

THe guy who installed them did not do something right. If he did it and it worked before....Well.

Check for broken wires going into the tranny. Check the side of the end clutch cover as well. There is a pulse generator there, the wires could have been broken or cut. The pan will most likely have to come off and check for loose grounds wires, improperly seated solenoids and etc if not on the outside.

I had some of my wires damaged and it would do the same thing but it would throw a CE light. I also had the same problem when something was asembled wrong or dirty valve body. But it would stay stuck in third all the time. I'd just pull the Valve body out rebuild it, clean it and make sure all the wire connections are in good condition.

It could be a couple of things. I've had the same symptoms when my fluid was overdue for a change. I also had the same symptoms recently when my TCM took a dump.
With the TCM failure, it not only would stick in 2nd (limp-in mode) but it would also shift rough and totally random (up, down, whatever...). Error code 66 showed on the CE light.
When the fluid was overdue, it would just start to default to 2nd, and stay there until the keywas cycled. No errors were generated.
